Broadcom’s AI Semiconductor Revenue Grew 221% in Q3 FY2026. What That Says About Custom Chips—and GPUs

Broadcom’s AI semiconductor revenue rose 221% year over year to $16.7 billion in Q3 FY2026. That is a striking result, but it is not a 221% increase in all Broadcom revenue, nor does it prove custom AI chips are already a bigger business than GPUs. It does show how quickly demand for custom accelerators and AI networking is growing at one major supplier.

What Broadcom’s 221% figure measures

The figure applies to Broadcom’s AI semiconductor revenue for Q3 FY2026, compared with the same quarter a year earlier. Broadcom reported $16.7 billion in that category, up 221% year over year and 54% sequentially. The company’s consolidated revenue for the quarter was $29.6 billion, so the AI semiconductor figure is a component of the broader business, not its total revenue growth. Broadcom’s Q3 FY2026 results release reports both figures.

“AI semiconductor revenue” is the company’s reported category. Broadcom’s CEO has attributed its growth to demand for custom AI accelerators and AI networking, but the releases do not disclose how much of the category came from each. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe the full $16.7 billion as custom-chip revenue.

How quickly the reported AI revenue has grown

Broadcom reported rising AI revenue and year-over-year growth across four consecutive fiscal quarters:

Fiscal quarter AI revenue reported by Broadcom Year-over-year growth
Q4 FY2025 Amount not stated in the cited release summary; see Broadcom’s Q4 FY2025 results release 74%
Q1 FY2026 $8.4 billion 106%
Q2 FY2026 $10.8 billion 143%
Q3 FY2026 $16.7 billion 221%

The reported dollar amounts for Q1 through Q3 come from Broadcom’s Q1, Q2, and Q3 FY2026 results releases. The table mixes year-over-year rates with quarter-specific revenue, so it shows the scale and pace of Broadcom’s reported business—not market share or a direct comparison with GPU sales.

Why custom accelerators and networking matter

Broadcom’s chief executive, Hock Tan, has pointed to demand for custom AI accelerators and AI networking as drivers of the company’s reported AI growth. In the Q2 FY2026 release, Tan said: “Q2 semiconductor revenue from AI of $10.8 billion grew 143% year-over-year, above our forecast, driven by increasing demand for custom AI accelerators and AI networking.” The Q2 release presents that as management’s explanation of its results.

Custom accelerators are designed for particular customers or workloads rather than sold as one general-purpose product for every buyer. AI systems also need high-speed networking to connect processors and move data. Broadcom’s statements place both kinds of demand in the growth story, but the releases do not provide a revenue split or enough detail to quantify the contribution of either one.

Could custom chips become a bigger business than GPUs?

Broadcom’s results make a case that custom AI accelerators and related networking are a rapidly expanding business for the company. They do not establish that custom chips as a whole will become larger than GPUs as a market. The cited releases report Broadcom’s own results and management’s account of demand; they do not offer a market-wide revenue comparison between custom accelerators and GPUs.

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5060

Nor do these figures settle which approach is faster, cheaper, more power-efficient, or more available across different workloads. A sound comparison would need evidence on those dimensions, as well as on software support and total system cost. A company-specific growth rate cannot answer them by itself.

How to read Broadcom’s guidance against actual results

Broadcom’s outlook is management guidance, not a reported result. After Q2 FY2026, the company said it expected Q3 AI semiconductor revenue of $16.0 billion. It later reported $16.7 billion for Q3. The first amount was a forecast; the second was the reported outcome. The Q2 release contains the guidance, and the Q3 release contains the result.
