Broadband Nutrition Labels: What the FCC’s “Broadband Facts” Shows

A broadband “nutrition label” is the FCC-required consumer disclosure for an internet service plan. The label, titled “Broadband Facts,” puts key terms such as price, fees, speeds, data allowance, and policy information in a standard format so shoppers can compare offers.

What is a broadband nutrition label?

It is a standardized disclosure about a broadband internet access plan—not a label attached to a modem, router, or other device. The FCC calls it a broadband consumer label; “nutrition label” is the familiar food-label analogy. The FCC says it borrowed that model to make basic information about internet service easier to understand. FCC consumer information explains the label, while the agency’s FCC 22-86 order describes the rationale.

Why does the FCC require the labels?

The FCC requires covered broadband providers to display consumer-friendly labels at the point of sale. The goal is to help consumers make informed choices by presenting plan details clearly and consistently. The agency announced the nationwide launch of the labels in its launch announcement.

Because prices and availability can vary by location, the useful label is the one for the specific plan offered at your address. It is a starting point for checking an offer, not a recommendation or guarantee that a plan meets your household’s needs.

How to use a broadband label when comparing plans

  1. Check that it matches the offer. Confirm the provider, plan or speed tier, and that the offer is available at your location.
  2. Read the price terms. Compare the monthly price with additional charges, discounts, bundles, and any terms that affect what you pay. Check whether a listed price changes after an introductory period.
  3. Compare performance and data. Look at download and upload speeds, latency information, and the included data allowance against how your household uses the internet.
  4. Open the policy links. Review the provider’s network-management and privacy information if those terms matter to your decision.
  5. Verify the complete offer. Use the label alongside the provider’s full terms before signing up; the label makes important details easier to scan but does not replace them.
