What the DCP-L2540DW driver does
A Windows driver is the software layer that lets Windows send print jobs to the Brother DCP-L2540DW and, when installed, receive scans from its scanner. The universal PCL listing is separate from the model-focused package. Brother notes that it is intended for multiple Brother print devices and is not supported on Windows XP Home Edition. For a personal DCP-L2540DW setup, use the model page’s full package unless your administrator has given you a specific reason to use the universal driver.
How to decide in one minute
- Need normal USB, Ethernet or Wi‑Fi setup with printing and scanning? Use the Full Driver & Software Package.
- Need only a direct USB connection but still scan? Use Printer Driver & Scanner Driver for USB.
- Need printing only? Use Printer Driver; it intentionally does not add scanner support.
- Manage several Brother printers under an organization-wide PCL workflow? Ask the administrator whether the Universal Printer Driver for PCL is required.
- Already installed the printer but its network address changed? Try the Network Connection Repair Tool instead of reinstalling everything.
- Have remnants of a failed setup? Run the Uninstall Tool, restart, and install again.
Windows versions shown on Brother’s page
The current selector lists Windows 11; Windows 10 (32-bit); Windows 10 (64-bit); Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2; Windows Server 2016; Windows Server 2019; Windows Server 2022; and Windows Server 2025. Select the entry that matches the computer running the installer, not merely the computer that will submit print jobs.
Check your Windows edition and architecture
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Read Windows specifications for the edition and version.
- Read System type to determine whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit. Windows 11 is 64-bit only, while Windows 10 is listed separately by architecture on Brother’s page.
On a Windows Server installation, use the matching Server entry rather than a Windows 10 or Windows 11 selection. If your old Windows release is no longer supported by Microsoft, Brother says previously provided software remains in the Downloads section, but it does not provide new software for Windows versions Microsoft no longer supports.

Do not choose an operating-system entry based on the printer’s age or on another computer’s version. The installer must match the Windows system on which it will run. If several computers will print to the same networked DCP-L2540DW, install the appropriate package separately on each computer.
Prepare before downloading
- Write down the exact model name, DCP-L2540DW, from the printer’s label or front panel.
- Decide whether you will use USB, Ethernet, or Wi‑Fi. The connection choice determines which cables and network details you need during setup.
- For a wireless installation, have the Wi‑Fi network name and password available. Brother’s quick guide also recommends having a USB cable ready temporarily for some wireless setup paths.
- Save open work and sign in with an account that can install software. Windows may display a User Account Control prompt.
- If an older Brother driver is already installed and the printer has been unreliable, plan a clean removal with Brother’s Uninstall Tool before reinstalling.
- Make sure there is enough free disk space for the 435.67 MB full download and its extracted setup files. The smaller USB packages are 33.77 MB.
Download only from Brother’s DCP-L2540DW support page. A search result for a neighboring DCP or MFC model can offer a package that looks similar but does not match this printer. Check the model name again on the download page, in the file name and in the installer window.
Download and install the full package
Brother’s Quick Setup Guide, Version D, instructs users to download the full driver and software package from the Brother Solutions Center and then follow the on-screen instructions until the Connection Type screen appears. The following sequence applies whether the computer has a disc drive or not.
- Open Brother’s DCP-L2540DW Downloads page and select your Windows edition and, where offered, its 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Choose Full Driver & Software Package. Check that the model shown is DCP-L2540DW and that the release information is the package you intend to use.
- Save the download, then open it from your browser’s Downloads folder. Approve the Windows security prompt if it appears.
- Read and accept the license terms, then continue through the installer until Connection Type appears.
- Select USB, Wired Network, or Wireless Network, based on how the printer will communicate with this computer.
- Follow the prompts for the selected connection. Do not unplug a USB cable or switch networks while the installer is detecting the machine.
- Allow the installer to finish copying drivers and utilities. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- After setup, print a Windows test page. If you installed the scanner driver, open the Windows scanning workflow and make a test scan.
If a connection attempt fails, Brother’s guide says to repeat that step. Check the physical connection or wireless details first, then return to the installer rather than selecting a package for another model.

