Neither setup is universally better. A Breville Barista Express BES870 integrates a conical-burr grinder and espresso machine in one workflow, while a separate setup such as the Bambino Plus paired with a Baratza Encore ESP lets you choose two individual components. The right choice depends on how you value workflow, counter layout, model-specific features, price, service arrangements and the ability to change either component later.
Official Breville materials document how these products work, but they do not provide an independent, controlled taste or reliability test. Treat the comparison below as a buying and setup framework, not proof that one arrangement always makes better espresso.

The integrated Barista Express BES870 is the simpler physical arrangement: the grinder is built into the espresso machine, and the machine can grind directly into the portafilter. Breville documents adjustable grind size, adjustable grind amount, automatic single- or double-dose selection and hands-free grinding. You buy, position and learn one appliance.
A separate arrangement has two products to select and position. Breville’s U.S. comparison page names the Bambino Plus espresso machine with a Baratza Encore ESP grinder as an example. That is evidence that the combination is an offered product pairing, not evidence that every separate grinder and machine combination is superior.

For taste, the available official sources do not establish a universal winner. Breville’s manual explains that grind size changes the rate at which water flows through the basket and changes espresso taste; it tells users to adjust the setting and grind amount as needed. The useful question is therefore not “Which category always tastes better?” but “Which exact models give me the controls, workflow and ownership arrangement I actually want?”
What the two arrangements actually include
Integrated: Barista Express BES870
The BES870 combines the brewing system and grinder in a single machine. Its U.S. instruction manual identifies these grinder functions:
- an integrated conical-burr grinder;
- adjustable grind size;
- adjustable grind amount;
- automatic selection for a single or double dose; and
- hands-free grinding directly into the portafilter.
The same manual lists espresso-machine functions including PID temperature control, a thermocoil heating system, low-pressure pre-infusion, a pressure gauge, preset or programmable shot volumes, a steam wand and a dedicated hot-water outlet. These are documented capabilities, not independent measurements of extraction quality.
Separate: Bambino Plus plus Encore ESP example
Breville’s U.S. comparison page identifies a Bambino Plus paired with a Baratza Encore ESP. In this arrangement, the grinder and espresso machine are distinct products: the grinder prepares the coffee, and the Bambino Plus brews it. The page establishes the named pairing; it does not establish a universal rule about all separate-component systems.
Because the products are separate, you must evaluate the exact grinder, the exact machine and the way their controls fit your routine. Confirm the model generation, electrical version, dimensions, warranty and local availability before ordering. A product name that appears on a U.S. page may not have identical specifications, packaging or support in another market.

Workflow: what you do for each shot
Integrated workflow
- Fill the grinder hopper according to the machine’s instructions and select the filter size or dose option you intend to use.
- Set a starting grind size and grind amount. The manual recommends beginning with a suggested setting, then changing it as required.
- Position the portafilter under the grinder. The BES870 can grind hands-free into the portafilter.
- Prepare the coffee in the portafilter, lock it into the group head and run the shot using the machine’s preset or programmable volume.
- Use the steam wand for milk drinks or the dedicated hot-water outlet when that function is appropriate.
The main attraction is continuity: grinding and brewing happen at one station, and the machine’s dosing controls are designed around its portafilter. The trade-off is that the grinder is tied to the machine model. Any decision about grinder capability, service or replacement applies to that integrated design rather than to an independently selected grinder.
Separate-component workflow
- Place the grinder and espresso machine so that the grinder can dispense into the portafilter or an appropriate dosing container without obstructing the machine’s water, steam or service access.
- Set the grinder’s adjustment controls and grind the amount required for the shot.
- Transfer and prepare the grounds in the portafilter, then lock it into the Bambino Plus or the exact espresso machine you selected.
- Run the shot using the machine’s controls, and steam milk separately when needed.
- Keep the grinder’s setting consistent while you assess the result; change one variable at a time so you can tell whether a grind adjustment or a dose adjustment produced the change.
This arrangement adds a handoff between grinder and machine, but it also lets you investigate each component independently. Whether that flexibility is valuable depends on your priorities and on the service and compatibility terms for the exact products.

