Brown Brothers Media stopped publishing across much of its portfolio after Futurism investigated the company’s acquisition and AI-publishing model, the publication reported on September 30, 2026. Futurism also observed that many of the company’s sites had become difficult to find in Google Search or no longer appeared in Google News. That sequence does not establish that Google imposed a penalty: Google did not respond to the follow-up, and no direct confirmation of enforcement was reported.
What happened, and when?
The reports describe a short sequence of events. The first two entries are Futurism articles; the last is its account of what it observed afterward.

- September 17, 2026: Futurism published an investigation into Brown Brothers Media, its publishing model, and editorial concerns it reported.
- September 18, 2026: Futurism published a list of publications it associated with the company.
- September 30, 2026: Futurism reported that publishing had stopped across much of the portfolio and described apparent declines in Google visibility. It said the duration of the halt was unknown.
The timing shows that the halt followed the investigation. It does not show that the investigation caused the halt, or that Google caused either event. Futurism reported that neither Google nor Brown Brothers Media responded to its requests for comment on the pause.

Futurism identified Justin, Lachlan, and Brendan Brown as the company’s co-founders and described a strategy of acquiring online publications and publishing high volumes of AI-generated material. Its investigation reported concerns about plagiarism, fabricated reporting, and author identities presented as those of journalists or subject-matter experts. Those are the investigation’s reported findings and allegations, not legal determinations.

The company’s own editorial framework provides a separate account: it describes AI tools as a substantial part of production and acknowledges inadequate controls over contributor identity and first-person material. That statement is the company’s description of its practices; it is not an independent verification of every detail in Futurism’s investigation.
What the traffic figures do—and do not—show
Futurism reported that Brown Brothers Media claimed 50 million page views per month in 2025. It also cited Similarweb’s estimate of 64.7 million visits per month as the network’s average over the year preceding the September 2026 investigation. These are different metrics from different sources: page views count pages loaded, while visits count browsing sessions. Futurism cautioned that external observers cannot verify the company’s traffic without internal data, so neither figure should be treated as an audited total.

Which sites were affected, and what was visible on Google?
In its September 30 follow-up, Futurism named VegOut, Silicon Canals, Space Daily, Hack Spirit, and Scandinavian Standard among publications whose visibility appeared affected. It said MakeTechEasier and Ideapod still appeared in Google results at that time. These were observations made for that report, not a permanent or current status guarantee.
The follow-up also reported that VegOut had halted publication and appeared to have removed posts published since May. Silicon Canals and other sites had stopped posting new material. The article did not establish that every publication in the portfolio had the same publishing or search status.

Google News and Google Search are distinct surfaces. A site’s absence from News does not by itself show that it is absent from all Search results; Google’s News policy says content ineligible for News surfaces may still appear elsewhere in Search if it complies with applicable policies.

No blanket prohibition is established by Google’s published guidance. Google Search Central’s February 8, 2023 guidance says: “Using automation—including AI—to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking in search results is a violation of our spam policies.” Google frames the issue around purpose and policy compliance, not simply whether AI was used.

They do not prove that any Brown Brothers Media site violated them or explain the visibility changes Futurism described.

What remains unknown?
- Why publishing stopped: The follow-up did not provide a definitive explanation from Brown Brothers Media.
- Whether the halt was temporary: Futurism said its duration was unclear.
- Why visibility changed: No direct Google confirmation that a manual action or other enforcement caused the reported Search or News changes was cited.
- How long the observed status lasted: The visibility and publication details describe conditions reported on September 30, 2026; they should not be read as a live status check.
