The Breville The Infuser BES840 is a semi-automatic espresso machine with adjustable PID temperature control, pre-infusion, a pressure gauge and manual milk steaming. Its feature set offers several ways to learn and adjust espresso preparation, but it also asks you to handle more of the workflow yourself. The key buying caveat is that Breville’s US product page marks the model discontinued, so availability, condition and price need to be checked at the time you shop.
What the BES840 offers
Breville describes the Infuser as a machine that begins extraction with low, steady pressure for pre-infusion, then increases pressure for the shot. The company says this is intended to encourage even extraction; it is a manufacturer explanation, not an independently verified result. Breville’s phrase that it “delivers optimal espresso flavor in every cup” is promotional language, not a measured performance claim.

The published US specifications and feature descriptions are listed on Breville’s BES840 product page. They describe the machine, not a guarantee of cup quality:
- Temperature: Digital PID control, adjustable in 4°F increments.
- Shot feedback and control: An extraction pressure gauge, single- and double-shot controls, and manual/volumetric shot control.
- Heating and pressure: A 1650 W thermocoil system, a 15 bar Italian pump and a 9 bar over-pressure valve. These component ratings do not establish the pressure or quality of an individual shot.
- Milk: A manual steam wand for texturing milk.
- Capacity and size: A 61 fl oz water tank; dimensions of 13.3 × 10.6 × 12.2 inches; listed weight of 17.42 lb (7.9 kg).
- Portafilter and power: A 54 mm portafilter and 110–120 V power.
- Warranty: One-year limited warranty, according to the US product page.
These are Breville’s published US specifications, accessed October 7, 2026. Check the regional version and full model suffix for the unit you are considering; specifications and support can vary by market.

How its controls shape the workflow
Temperature and pre-infusion
The adjustable PID gives you a stated way to change brew temperature in 4°F increments, while pre-infusion adds a low-pressure stage before extraction. Those controls may appeal if you want to experiment with preparation rather than rely only on a fixed automatic cycle. They do not, by themselves, ensure a better shot: results also depend on the coffee, grind, dose and technique.
Pressure gauge
The gauge is extraction feedback, not a direct measure of taste. It can help you observe what is happening during a shot, but Breville’s specification does not establish that a particular gauge reading means the espresso is properly extracted.

Shot volume
Breville lists single-shot, double-shot and manual/volumetric controls. Presets provide a simpler starting point; manual control gives you more direct involvement in deciding when to stop. Expect to learn how your dose and grind affect the result rather than treat a button selection as a complete recipe.

The steam wand leaves milk texturing to you. That gives you control over the process, but involves learning to position and move the wand to produce the texture you want. The available evidence does not establish a tested ease-of-use verdict, so whether this suits a beginner depends on their willingness to practice.

Is the Infuser suitable for a beginner?
It can suit a beginner who wants to learn the espresso workflow and is comfortable practicing dosing, tamping, shot adjustment and milk texturing. It is less suitable for someone seeking a mostly hands-off drink: the machine’s listed controls and manual steam wand make the user responsible for important parts of preparation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before choosing it, consider how you want to make drinks. If you mainly want straight espresso, manual milk skills may matter less. If you regularly make milk drinks, be prepared to learn the wand technique. In either case, a grinder is not listed among the included accessories, and the supplied baskets do not remove the need to dial in coffee.

What discontinuation means for buying one now
Breville’s US product page currently labels the BES840 discontinued. That means you should not assume Breville routinely sells new US units or that a particular listing represents current manufacturer stock. New-old-stock and used availability can change quickly; check the seller, machine condition, included accessories, return terms and any remaining warranty before buying. No current price or live stock check is established here, so a current-value verdict would be unreliable.
Breville’s BES840 parts listing includes maintenance supplies such as water filters, descaler and espresso-cleaning tablets, as well as machine parts including baskets, shower components, a portafilter assembly and seals. A listing does not guarantee that an item is currently in stock. Confirm the part number against the regional model suffix before ordering; a 54 mm diameter alone does not prove that an accessory fits.
How to compare it with another espresso machine
A fair comparison—whether with a Bambino Plus or another machine—needs current information about both products and listings. Compare the following before deciding:

Breville’s specifications explain what the BES840 is designed to offer, but they do not establish that it outperforms competing machines. The available CHOICE review page confirms coverage of the BES840 but does not provide detailed test findings here. CoffeeGeek published an article dated September 22, 2025, but the available information does not establish it as a hands-on comparative test. Neither supports assigning a verified comparative rating or current-price verdict.
