Browse with Copilot in Edge on Windows 11: Turn It On, Limit Access, or Turn Context Clues Off

Short answer: In Microsoft Edge on Windows 11, you enable Browse with Copilot by opening Copilot, choosing Browse with Copilot, and describing the task. Microsoft’s consumer instructions do not document a single switch that permanently disables Browse with Copilot itself. If your goal is to stop Copilot from using information about the pages you visit, turn off the separate Context Clues setting at More (…) > Settings > Copilot and AI.

Browse with Copilot and Context Clues are different controls

The wording is easy to confuse because both features involve Copilot and your browsing session. They do different jobs, so changing one does not automatically change the other.

Feature What it does How you start or change it What turning it off means
Browse with Copilot Lets Copilot perform actions in Edge, including clicking, typing and navigating tabs. Microsoft describes it as an action-taking mode. Open Copilot and select Browse with Copilot, then enter a request. Microsoft’s consumer support guidance does not identify a universal setting that removes or permanently disables this mode. You can decline to start it and interrupt an active task using the control shown in the browser.
Context Clues Controls whether Copilot can use browsing information to answer questions or requests based on websites and browsing activity. More (…) > Settings > Copilot and AI > Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web. Copilot no longer has access to that browsing data for those requests. Suggestions and some responses can become less relevant.

Microsoft explains the action-taking mode in its Browse with Copilot guidance and describes the privacy setting in How Context Clues work with Copilot in Edge. Treat the two settings independently: disabling Context Clues limits information used in responses; it is not documented as a kill switch for Browse with Copilot.

Is browsing with Copilot available today?

Availability is not universal. Microsoft’s current consumer guidance says Browse with Copilot is rolling out to Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the United States, with additional markets to follow. Eligibility can change as the rollout expands, and the support page does not provide one Edge version number or a single worldwide release date.

That means an up-to-date Windows 11 installation can still lack the button. The absence of Browse with Copilot does not by itself indicate a broken browser. Account type, subscription, country and Microsoft’s staged rollout can all affect what appears in Copilot.

Microsoft also asks whether Browse with Copilot works with every site. Do not assume that it does. A site can present controls, sign-in flows or page content that Copilot cannot safely or reliably operate. For work accounts, administrators can explicitly restrict sites; those controls are described later in this guide. For a consumer account, the support material does not publish a universal list of supported domains, so the practical test is whether the option appears for your account and whether Copilot reports that it can interact with the page.

How to enable Browse with Copilot

Use these steps when the feature is available for your account and region.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge on Windows 11. Start a normal browser window and open Copilot using the Copilot control in Edge.
  2. Choose the browsing mode. In the Copilot text box, select Browse with Copilot. If the option is missing, use the availability checks in the troubleshooting section rather than assuming a setting is hidden.
  3. Accept the first-use consent prompt. Microsoft says first-time users may need to acknowledge a consent form before the mode can run. Read the prompt so you understand that Copilot may interact with pages in the current browser session.
  4. Describe one clear task. Enter the outcome you want, such as asking Copilot to locate a particular piece of information or complete a sequence of page interactions. A detailed request communicates the intended task more clearly than a vague command.
  5. Watch the browser while it works. Copilot’s activity is shown in Edge, allowing you to monitor what it is doing. Stay ready to interrupt the run if it takes an unexpected path or reaches a page you did not intend to use.
  6. Handle confirmation requests yourself. Some actions, including purchases or bookings, may require your attention or an explicit confirmation. Do not treat a task as complete until you have checked the result on the website.

Microsoft’s description is explicit about the kind of interaction involved: “Browse with Copilot lets Copilot perform actions directly in your Microsoft Edge browser, such as clicking, typing, and navigating tabs.” Read the full Microsoft Browse with Copilot support page if the consent wording or available controls in your build differ from these steps.

Write requests that are easy to supervise

Use a bounded objective and identify the page or information you expect Copilot to use. For example, specify that it should find a product specification on the page and stop before checkout, or ask it to collect visible details without submitting a form. Explicit boundaries reduce ambiguity, but they do not guarantee perfect behavior; you still need to review each action.

Avoid combining unrelated tasks in one command. A request that asks Copilot to search, sign in, change account information and place an order gives you more points at which a mistake can matter. Break complicated work into separate, observable stages and confirm the result after each stage.