Computers with and without a CD-ROM drive
The quick guide separates computers that have a CD-ROM drive from those that do not. If your computer has no drive, use the downloaded package from Brother’s Solutions Center; the installation flow still ends at the same Connection Type screen. If you do use a disc, the model and Windows selection should still be verified against Brother’s current support page before relying on older software.
Connection-specific instructions
USB installation
Select USB at the Connection Type screen. Connect the DCP-L2540DW directly to the computer when the installer asks for the cable; avoid an unpowered hub while Windows is discovering the printer. Wait for the installer to confirm detection before closing it. The 33.77 MB Printer Driver & Scanner Driver for USB package is the smaller alternative when you need USB printing and scanning but not the full software suite.
If Windows creates more than one DCP-L2540DW queue, keep the queue created by the current installer and remove stale duplicates after confirming the working one. A direct USB setup does not require the printer and computer to share a Wi‑Fi network, but the cable must remain connected for printing and scanning.
Ethernet installation
For a wired network, connect the printer to the router or network switch before choosing Wired Network. The computer and printer should be on the same local network. The installer searches for the machine and records its network address in Windows. If the printer later receives a different address from the router and becomes unreachable, use Brother’s Network Connection Repair Tool; it can locate the machine and update the IP address stored in the printer driver.
Run the repair utility on the computer that reports the printer as offline. It is intended to correct the address in the installed driver, not to replace the full driver package. After it finishes, print a Windows test page and confirm that the selected queue points to the DCP-L2540DW.
Wi‑Fi installation
Choose Wireless Network and follow the prompts to select the wireless network and enter its security key. Brother’s quick guide says compatible routers can use WPS/AOSS one-push setup: press the router’s WPS/AOSS button, then press the machine’s WiFi button. Some setup paths use a USB cable temporarily to transfer wireless settings, so keep one available even when the final connection will be Wi‑Fi.
Once the installer reports completion, disconnect any temporary USB cable and print a test page over Wi‑Fi. If the page prints while the computer is on a different guest network, move both devices to the same ordinary local network; guest isolation can prevent printer discovery. If wireless discovery fails, repeat the connection step as Brother recommends and recheck the network name and password rather than installing a different model’s driver.

Verify printing and scanning in Windows
Print a test page
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners (the wording may be Devices and Printers on older Windows versions).
- Select Brother DCP-L2540DW, open its printer properties, and choose Print Test Page.
- Confirm that the page shows the expected model and that text is not held in an error or offline queue.
A successful test page confirms that Windows can send a job to the selected queue. It does not by itself confirm scanner installation or every network feature, so test scanning separately when that function is required.

Open the Windows scanning application and look for the DCP-L2540DW as the source. A printer-only installation will not provide scanner functions; install the full package or the Printer Driver & Scanner Driver for USB package when scanning is required. If the scanner is not listed after installing one of those packages, restart Windows and reconnect using the same USB or network method selected during setup.
Troubleshoot common installation failures
The installer cannot find a USB printer
- Unplug and reconnect the cable directly to another computer USB port.
- Turn the printer off, restart Windows, turn the printer on, and rerun the installer.
- Use the USB-specific printer/scanner package if the full installer repeatedly stops at device detection.
- Do not install a package labeled for a different DCP or MFC model.
The printer appears offline or unreachable over the network
- Confirm that the printer is powered on and connected to the same local network as the computer.
- Print or view the printer’s network information to see whether its address changed.
- Run Brother’s Network Connection Repair Tool. Brother says it can automatically locate the machine and update its IP address inside the printer driver.
- Print a test page again. If discovery still fails, temporarily connect by USB to verify that the driver itself is installed before investigating the router or wireless signal.
A previous installation is interfering
Use Brother’s Uninstall Tool to remove the existing driver, restart Windows, and then rerun the full package. Brother describes the tool as useful when reinstalling through Windows Plug and Play. Remove stale entries for the DCP-L2540DW from Windows’ printer list as well, so the new installation does not keep using an old network port.
Printing works but scanning does not
Check which package was installed. The Printer Driver package is intentionally print-only. Install the full package or the Printer Driver & Scanner Driver for USB package, then reconnect the scanner using the same USB or network method selected during setup.
The download is missing for an old Windows release
Return to the operating-system selector and look for previously provided software. Brother keeps older software in the Downloads section where available, but does not create new packages for Windows versions that Microsoft no longer supports. A supported newer computer may therefore be required for the latest package.

Repeat the connection step, as Brother’s guide advises. For USB, wait until the installer asks before connecting the cable. For Ethernet, connect the network cable before selecting Wired Network. For Wi‑Fi, verify the network credentials and keep the temporary USB cable available if that setup path requests it.
When to choose a smaller package
The full package is 435.67 MB and includes the broadest setup components, making it the practical choice for a first installation or a repair in which both printing and scanning matter. Choose the 33.77 MB USB printer/scanner package when the printer will stay connected by USB and you want fewer components. Choose the 33.77 MB printer-only package when scanning is not needed. The universal PCL package is an administrative option for multiple Brother devices, not a general replacement for the DCP-L2540DW package.

There is no advantage to installing every package at once. Multiple overlapping queues can make it unclear which port Windows is using. Start with one package that matches your connection and capabilities, then add a repair or uninstall utility only when its specific purpose applies.
