The Breville Nespresso Vertuo Plus BNV420 is a discontinued Australian-market Vertuo machine that brews four listed cup sizes from Vertuo capsules. It offers one-touch brewing and capsule recognition, but it does not use every Nespresso capsule type, and its tank capacity varies by configuration. Whether it is a sensible buy now depends on the condition and terms of the specific unit, local Vertuo capsule availability, and whether you are comfortable maintaining an older machine.
What the BNV420 is—and its current status
Breville identifies the BNV420 as a Vertuo Plus model and marks it discontinued on its Australian product page. That establishes its status in that market, not whether a particular retailer or secondhand seller has a unit available. Current stock, price, warranty and repair terms were not established, so check them directly with the seller before buying.

Breville describes the machine as using Centrifusion: it spins a capsule at up to 7,000 rotations per minute, while reading the capsule code to select brewing parameters. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent evidence that the coffee tastes better than coffee from another machine.

Breville lists four Australian pour formats for the BNV420:
#1 Best Overall
- SINGLE SERVE COFFEE and ESPRESSO MACHINE: Single serve coffee or espresso at the touch of a button. Innovative programs and features such as 25 sec heat up and energy saving automatic shut off..Note: 1)Too coarse a grind, too little coffee, or insufficiently tamping the grounds before brewing can all lead to inadequate pressure for a proper brew. 2)It is important to note that the amount of espresso extracted will vary depending on the grind size and amount and reprogramming may be needed when the size and amount are adjusted
- COFFEE FOR EVERY OCCASION: Brew better coffee at home with Nespresso's coffee espresso machine. Drink your coffee bold, mild hot, or iced.
- VERSATILE COFFEE MAKER: Brew 4 different cup sizes at the touch of a button (5oz and 8oz coffee, single and double espresso). Pour over ice to create your favorite blend of iced coffee and lattes.
- AEROCCINO MILK FROTHER INCLUDED: The Nespresso Aeroccino3 provides smooth hot or cold milk froth for your coffee recipes in a few seconds with one touch.
- COMPLIMENTARY GIFT: Each machine includes a complimentary starter set of Nespresso capsules (capsule assortment may vary from picture).
| Format | Listed volume |
|---|---|
| Espresso | 40 ml |
| Gran Lungo | 148 ml |
| Mug | 237 ml |
| Alto | 414 ml |
The machine reads the capsule and uses its code to choose brewing parameters. Breville also lists a motorised head that opens and closes, automatic capsule ejection and automatic off. These features make the process straightforward, but they do not eliminate routine cleaning or the need to buy compatible capsules.
Breville lists a tasting box of Vertuoline capsules as an included accessory on its product page. Treat that as a listing detail to verify rather than a guarantee: bundle contents can differ for a used machine or an individual seller’s offer.

Which capsules fit the BNV420?
The BNV420 is part of Nespresso’s Vertuo system. Buy capsules whose packaging explicitly says Vertuo, and check that the capsule range is available where you live. The available sources do not establish that Original-line capsules fit; do not assume that a capsule labelled only for another Nespresso system will work.

Because capsules are the machine’s recurring consumable, local selection and per-cup cost matter as much as the purchase price. Current capsule pricing and a complete picture of local availability were not established, so check both before committing to a discontinued machine.

Will it fit, and how large is the water tank?
Breville lists dimensions of 14.2 × 42.3 × 32.5 cm. Independent Australian consumer group CHOICE lists 32 × 14 × 42 cm, a weight of 4.4 kg and a 1.7 L reservoir for its BNV420 entry. Nespresso’s Vertuo Plus manual gives tank capacities of 1.2 L or 1.8 L depending on configuration, with dimensions that vary according to tank orientation. These figures should not be treated as interchangeable specifications for every BNV420.
Before buying, identify the precise model and configuration, check which way the tank sits, and measure your counter space—including room to open the head and remove the tank. For a used unit, inspect the reservoir and its fittings as well as the machine itself.

- SINGLE SERVE COFFEE & ESPRESSO MACHINE: Single serve coffee or espresso at the touch of a button. Innovative programs and features such as 25 sec heat up & energy saving automatic shut off.
- COFFEE FOR EVERY OCCASION: Brew better coffee at home with Nespresso's coffee espresso machine! Drink your coffee bold, mild hot, or iced.

Cleaning and descaling
Nespresso advises regularly refilling and cleaning the removable water tank, and emptying and rinsing the used-capsule container and drip tray. Its guidance is to descale a Vertuo Plus every 6 to 12 months. Follow the instructions for the specific machine and use a descaler confirmed as compatible with Vertuo machines.
Milk drinks and accessories
The BNV420 brews coffee; the available product information does not describe it as a milk steamer or built-in frother. Nespresso suggests pairing it with an Aeroccino3 to prepare hot or cold frothed milk. That is an optional, separate accessory—not a requirement for brewing coffee. If milk drinks are central to your routine, include the cost and counter space of a separate frother in your comparison.

Is a discontinued BNV420 worth buying?
It may suit someone who wants Vertuo brewing and the four listed pour sizes, and who can verify that compatible capsules are easy to obtain locally. The convenience of capsule recognition and one-touch operation should be weighed against the ongoing capsule constraint and the uncertainty that comes with buying a discontinued product.
Compare the exact unit with alternatives on capsule system and local capsule cost, cup sizes, reservoir capacity and placement, footprint, cleaning and descaling, milk-frothing needs, and the seller’s current warranty and repair arrangements. The available evidence does not support a ranked alternative recommendation or claims about the BNV420’s taste, noise, reliability or lifespan.
