Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe Brother MFC-J5740DW is a four-function inkjet all-in-one built for office printing, copying, scanning and faxing, with A3 printing and three paper feeds. Its key limitation is that A3 print support does not extend to scanning or copying: Brother’s cited Nordic specification lists those functions up to A4. The published specifications make it a plausible small-office fit, but they do not establish real-world print quality, reliability, noise or speed.
What the Brother MFC-J5740DW does
Brother positions the MFC-J5740DW as an office and workgroup inkjet. It combines printing, copying, scanning and faxing, so it can handle routine document workflows without separate devices. The UK product listing describes the model and its office features at Brother UK’s MFC-J5740DW product page.

Can it print, scan and copy A3?
It can print A3, which is useful for larger charts, spreadsheets, posters and other office documents. The Nordic datasheet distinguishes print size from scan and copy size: it specifies A3/A4 printing but scanning and copying only up to A4. Do not choose this model on the assumption that it can scan or copy A3 originals. See Brother Europe’s MFC-J5740DW datasheet.

Brother UK lists two 250-sheet paper trays and a 100-sheet multipurpose tray. That gives a total stated capacity of 600 sheets across the trays, with the multipurpose feed offering a separate place for media or sizes you do not want to keep in the main trays. Actual convenience will depend on the paper sizes and types your office uses.

How fast does it print?
Brother Europe’s datasheet gives maximum A4 speeds of 28 images per minute (ipm) for one-sided printing and 21 ipm for two-sided printing, for both mono and colour. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent test of the printer. They should not be treated as a guarantee of the time a particular job will take; jobs, settings and document content can affect actual throughput.
Ink cartridges and running costs
The UK Brother store listing identifies the LC422 cartridge family for this model. It lists standard cartridges at 550 pages and XL cartridges at 3,000 pages for black and 1,500 pages for each colour cartridge. These are manufacturer-listed yields for the UK listing and specific cartridge variants; actual yields can vary with what is printed and how the printer is used. Check Brother’s UK MFC-J5740DW listing before buying consumables, and verify cartridge compatibility with the Brother supply listing for your country. The cited information does not establish current retail cartridge prices, so it is not enough to calculate a current cost per page.

Who should consider the MFC-J5740DW?
- A small office that needs A3 output: It can print larger documents while handling everyday A4 copying and scanning.
- A workgroup that changes paper often: The two main trays and multipurpose tray provide separate loaded-paper options.
- An office consolidating equipment: Printing, copying, scanning and faxing are combined in one machine.
- Anyone comparing lifetime costs: Use the listed cartridge yields as a starting point, but confirm local cartridge compatibility and prices before estimating costs.
It is a less suitable choice if A3 scanning or copying is essential. The available manufacturer material also cannot answer how its print quality, setup experience, reliability or noise compares with competing machines; those questions require independent hands-on testing.
