The Brother HL-L5210DW is a print-only monochrome laser printer aimed at offices that produce mostly black-and-white documents. Brother’s U.S. specifications list automatic two-sided printing, dual-band Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet, and print speeds up to 48 pages per minute. Those are manufacturer ratings, not independent test results; the available evidence does not establish real-world speed, print quality, noise, reliability, or current street price.
Is the Brother HL-L5210DW a good printer for a small office?
It is a plausible fit if your office mainly prints black-only documents and needs network printing, automatic duplexing, and room to expand paper capacity. It is not an all-in-one: Brother describes it as a printer, with no scanning or copying function, and its U.S. product description specifies monochrome output.

Brother’s U.S. product materials list a 1.2 GHz processor, 256 MB memory, and maximum resolution of 1200 × 1200 dpi. These are specifications rather than an independent assessment of output quality. The rated speed may vary in practice with the job, paper, settings, and connection.

Does the HL-L5210DW print double-sided?
Yes. Brother lists automatic duplex printing, so the printer can print on both sides without requiring you to turn the pages over manually. This is useful for routine multipage office documents; the model’s monochrome, print-only scope remains the key limitation if you also need color, scanning, or copying.
How do you connect the HL-L5210DW to Wi-Fi or a network?
Brother lists dual-band wireless networking on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, as well as Gigabit Ethernet and Hi-Speed USB 2.0. The manufacturer also lists AirPrint, Brother Mobile Connect, Mopria, and Wi-Fi Direct for mobile printing.
The product information establishes the available connection types, but not a single universal setup sequence for every router, operating system, or firmware version. For current setup instructions, drivers, downloads, and supported operating systems, use the HL-L5210DW model support page. Brother’s support listings include Windows, macOS, Apple Silicon, and ChromeOS; check the live page for the version you use, and follow Brother’s guidance to keep firmware updated.

How much paper does it hold, and can you add trays?
The standard configuration has a 250-sheet adjustable main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose tray. Brother lists output capacity of up to 150 sheets face down, or one sheet face up. Its U.S. materials list Letter and Legal sizes for the main tray, with broader custom dimensions available through the multipurpose tray. Supported media include plain, letterhead, colored and recycled paper, bond, labels, and envelopes. Confirm the regional documentation if you are buying or using a model outside the United States.
Brother lists two optional trays; neither should be assumed to come in the box. Adding them can reduce how often you replenish paper, at the cost of buying and accommodating an accessory:
| Optional tray | Listed capacity |
|---|---|
| LT-5505 | 250 sheets |
| LT-6505 | 520 sheets |
Brother says total input capacity can reach 1,390 sheets with optional trays. Check the product listing for the exact bundle and included hardware before purchase.

What toner does the Brother HL-L5210DW use?
For the U.S. model, Brother lists the TN920 toner family. The printer is listed with a TN920 standard-yield cartridge, with an approximate 3,000-page yield. Replacement options and Brother’s approximate yields are:
| Cartridge | Approximate yield |
|---|---|
| TN920 | 3,000 pages |
| TN920XL | 6,000 pages |
| TN920V | 6,600 pages |
| TN920XXL | 11,000 pages |
These are Brother’s approximate yields based on ISO/IEC 19752, as stated in its 2025 U.S. brochure; actual results vary with document content and use. Check regional compatibility before ordering supplies outside the U.S.
Toner and drum are separate supplies
The DR920 is the separately listed drum unit, not a toner cartridge. Brother estimates its life at approximately 45,000 pages when based on one page per job, or up to 75,000 pages based on three pages per job. Media type, size, and other factors affect the result, so treat these as estimates rather than a guaranteed replacement interval. Source: Brother’s 2025 U.S. product brochure.

What workload is it designed for?
Brother recommends a monthly print volume of up to 5,000 pages and lists a maximum monthly duty cycle of up to 90,000 pages. These figures serve different purposes: the recommended volume is the more useful planning benchmark for regular work, while the maximum duty cycle is a ceiling used to compare designed durability. It is not a target for routine monthly printing. Brother advises choosing a printer whose duty cycle exceeds your expected requirements.
What are the main limitations to weigh?
- Monochrome and print-only: It is not the right choice if you need color printing, a scanner, or a copier in the same device.
- Real-world performance is not established here: The cited speed and resolution are manufacturer specifications; independent print-quality, speed, noise, and reliability testing was not established.
- Running cost needs current prices: Cartridge yields help compare supply options, but current toner and drum prices are needed to calculate cost per page.
- Warranty details are limited: Brother’s U.S. product page lists a one-year limited warranty. It does not establish the full exclusions or service process here, and regional terms may differ.
Verdict: who should consider the HL-L5210DW?
Consider it if your priority is black-and-white office printing with automatic duplexing, wired or wireless networking, and the option to add paper trays. Look elsewhere if you need color, scanning, or copying. Before buying, compare current consumable prices and confirm the driver support, included tray configuration, and warranty terms for your region.
