Brooklyn Man Sentenced to 4–12 Years in $15.9 Million Coinbase Phishing Scheme

Ronald Spektor, 23, was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to a scheme that Brooklyn prosecutors said stole about $15.944 million from roughly 100 Coinbase users. The sentence, imposed September 23, 2026, was below the seven-to-21-year term prosecutors had sought, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.

What sentence did Ronald Spektor receive?

Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun sentenced Spektor, of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, to four to 12 years in prison on September 23, 2026. The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office said Spektor had pleaded guilty on September 2 to the entire 31-count indictment, including first-degree money laundering, first-degree grand larceny and first-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Prosecutors sought seven to 21 years, but the plea agreement called for the four-to-12-year sentence over the prosecution’s objection, the DA’s Office said. The sentence imposed and the longer term requested are separate figures; the requested term was not the court’s sentence.

How did the Coinbase scam work?

The DA described the scheme as phishing and social engineering, not a demonstrated breach of Coinbase’s systems. Spektor allegedly posed as a Coinbase representative and told users that hackers threatened their assets. He persuaded them to move cryptocurrency to a new wallet they believed they controlled; prosecutors said the wallet was accessible to Spektor, who then emptied accounts.

That distinction matters: according to the prosecution’s account, victims were deceived into authorizing transfers. The case does not establish that Spektor hacked Coinbase’s platform or obtained customer funds by breaking into its database.

How the stolen crypto was moved

Prosecutors said Spektor laundered the cryptocurrency through swaps, mixing services, gambling services and online storefronts. The sentencing release said investigators used transaction records, blockchain analysis, digital forensics and evidence from multiple search warrants. The DA also said Spektor’s home IP address was linked to multiple wallets from which cryptocurrency was stolen, and that investigators recovered messages describing online recruiting and bragging.

Those investigative details are the DA’s account of the case. Its earlier charging announcement said Coinbase helped identify the perpetrator and defrauded customers, provided evidence, and assisted law enforcement in tracing and recovering funds; the DA also thanked blockchain-intelligence company Flashpoint.

How much was lost, repaid and forfeited?

The figures describe different things: estimated victim losses, court-ordered restitution and property subject to forfeiture. They should not be treated as interchangeable.

Figure What it refers to
About $15.944 million Approximate loss attributed by the Brooklyn DA’s Office to its yearlong investigation; the victims were about 100 Coinbase users in the United States.
Almost $16 million Restitution Spektor was ordered to pay, according to the sentencing release. This is a court order, not a statement that all victims have already been repaid.
More than $500,000 Estimated value of cash, cryptocurrency and personal property forfeited, as reported by the DA at sentencing.
About $105,000 cash and approximately $400,000 in cryptocurrency Assets prosecutors said had been seized as of the December 19, 2025, charging announcement. That earlier snapshot is not the final forfeiture valuation.

The loss, restitution and forfeiture amounts come from the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office’s September 23, 2026, sentencing release. The earlier seizure figures were reported in its December 19, 2025, charging release.

How to respond to a “safe wallet” warning

The DA’s practical warning is direct: Coinbase and most other companies will never call customers and ask them to transfer cryptocurrency to a “safe wallet.” Caller ID, sender names and lookalike domains can be spoofed, so a familiar-looking contact is not proof that a message is genuine.

  1. Stop before transferring. Do not move crypto because a caller or message creates urgency or claims your assets are under immediate threat.
  2. Verify independently. Contact the company through its trusted in-app support channel rather than a phone number, link or reply supplied by the person who contacted you.
  3. Secure your account. Use two-factor authentication or a security key where available. Check the current official instructions for your account and devices; a security key is an account-protection measure, not a guarantee against social engineering.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said the case was built by following the digital trail and that the sentence should warn crypto scammers they will be pursued. The prosecution’s account underscores why a transfer can be difficult to reverse once a victim has been manipulated into sending funds to a wallet controlled by someone else.
