Short answer: The Barista Express is the hands-on starting point: you grind, dose, tamp and texture milk yourself. The Barista Touch keeps the portafilter workflow but adds a touchscreen, saved recipes and automatic milk texturing. The Barista Pro (BES878) belongs between those two in Breville’s range, but its detailed specifications should be checked on the product page for your market. The Oracle Jet automates grinding, dosing, tamping and milk texturing, while the Oracle Touch (BES990) offers similar automation but is discontinued.
Your best choice depends less on a single “best” machine than on how much barista work you want to do, how often you make milk drinks, which voltage your kitchen uses and whether the price and warranty apply in your country.

What is the practical difference between Express, Pro, Touch and Oracle?
These machines share an espresso-machine format with an integrated grinder, but they automate different parts of the routine. On a Barista Express, the normal sequence is grind into the portafilter, distribute and tamp the coffee, start extraction, then steam and texture milk manually. It gives you direct control, but every drink depends on your technique.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Barista Touch uses the same general portafilter approach rather than behaving like a fully automatic bean-to-cup machine. You still handle the portafilter and coffee puck, yet its touchscreen guides drink selection and its wand can texture milk automatically. You can save customized drinks, making repeated orders more consistent and reducing the learning curve for other users.
#1 Best Overall
- MANUAL HAND-TEXTURED MICROFOAM: The powerful steam wand on this cappuccino maker and latte machine is designed to quickly turn milk into smooth, flavorful microfoam for creating latte art at home
- PRECISE DOSE GRINDING: Integrated precision conical burr grinder on bean-to-cup espresso machine grinds on demand to deliver correct amount of freshly ground coffee directly into portafilter for your preferred taste with any roast of bean
- WATER PRESSURE: Low pressure pre-infusion gradually increases pressure at the start and draws out all the flavors evenly during the extraction for a balanced-tasting espresso, latte or cappuccino
- RECEIVE 2 FREE BAGS OF SPECIALTY COFFEE: Included when you purchase and register any Breville coffee machine; T&Cs apply
- PRECISE ESPRESSO EXTRACTION: Digital temperature regulation (PID) delivers water at precisely the right temperature, so espresso coffee maker allows for precise espresso extraction
The Oracle family moves further toward automation. Oracle Jet can grind, dose and tamp automatically, then texture milk automatically. Oracle Touch also automates those stages and uses dual boilers so brewing and steaming can occur at the same time, but Breville marks that model discontinued. A discontinued machine can still make sense as remaining stock or a used purchase, but availability, warranty and repair support need to be verified before paying a premium.

Barista Express (BES870): the hands-on baseline
The Barista Express is the clearest choice if you want to learn and control the traditional home-barista routine without moving to a separate grinder and espresso machine. Breville’s US comparison lists an integrated steel conical-burr grinder with 16 grind settings, a 54 mm portafilter, a pressure gauge, a 2-liter water tank and a 250-gram hopper.
What you do for every drink
- Choose a grind setting and grind into the portafilter.
- Distribute the grounds and tamp them manually.
- Lock in the portafilter, start the shot and use the pressure gauge as feedback while adjusting your grind or dose.
- Steam and texture milk yourself when making a cappuccino, latte or similar drink.
- Clean the portafilter and steam wand after use.
This workflow is not a defect; it is the reason many buyers choose the Express. You can change the grind, dose and tamp pressure directly and develop skills over time. The trade-off is that consistency depends on your measurements and technique, and milk texturing takes practice.
Capacity and price snapshot
The cited US comparison displayed the Barista Express at $699.95 before a promotion. That is a displayed product-page price, not a guaranteed current price or a universal price for every country. The same model is listed in Australia with a 220–240-volt specification, a 2-liter tank, a 250-gram hopper and a price of AUD $719. The Australian listing includes a two-year repair warranty, while the cited US comparison identifies a one-year limited warranty. Those terms should not be transferred between markets.
Barista Pro (BES878): include it, but verify the exact variant
Breville’s support catalogue identifies the Barista Pro as BES878. An indexed comparison between the Touch and Pro exists, but the detailed page content available for this comparison did not establish a complete, model-specific specification set. That means claims about its heating time, number of grinder settings, tank size, portafilter details or automation should come from the local Breville product page or the manual for the exact suffix you plan to buy.
How to shop for the Pro responsibly
- Confirm that the model number is BES878 and record any regional suffix.
- Check whether the listing describes button controls or a screen, and whether it includes saved recipes.
- Verify the milk-steaming description rather than assuming it matches either Express or Touch.
- Check voltage, plug, warranty and included accessories on the local site.
The Pro can be a sensible middle option if you want a newer interface or faster day-to-day operation than the Express without paying for Oracle-level automation, but the available evidence does not support a precise feature-by-feature verdict. Treat retailer copy that supplies unverified numbers with caution.

