If your Samsung phone is damaged, first check Google Photos, Samsung Cloud, and any earlier Smart Switch or computer backup. Those copies may be available even if the handset is not. If they are not, the next step depends on whether the phone powers on, can be unlocked, accepts touch input, or has a removable SD card. No method is guaranteed for a phone that will not turn on.
First, check whether your photos are already backed up
Use another phone or computer to sign in to the Google account you used on the Galaxy and check Google Photos. Then check the Samsung account and Samsung Cloud. These are separate backup services, and either one helps only if the relevant photos were uploaded before the phone failed.

Samsung Cloud backups are configurable: users choose which categories to include, so a device backup does not necessarily contain every Gallery photo. Automatic backup also depends on its settings and conditions. Samsung’s current service description says temporary cloud backup can retain device data for up to 30 days before a repair or device change; availability depends on country, carrier, and model, and requires a Samsung account. Samsung’s broken-screen guidance and Samsung Cloud information explain the available routes and limits.

If you previously backed up the phone to a computer with Smart Switch or another backup method, check that computer and confirm the backup contains the photos you need. A backup is useful only if it completed and includes the files in question.

If the phone powers on and you can unlock it
Copy the photos over USB
- Use a USB cable that supports data transfer, not just charging.
- Unlock the phone, then connect it to the computer.
- Open the phone in the computer’s file browser and copy the photo folders you need to a separate folder on the computer.
Samsung states, “Your phone has to be unlocked for you to access your files this way.” If the phone does not appear, do not assume repeated connection attempts or generic recovery software can bypass the lock. First consider whether you can make the handset visible or operate it using the options below. Samsung’s instructions for accessing data from a broken-screen phone describe this unlock requirement.
Back up with Smart Switch
Smart Switch for PC or Mac may be able to back up an operational, connected phone. The handset may display an approval prompt, such as Allow, that you must accept. If you cannot see or operate the phone well enough to authorize the connection, this route may not work.
Smart Switch does not transfer every kind of content. Samsung notes exclusions that can include data from separately installed apps, depending on those apps’ policies; secure or locked content can also be limited depending on the transfer. Check the completed backup rather than assuming it includes everything. Samsung’s broken-screen guide covers PC and Mac backup, while Samsung’s Smart Switch guidance describes transfer limitations.

A damaged display is different from a phone that will not power on. If the phone is running but you cannot see its screen, a compatible HDMI adapter may let you view it on a TV or monitor. Whether this works depends on the specific Galaxy model and its video-output support.
Samsung Service Korea documents a particular setup for supported devices: Android 12 or later, DisplayPort support, a USB-C HDMI hub with USB-A ports, an external display, an HDMI cable, and wired mouse and keyboard. Once the display works and you can unlock the phone, you can use Smart Switch to transfer data. That setup is not universal; check compatibility for your exact model before buying or connecting a hub. Samsung Service Korea’s support solutions describe the damaged-screen procedure.
If touch input is broken and you cannot unlock the phone
A USB mouse or keyboard connected through a compatible adapter may let you operate a phone whose touchscreen no longer responds. You still need a way to see the display and enter the passcode or otherwise unlock the phone. If the display is also unusable, the external-display setup above may help only if the model supports it.

Samsung’s Korea instructions specify a wired mouse and keyboard with the supported hub arrangement. They do not establish that every Galaxy model accepts every adapter or that external input can bypass a lock. The goal is to operate the phone normally, unlock it, and then copy or transfer the photos—not circumvent its security. See Samsung Service Korea’s damaged-screen instructions for the model and software conditions it documents.
If the phone has a removable SD card
Power the phone off if possible, remove the SD card, and read it with a computer’s card slot or a card reader. Copy the photos and other files stored on the card to the computer. This recovers only files saved to that card; pictures stored in the phone’s internal memory will not appear on it. Samsung’s data-access guidance also identifies removable storage as a separate recovery route.

Samsung’s remote-backup route is not a way to switch on backup after the phone has failed. It requires that the phone remain powered and connected to the internet, be signed in to a Samsung account, and already have remote controls enabled. You also need the account credentials. If those conditions are met, selected data can be backed up to Samsung Cloud. If they were not enabled beforehand, remote backup is not an available workaround for an inaccessible phone. Samsung’s instructions list the prerequisites.
If the phone will not turn on
Check cloud and computer backups first, and remove an SD card if the device has one. If there is no copy and the phone remains unpowered, the reviewed Samsung guidance does not establish a universal method for extracting its internal photos. Samsung says a smashed phone that will not turn on may need repair; whether the original data can be recovered depends on the hardware diagnosis.
Before authorizing work, tell the repair provider that preserving the photos is important. Ask whether the proposed repair could reset the phone, replace its board, or otherwise affect the original storage. Samsung Service Korea says its service centers do not provide data-transfer service, so clarify the provider’s data-preservation policy rather than assuming a repair includes copying files. Samsung UK Support discusses repair for a phone that will not power on; Samsung Service Korea describes its service-center limitation.