How to stop or disable Browse with Copilot

There are two different situations: stopping a task that is running now and preventing use of the mode in the future.

Interrupt an active task

Microsoft says Browse with Copilot activity is visible in the browser so you can monitor or interrupt it. When the run is active, use the interruption or stop control presented in the Edge interface. Check the page afterward to see whether any click, text entry or navigation happened before the interruption. If a form was partially completed, do not submit it until you have verified every field.

The exact appearance of that control can change with the rollout. Microsoft’s support material does not give a universal keyboard shortcut or a single permanent stop button that applies to every consumer installation, so follow the control displayed with the active task.

Prevent future use of the mode

Microsoft’s retrieved consumer instructions do not document a universal Edge setting that disables or removes Browse with Copilot. You can prevent yourself from starting it by not selecting Browse with Copilot, but that is a usage choice, not a policy switch. Turning off Context Clues is also not equivalent: it limits Copilot’s use of browsing information for responses and does not claim to disable the separate action-taking mode.

If your Edge profile shows a different control, read its wording carefully. A setting that controls web context, personalization or site access should not be assumed to disable browsing actions unless Microsoft explicitly labels it that way.

How to turn Context Clues off

Use this path when you want Copilot to stop using browsing information about websites or your browsing activity in its responses.

  1. Open Edge’s More menu. Select the More (…) button in the browser toolbar.
  2. Open Settings. Choose Settings from the menu.
  3. Open Copilot and AI. In the Settings navigation, select Copilot and AI.
  4. Disable the web-context option. Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
  5. Test the behavior with a new request. Ask a question that would normally depend on the page you are viewing. Copilot should not have access to browsing data for questions or requests based on websites or browsing activity.

These labels and the route come from Microsoft’s Context Clues instructions. Microsoft’s getting-started guidance for Copilot in Edge also describes reaching Copilot and AI settings through the More menu.

What changes after Context Clues is off?

Copilot can still be available for general questions, but it no longer has the browsing information covered by that setting when responding to website- or activity-based requests. Microsoft warns that suggestions and some responses may be less relevant as a result. A page-specific answer may therefore become more general or require you to paste the relevant text yourself.

Do not describe this as a complete browser privacy lockdown. The toggle addresses Copilot’s use of web context; it does not claim to disable every Copilot feature or every form of data processing in Edge. If you need a stronger restriction for an organization, use the account and administrator controls described below.

Work and school accounts have separate controls

Microsoft describes Browse with Copilot for work as a limited opt-in preview for enterprise tenants. Whether you can use it depends on your organization’s configuration, so contact your IT administrator if the option is absent or behaves differently from the consumer instructions.

Administrators determine which sites Copilot may interact with through allow and block lists. In Edge, a work user can inspect the resulting site availability at Settings > Copilot and AI > Allow Copilot to browse with me. This is a site-access control for a managed account, not a guaranteed consumer switch for disabling Browse with Copilot everywhere.

Expect an organization’s policy to take precedence over your personal preference. If a site is blocked, changing Context Clues or restarting Edge will not override the tenant’s list. Ask the administrator which sites are approved and whether the preview is enabled for your account.

Privacy and safety before you let Copilot act

Browse with Copilot is an interactive agent, not merely a text summary. Microsoft says it can click, type and navigate pages, and that activity is displayed so you can supervise it. That visibility is useful, but it does not eliminate the possibility of an incorrect action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Review every important step. Copilot can misunderstand a request or select the wrong control. Verify destinations, quantities, names, dates and form values before anything is submitted.
  • Be cautious with financial activity. Avoid letting the mode handle payments, transfers or other financial actions unless you are present for every confirmation. Microsoft specifically recommends caution around financial activity.
  • Protect personal identifiers. Do not provide unnecessary identity numbers, account details or other personal identifiers in a task. Treat any page containing them as sensitive.
  • Keep confidential material out of the workflow. Microsoft advises caution with confidential data. A page open in your browser can contain information you did not intend to use in an automated task.
  • Remember the session context. Microsoft says Copilot can use cookies and open tabs in the current browser window. Review which tabs are open before starting a task, and close unrelated sensitive tabs.
  • Do not expect access to saved secrets. Microsoft says the feature cannot access saved passwords or wallet information. That limitation does not make other page content safe to expose, so continue to supervise the session.
  • Watch for hostile page instructions. Web pages can contain hidden or malicious instructions that affect an automated agent. Microsoft warns that Browse with Copilot may make mistakes or be influenced by such content.
  • Confirm purchases and bookings yourself. Some transactions require user attention or confirmation. Treat a confirmation screen as a review point, not as an automatic approval.