- HOME ESPRESSO MACHINE WITH PRECISE EXTRACTION: Digital temperature regulation (PID) delivers water at precisely the right temperature, allowing for even espresso extraction
Barista Touch (BES880): touchscreen guidance and automatic milk texturing
The Barista Touch is aimed at households that want espresso-machine control without having every person learn a complete barista routine. Its touchscreen interface lets you select drinks and adjust settings, while the machine can texture milk hands-free and clean the wand automatically.

Controls and saved drinks
Breville’s US comparison lists five café favorites and eight customizable coffee settings. In practice, that means you can create named drink preferences instead of rebuilding the same recipe through button presses each morning. The interface is also easier to hand to a guest or another household member than a machine that exposes every decision through manual controls.
What remains manual
Automatic milk texturing does not make the Touch a fully automatic bean-to-cup appliance. The official comparison still describes a 54 mm portafilter and a removable manual tamper. You remain involved in preparing the coffee puck and fitting the portafilter. If you want a machine that handles the entire puck-preparation process, the Oracle models are the more relevant comparison.
Grinder and water capacity
The US listing specifies 30 grind settings and a 67-ounce water tank. Those figures are manufacturer specifications for that market; tank labeling and electrical details can differ elsewhere. The cited US page displayed $999.95 before a promotion. Check the current local price rather than treating that number as a standing retail price.
Who should pay more than Express pricing?
The Touch premium is easiest to justify when several people make milk drinks, when you want repeatable saved recipes, or when you do not want to learn manual steam-wand technique. If you mainly drink straight espresso and enjoy adjusting every variable yourself, the Express supplies the essential controls at a lower displayed US price. Neither conclusion is a taste test or a claim that one machine extracts objectively better.

Oracle Jet (BES985): the current high-automation comparison
Oracle Jet is the current higher-automation reference in the cited US comparison. It combines touch controls with automatic grinding, dosing and tamping, so the machine prepares the puck rather than asking you to perform those steps manually. It also provides automatic milk texturing.

| Oracle Jet specification | Manufacturer-listed figure |
|---|---|
| Grinder adjustments | 45 settings |
| Preset recipes | 13 |
| Custom drinks | More than 20 |
| Portafilter | 58 mm |
| Interface | Touch controls |
| Displayed US price | $1,999.95 before a promotion |
These are product-page specifications, not independent laboratory measurements. A larger 58 mm portafilter and more grinder adjustments describe the hardware; they do not by themselves prove better flavor. The value of the Jet is convenience and repeatability: fewer manual puck-preparation steps, automatic milk work and a broad recipe library.
When Jet automation matters
- You make several milk drinks in succession and want to reduce repetitive tamping and steaming.
- Different users need repeatable drinks without sharing the same barista technique.
- You prefer guided touchscreen preparation over learning a manual workflow.
If you enjoy weighing, distributing and tamping each shot, the Jet may remove the hands-on work you consider part of the hobby. Its displayed US price is also substantially above the Express and Touch snapshots, so convenience is the principal reason to consider it.
Oracle Touch (BES990): automated, but discontinued
Breville’s official US Oracle Touch page explicitly says, “This model has been discontinued.” Breville positions it as “Dual Boiler performance with simple touch screen automation.” Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent performance findings.

