How duplex works—and where it stops
Automatic two-sided printing can reduce the need to flip pages when producing double-sided documents. It does not extend to copying or scanning: Brother lists duplex copying and duplex scanning as unavailable. The ADF can feed a stack of multi-page, single-sided originals, but it does not scan both sides of each sheet automatically. For double-sided originals, plan to turn and re-feed pages yourself.

Brother lists single-sided scan speeds up to 23.6 images per minute in black and 7.9 images per minute in color. Those are stated maximums, not observed workflow speeds; handling and re-feeding double-sided originals adds steps beyond the published single-sided figures.

Brother lists USB 2.0 and Ethernet alongside dual-band Wi-Fi for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. Compatibility includes Apple AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct, and Brother Mobile Connect. Toner, drum, and what comes in the box
Toner and drum are separate consumables. Brother lists TN830 standard-yield toner, TN830XL high-yield toner, TN830V value high-yield toner, and TN830XL two-packs for the printer; DR830 is the replacement drum. Brother’s support material gives approximate yields of 1,200 pages for TN830 and 15,000 pages for DR830, while the product listing specifies a 3,000-page yield for TN830XL. The standard MFC-L2820DW package includes a 700-page starter toner cartridge and DR830 drum. The separately sold MFC-L2820DW XL bundle includes TN830 and TN830XL cartridges with an approximate combined yield of 4,200 pages, plus the same DR830 drum, according to Brother’s XL product listing. The stated difference is the initial toner bundle; it does not establish a different scanning capability.

To compare ownership options, consider your expected print volume against the relevant cartridge yield, then compare the current price premium for the XL package. No current price comparison or cost-per-page calculation is established here, and yield depends on how you print.
Who should consider it?
- A plausible fit: A home office or small workplace that needs black-and-white printing, copying, scanning, and faxing, and values automatic two-sided printing.
- Think carefully if you scan double-sided originals often: The ADF handles multi-page feeding, but Brother does not list duplex scanning or copying.
- Look elsewhere if you need color printouts: The scanner captures color, but the printer is monochrome.
- Compare supplies before choosing a package: Check expected volume, included toner, and current prices rather than assuming the XL bundle is automatically the better value.
Verdict
The MFC-L2820DW’s appeal is its combination of four document functions, a 50-sheet ADF, and automatic duplex printing. The decision hinges on workflow: it can help with stacks of single-sided originals and two-sided print jobs, but it is not a hands-off solution for double-sided scanning or copying.
