BrowserStack Screenshots Not Capturing Web Fonts Correctly: A Troubleshooting Guide

A BrowserStack screenshot with fallback fonts can result from failed font requests, CSS face selection, private-host access, or capture timing. Use the checks for your specific product.

If BrowserStack screenshots show fallback fonts or the wrong typeface, first identify which capture product you are using, then check whether the remote browser can fetch the intended font and whether capture waits for the page to settle. BrowserStack Screenshots API, Percy, Live, and Selenium-driven screenshots do not share one set of capture controls, and the available information does not establish a universal BrowserStack font defect.

First identify which BrowserStack screenshot flow you use

“BrowserStack Screenshots not capturing web fonts correctly” can describe several different workflows. The remedy depends on whether the image comes from the Screenshots API, Percy, a Live session, or your own browser automation.

  • Screenshots API: a headless URL-capture service with browser and operating-system selection. Its documented timing control is wait_time. Check the current Screenshots API documentation for supported options and plan availability.
  • Percy: visual testing with its own snapshot waits and asset troubleshooting guidance. Use Percy’s instructions rather than assuming Screenshots API parameters apply.
  • Live: a manually controlled remote browser session. Use its developer tools, where available, to inspect the page and font requests.
  • Selenium or other automation: your driver and capture code control when the screenshot is taken. You can wait on a page condition such as the browser’s font set becoming ready.

Record the product, browser and version, operating system, viewport, URL, and whether the problem affects every capture or only one combination. The Screenshots API allows browser and OS selection, so compare like with like.

Check whether the remote browser can fetch the font

A screenshot showing a fallback face does not by itself reveal the cause. The font request may fail, the font host may be inaccessible, or the page may request a family or weight that the stylesheet does not provide. Inspect the remote browser’s network logs, Percy build or CI logs, or developer tools if available.

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
  • Confirm that a font request is made and note its URL, status, redirects, and any network error.
  • Check whether the resource requires authorization or comes from a host that must be allowed by your testing configuration.
  • Look for timeouts and lazy-loaded assets; a font or stylesheet that loads late can be absent at snapshot time.
  • Check the browser console and compare the screenshot with a local browser rendering of the same URL and application state.

BrowserStack’s Percy guidance for failed assets specifically covers missing font and CSS assets, network errors, host allowlisting, timeouts, and lazy loading. Those Percy checks are useful for Percy workflows; they do not establish that every setting or behavior applies to the separate Screenshots API or Live.

Verify the CSS font face and requested style

Once you know whether the font file is available, verify that the page actually applies the face you expect. In the loaded CSS, check the @font-face family name, src, font-weight, and font-style. Compare those declarations with the family, weight, and style requested by the text element. Inspect a representative glyph as well: a file can load while a particular character still comes from a fallback font.

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

If the element asks for a weight that is not declared or supplied, the browser may synthesize a style or select another face. Treat that as a page configuration issue unless the request logs show evidence pointing elsewhere; a CSS mismatch alone does not establish a BrowserStack service problem.

Wait for the right capture condition

Screenshots API: use its documented fixed wait

BrowserStack documents wait_time for Screenshots API captures. The documentation lists a default of 5 seconds and selectable values of 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, or 60 seconds. This is a fixed delay after navigation, not confirmation that a particular font has loaded. Try a suitable value if logs show the font is simply arriving late, then verify the resulting request and rendering.

Percy: wait for the relevant page or element

For script-based Percy snapshots, BrowserStack recommends ensuring the page or target element has loaded before capture. Use Percy’s documented waitForSelector or waitForTimeout controls as appropriate, then check failed asset and network diagnostics if the font is still wrong. A selector wait is generally more specific than an arbitrary pause when the element’s appearance marks readiness, but it does not prove that every font request succeeded.

Custom browser automation: wait for the document font set

Where your automation can run JavaScript in the page, wait for the browser’s font set to settle before capturing:

await document.fonts.ready;
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });

The exact screenshot call depends on your automation library. The MDN FontFaceSet.ready reference describes this readiness promise. It signals that font loading and related layout work for the document’s font set have settled; it does not prove that the intended remote face loaded successfully. Check the network request and computed font selection too.

If the site or font host is private, check Local Testing

For a local, staging, or otherwise private site, confirm that BrowserStack Local is connected and can route requests to both the page and the font host. BrowserStack describes Local as an encrypted tunnel through which remote browser traffic can reach private resources; see its Local Testing documentation. A page loading successfully while a separate private font host remains unreachable is a plausible diagnosis to verify in that setup, not a confirmed cause for every font failure.

Compare failures and gather evidence before escalation

  1. Capture the same URL, viewport, application state, and wait setting in a browser/OS combination that works and one that fails.
  2. Save both screenshots and note the product, browser/version, OS, viewport, and exact capture method.
  3. Retain font and stylesheet request results, console errors, and Percy or CI logs where applicable.
  4. If the issue is intermittent, repeat the capture to distinguish a one-off asset failure from a reproducible difference.
  5. If it remains specific to one browser or viewport, send the reproduction details and logs to BrowserStack support rather than attributing it to a general font defect.

BrowserStack’s Percy troubleshooting guidance advises retrying one-off resource problems and investigating persistent browser- or width-specific failures. Keep product-specific controls separate when reporting: a Percy wait configuration is not evidence about Screenshots API behavior, for example.

Or skip the browser setup:

If you need a clean URL screenshot without configuring a remote browser capture flow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API accepts a URL in one GET request; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.
