The finding traces British tin to the eastern Mediterranean, but it does not show that British ships sailed directly to Israel: the proposed route likely involved traders and exchanges through France, Sardinia and Cyprus.
What the 2025 finding establishes
The study led by Alan Williams and Benjamin Roberts compared chemical and isotope characteristics in tin artefacts with those of candidate ores. The results linked tin from the three Israeli-coast wrecks to south-west Britain, especially Cornwall and Devon. The conclusion applies to the ingots examined from those wrecks; it is not a claim about every Bronze Age wreck or all tin circulating in the Mediterranean.

The finding adds evidence that tin travelled a very long way during the Bronze Age. Durham University’s 7 May 2025 account describes the trade distance as up to 4,000 km. That is a reported distance for the trade, not evidence of a single ship making a direct Britain-to-Israel voyage.
How British tin could reach the eastern Mediterranean
The proposed movement was staged through networks of traders and exchange, with France, Sardinia and Cyprus among the places identified in Durham University’s account. These are route inferences: the provenance result identifies where the metal’s ore came from, not the precise itinerary of each ingot or the identity of the people who carried it.

Durham also reported an estimate of tens of tons of tin traded each year. This is an estimate of trade scale, not a measured annual export total or a surviving Bronze Age shipping ledger. It reflects the inferred demand for tin alongside hundreds of tons of copper in circulation, as described in the university’s account.
How archaeologists identify tin’s geological source
Provenance studies compare trace elements and isotope characteristics in archaeological metal with those found in ores from possible source regions. The 2025 account describes a combined chemical and isotope analysis of ores and artefacts. A close match can support a source attribution, but a single isotope measurement is not an infallible fingerprint.

Lead isotope results need particular care. Cassiterite, the main tin ore, has a uranium-thorium-lead system that can affect isotope ratios. In addition, lead-bearing minerals such as galena, or lead introduced during smelting and casting, can change the lead signal. The geological source of the tin, the source of lead mixed with it, and the route by which the metal travelled are related questions, but they are not interchangeable.
Why this finding does not apply to the Uluburun wreck
Uluburun is a separate shipwreck with a different analytical result. Its tin should not be folded into the 2025 conclusion about the three wrecks off Israel.

| Wreck context | Date and recovered tin | Reported provenance | What the result means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Three wrecks off Israel | Around 1300 BC; the 2025 account does not state a comparable total quantity. | South-west Britain, particularly Cornwall and Devon, according to the study reported by Durham University in 2025. | Supports long-distance movement of British tin into the eastern Mediterranean; the route is inferred, not established as a direct voyage. |
| Uluburun | About 1320 BC. A University of Haifa record summarizing Powell et al. (2021) says at least 117 ingots, roughly one tonne, were raised between 1984 and 1994. | The 2021 analysis found high lead concentrations in more than half of the analyzed ingots, with that lead attributed to a south-central Taurus source. A lower-lead group was considered most likely to be associated with the Tienshan Mountains. | The result is complex and includes evidence about lead that may not identify the tin’s source by itself; it does not support assigning Uluburun’s tin to Cornwall and Devon. |
The contrast matters because a shipwreck is a snapshot of cargo assembled through trade, not a simple map of a single mine-to-ship route. Different ingots on one vessel may also carry different signals, and lead contamination can complicate what those signals say about the tin itself.

A 2019 PLOS ONE study had already concluded that Cornish mines were the most likely source for the Israeli tin ingots it examined, dated to the 13th–12th centuries BC. That paper also distinguished its result from the apparently different provenance indicated for tin from Mochlos and Uluburun. The 2025 study adds a later analysis concerning three wrecks off Israel; the two publications should be read as related evidence with distinct sample scopes, not as proof that all ancient Mediterranean tin came from Britain.