These precautions are based on Microsoft’s Browse with Copilot safety guidance. The safest operating pattern is to use the mode for bounded, low-risk tasks while you watch the browser and interrupt anything unexpected.

Choose the right setting for your goal

Your goal Use this approach What it does not do
Have Copilot click, type or navigate on a page Open Copilot and select Browse with Copilot, if your account is eligible. It does not guarantee that every website or workflow will work.
Stop Copilot using page and browsing context in answers Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web under More (…) > Settings > Copilot and AI. It does not disable the Browse with Copilot mode itself.
Stop an action that is currently running Use the interruption control shown with the active Browse with Copilot task, then inspect the page. It cannot undo a click or submission that already occurred.
Restrict sites for an organization Ask the IT administrator to manage allow and block lists; inspect Settings > Copilot and AI > Allow Copilot to browse with me. This enterprise control is not a universal consumer setting.

Troubleshooting common problems

The Browse with Copilot option is missing

Check that you are signed in with the account you intend to use and that it meets Microsoft’s stated consumer eligibility. The feature is rolling out rather than appearing for every Edge user at once, and Microsoft does not publish one required Edge build number in the cited guidance. If you are outside a currently served market or do not have the described subscription, the button may not be offered yet.

For a work account, do not use consumer eligibility as the test. The enterprise preview is opt-in and controlled by your tenant. Contact IT and ask whether Browse with Copilot is enabled for your account and whether the current site is on an allowed list.

The Context Clues switch is missing

Open the More menu from the Edge window that contains your active profile, then go to Settings > Copilot and AI. If the wording is different, verify that you are in Edge settings rather than a standalone Copilot page. Managed devices may apply organization policy, so an administrator may need to explain or change the available control.

Copilot still gives page-based answers after you turned Context Clues off

Confirm that the exact option, Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web, is switched off. Then start a fresh request and avoid assuming that a general answer proves Copilot read the page. Microsoft’s documented effect is removal of browsing data for website- or activity-based requests, along with potentially less relevant suggestions and responses.

Copilot takes an unexpected action

Interrupt the active task using the control displayed in Edge. Inspect the current tab and any other open tabs for changes, especially forms, account settings or checkout pages. Afterward, use narrower instructions, remove unrelated tabs and avoid sensitive tasks. Hidden page instructions and ordinary misunderstandings can both lead to behavior you did not intend.

A site will not complete the requested task

Some pages may not be compatible with the action Copilot is trying to perform, and enterprise policies can block a site outright. Check whether the account is managed, whether the site is allowed, and whether the task requires a confirmation that only you can provide. Do not repeatedly retry a financial or account-changing action without checking what the first attempt did.

Practical checklist before and after use

  • Confirm that you selected Browse with Copilot, not merely opened a normal Copilot chat.
  • Read any first-use consent form before accepting it.
  • Close unrelated tabs, particularly tabs containing confidential information.
  • Write a specific request with a clear stopping point.
  • Keep the browser visible and monitor each navigation, click and text entry.
  • Interrupt the run when the next action is unclear or unsafe.
  • Review the final page yourself before submitting a form, purchase or booking.
  • If you want to limit web context in answers, separately turn off Context Clues; do not assume the browsing mode was disabled.
  • For a work account, check the tenant’s site policy or ask IT before troubleshooting consumer settings.

What Microsoft’s instructions establish

The documented steps support starting Browse with Copilot when the option is offered and disabling Context Clues through Edge’s Copilot and AI settings. They do not establish a universal consumer switch for removing Browse with Copilot, a version-specific rollout date, or unrestricted operation on every website. Keeping those boundaries in mind prevents the most common mistake: turning off one privacy-related setting and assuming that an action-taking feature has also been disabled.