Because the model is discontinued, a buyer should evaluate the particular unit rather than relying only on the original feature list.
Checks for remaining stock or used units
- Ask whether the machine is new old stock, refurbished or previously used.
- Confirm that the seller provides a written warranty and that service is available in your country.
- Check the exact voltage and plug; do not assume a US machine can be used safely on a 220–240-volt circuit.
- Inspect the water system, steam wand, grinder and touchscreen for signs of wear.
- Confirm that replacement filters and cleaning supplies match BES990 rather than another Oracle or Barista model.
A discontinued Oracle Touch can be attractive if you specifically want its dual-boiler and touchscreen combination and find a supported unit at a sensible price. It is not the straightforward default for a new purchase because stock and after-sales support are less predictable.
Choose by workflow, not by the word “automatic”
| Your priority | Most relevant model direction | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Learn manual espresso and steam technique | Barista Express | Manual puck preparation, pressure feedback and manual milk texturing keep you involved. |
| Keep manual espresso control but simplify milk drinks | Barista Touch | It retains a portafilter workflow while adding hands-free milk texturing and saved recipes. |
| Consider a middle model | Barista Pro | Verify the local BES878 page before deciding; the complete feature set is not established by the available comparison. |
| Automate puck preparation and milk | Oracle Jet | It automatically grinds, doses, tamps and textures milk, with touchscreen recipes. |
| Want Oracle Touch specifically | Oracle Touch only if condition and support check out | It has the desired automation and dual boilers, but Breville marks it discontinued. |
Regional voltage, warranty and price checks
Do not compare a US and Australian listing as though they were the same package. The cited US comparison uses 110–120 volts and US-dollar pricing; the Australian comparison uses 220–240 volts and Australian-dollar pricing. A machine designed for one voltage range may be unsafe or unusable on another without equipment specifically approved for the purpose.

Warranty language also varies. The Australian comparison lists a two-year repair warranty for the Oracle Touch/Express comparison, while the US comparison identifies a one-year limited warranty for the Express. Confirm the warranty issuer, coverage, repair process and eligible country in the terms attached to your purchase.

Prices such as $699.95, $999.95 and $1,999.95 were displayed before promotions on a US comparison page. Promotions end, regional pricing differs and retailers may sell different bundles or conditions. Record the date you checked the price and verify stock immediately before ordering.
Accessories, water and maintenance
Accessory compatibility is model-specific. Portafilter dimensions, water-filter shapes and cleaning instructions should be checked against the exact model number, not just the family name. The Oracle Touch manual recommends replacing its water filter after three months or 10.6 US gallons (40 liters) and warns against distilled water. That instruction belongs to the Oracle Touch manual; do not apply it automatically to every Barista machine.
For any model, plan for routine puck cleanup, steam-wand wiping and the manufacturer’s cleaning cycle. Automatic wand cleaning on the Touch reduces one task, but it does not eliminate general maintenance. A used or discontinued Oracle deserves particular attention to filter history and cleaning records because neglected water systems can affect reliability.
A buying checklist
- Identify the exact model number. Express is BES870, Pro is BES878, Touch is BES880, Express Impress is BES876, Touch Impress is BES881, Oracle Jet is BES985 and Oracle Touch is BES990 in Breville’s US support catalogue.
- Match voltage and plug. Use the specification for your country, not a photograph or an overseas listing.
- Decide which steps you want automated. Separate milk automation from automatic grinding, dosing and tamping; they are different capabilities.
- Count the drinks and users. Saved recipes and hands-free texturing matter more in a multi-user, milk-drink household than for a solo espresso drinker.
- Compare the local price and warranty. Treat displayed prices as snapshots and read the local warranty terms.
- Check service and consumables. This is essential for the discontinued Oracle Touch and for any imported machine.
- Confirm the bundle. Filters, tampers and cleaning supplies can differ; buy only accessories listed for your exact model.
Bottom line: which one should you buy?
Choose the Barista Express if you want the least expensive route in this comparison to an integrated grinder and are willing to learn manual tamping and milk texturing. Choose the Barista Touch if a touchscreen, saved drinks, automatic milk texturing and automatic wand cleaning are worth paying more for while keeping a portafilter-based routine. Consider the Barista Pro only after verifying its local specification page, because the available evidence does not support filling in its missing details by assumption. Choose the Oracle Jet when automatic grinding, dosing, tamping and milk texturing are the priority. Treat the Oracle Touch as a discontinued, condition-and-support-dependent purchase rather than a normal current-model recommendation.
