A bronze signet ring bearing a relief image of the Lighthouse of Alexandria has been uncovered at the palace site on the submerged island of Antirhodos in Egypt. The European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (IEASM) announced the find on 7 October 2026. The ring’s imagery links it to Alexandria’s famous lighthouse, but its date, owner and actual use have not been established.
What was found, and where?
IEASM says its team found a bronze ring-signet during ongoing underwater excavations at the palace on Antirhodos. The relief on the ring depicts the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The project and Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities describe it as the first known bronze signet ring of its kind; that novelty claim is theirs, rather than a conclusion independently established by a survey of every known collection. IEASM’s announcement and The National’s report describe the discovery.

Antirhodos was an island in Alexandria’s ancient royal quarter, within the Portus Magnus, or Great Harbour. The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities describes the Eastern Harbour as Alexandria’s ancient royal port, covering about 600 hectares at depths of 2–8 metres. Its overview records underwater remains believed to include a royal palace, theatre and temple. The Ministry’s Eastern Harbour page is broad site context, not a report on this ring.
Does the ring date to the second century AD?
Not on the evidence reported so far. IEASM says the ring’s image resembles lighthouse iconography found on some second-century AD coins. That is a comparison of imagery, not a direct date for the ring. The National reports that IEASM has not given a firm date. The public accounts also give no measurements, named owner or published technical analysis establishing how the ring was used.

What might the find say about the palace?
Excavation leader Franck Goddio interprets the ring’s discovery at the palace as a clue to Antirhodos’s role. He said: “The discovery of the ring-signet is even more important as it has been excavated in the legendary palace of the Island of Antirhodos, that once was a centre of power”. Goddio suggests the palace had administrative offices, possibly including functions connected with the lighthouse. That is a provisional interpretation: the discovery does not establish that the ring belonged to a lighthouse official or was used in lighthouse administration.
Antirhodos was not the lighthouse island
The ring was found at Antirhodos, but the Lighthouse of Alexandria stood on the separate island of Pharos. The French Ministry of Culture gives the lighthouse’s completion as 283 BC and its height as 135 metres; those figures describe the monument, not the ring’s age or dimensions. Its account also notes that submerged parts of ancient Alexandria lie 6–8 metres below the sea and that underwater archaeological work takes place in difficult visibility. The Ministry’s underwater archaeology page provides the historical and site context.

IEASM, working under Goddio, carried out a topographic survey of the Eastern Harbour in 1992 that mapped harbour structures and identified Antirhodos, according to the Egyptian Ministry’s overview. The ring belongs to later ongoing excavation at the palace site, not to that survey.
