Brother’s MFC-J1205W and MFC-J1215W are closely matched wireless color inkjet all-in-one printers: both print, copy, and scan, hold up to 150 sheets, and lack automatic two-sided printing. The practical choice comes down to current purchase price, the different assumptions behind Brother’s in-box ink estimate, and whether their shared features fit your workload. Brother’s published specifications support a feature comparison, but not a verdict on print quality, speed, reliability, or setup experience.
What’s different between the MFC-J1205W and MFC-J1215W?
Brother lists the same core functions, connections, paper capacity, recommended monthly volume, and dimensions for both US models. The listed weight and the monthly page assumptions behind the “up to one year of ink” claims differ.

How much ink do they include, and what ink do they use?
Replacement ink: LC404
Brother identifies LC404 cartridges as compatible replacement ink for both models. Its support information gives an approximate yield of up to 750 pages per replacement cartridge under ISO/IEC 24711, a standard test method. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a promise of the number of pages every user will print; coverage and usage affect actual yield. Brother’s LC404 cyan cartridge page names the MFC-J1205W and MFC-J1215W among compatible models.

Starter cartridges and the one-year claim
Brother’s support article says the MFC-J1205W ships with LC404 INKvestment Tank Super High Yield starter cartridges. It estimates about 1,100 pages from the black starter cartridge and 650 pages from each color starter cartridge under ISO/IEC 24711. Brother says starter yields are approximately 87% of replacement-cartridge yields because ink-system initialization uses ink. These figures and the one-year estimates are conditional manufacturer calculations, not guarantees for a particular print mix or household.
The two product pages use different monthly volumes for their “up to one year” claims: about 100 pages for the J1205W and about 80 for the J1215W, each assuming 60% black and 40% color. Compare the underlying assumptions rather than treating the claim as a promise that either printer will last a year between cartridge changes. Details are in Brother’s in-box ink calculation support article.

Consider one if your workload is modest
Brother recommends 50–1,000 pages per month for each printer, describing that range as appropriate for best performance and printer life. The separate maximum duty-cycle figure of up to 2,500 pages per month is a ceiling, not the recommended routine workload. Both have a 150-sheet input tray, so regular high-volume printing may require frequent refills.

Look elsewhere if you need automatic two-sided printing
Neither model automatically prints both sides. You can still print individual pages on both sides by manually turning and reinserting paper, but that requires handling between sides and is not automatic duplex printing.
Confirm your connection and mobile-printing needs
Brother lists wireless, Wireless Direct, USB 2.0, and Mobile Connect support for these models, along with mobile-printing options. Confirm that the printer, app, and phone or computer support your preferred connection before buying; wireless and app availability can depend on device and region.