Espresso preparation requires adjustment because grind size influences water flow through the basket and the resulting taste. Breville’s BES870 manual explicitly instructs users to start with a suggested setting and adjust grind size and amount as necessary. The implication for either arrangement is practical: a machine cannot compensate for every coffee, roast, dose or preference with one permanent setting.
A repeatable adjustment method
- Begin with the manufacturer’s suggested grind setting for the basket and dose you selected.
- Prepare a shot without changing several controls at once.
- Observe the flow and taste. If the result does not match your preference, alter the grind size or grind amount in a small step.
- Prepare another shot and record what changed.
- Repeat until the setting suits that coffee and your preferred flavor.
On the BES870, the integrated controls put grind size and grind amount beside the brewing workflow. With a separate grinder, those adjustments are made on the Encore ESP or whichever grinder you choose, while the espresso machine remains a separate control surface. Neither arrangement removes the need to learn how your coffee responds.

Counter space and daily ergonomics
An integrated machine presents one appliance to position, but you still need room above and around it for the hopper, water access, portafilter handling, steam-wand movement and cleaning. Do not infer its footprint from the product category; measure the exact BES870 version sold in your region.

A separate setup needs space for both the grinder and machine, plus a workable path between them. Two components can be arranged to suit your counter, but they also create two sets of switches, containers and access points. Compare actual width, depth, height and clearance requirements rather than assuming that “one appliance” or “two appliances” automatically wins.

- Can you open the hopper or fill the water reservoir without moving another appliance?
- Is there enough clearance to insert and remove the portafilter safely?
- Can the steam wand move without striking a wall, cabinet or backsplash?
- Will the grinder’s grounds path line up comfortably with your portafilter?
- Where will you place a scale, tamper, knock box and cleaning supplies?
Price, warranty and service: compare the complete purchase
Prices and availability change by country, seller and date. The cited materials do not establish a current universal price for either arrangement, and they do not verify current marketplace listings. Compare the exact integrated model’s current price with the combined current prices of the exact grinder and espresso machine, including any required accessories, delivery charges and taxes applicable in your market.
Warranty and service should be evaluated at the component level. An integrated purchase gives you one product relationship to check. A separate purchase gives you two product warranties, two support channels and potentially different regional terms. That does not prove that one arrangement is easier or cheaper to repair; it means you should read the terms for the models and seller you are considering.
A price-and-support checklist
- Write down the full model number, not only the family name.
- Check the voltage and plug specification for your country.
- Record the current price of the integrated machine from an authorized local source.
- Record the current prices of the Bambino Plus and Encore ESP, or the exact alternatives you are comparing.
- Compare what is included: baskets, portafilter, hopper, water accessories and cleaning tools.

- The exact Bambino Plus and Encore ESP combination fits your local availability and budget after a current-price check.
These are decision criteria, not promises that one configuration will last longer, cost less to repair or produce better espresso. Those outcomes depend on the exact models, use and support available in your market.

Common mistakes when comparing the setups
Assuming “separate” automatically means better espresso
The official sources do not include a controlled taste comparison. A separate grinder may be attractive for its component choice, but the category label alone cannot establish a better cup.
Assuming the integrated grinder needs no dialing in
The BES870 manual specifically explains that grind size affects flow and taste and tells users to adjust it. Integrated dosing makes the workflow coherent; it does not remove adjustment.
Comparing a family name instead of a model number
Regional pages can describe related products differently. Use the full model number, confirm the generation and check local voltage, dimensions, price and warranty before treating a specification as applicable to your purchase.
Using a regional comparison as a global price list
The Canadian Barista Express-versus-Bambino page supports the distinction between an integrated grinder and a machine with no integrated grinder. It should not be used to generalize Canadian prices or warranty terms to another country.

What the manufacturer claim does—and does not—tell you
Breville’s BES870 manual says: Precision conical burrs maximize ground coffee surface area for a full espresso flavor.
That sentence is Breville’s product copy. It describes the company’s claimed design intent; it is not an independent taste test or proof that every user will prefer the resulting espresso.
The same evidence boundary applies to the listed PID control, thermocoil system, pre-infusion, pressure gauge, programmable volumes and other features. Specifications tell you what the manufacturer documents. They do not, by themselves, establish comparative flavor, reliability, lifespan, repair cost or value.
A practical buying procedure
- Define your routine. Decide whether you want one combined station or are comfortable operating two appliances for every shot.
- Choose exact candidates. Use the Barista Express BES870 as the integrated example, or compare the Bambino Plus and Encore ESP as the separate example identified by Breville.
- Verify regional details. Check model number, voltage, dimensions, current price, availability, warranty and service in your country.
- Map the counter. Measure the available footprint and clearances, including room for the hopper, reservoir, portafilter and steam wand.
- Compare controls. Confirm grind-size and dose controls, shot-volume controls and the milk-steaming or hot-water functions you will actually use.
- Calculate the complete cost. Add both products and required accessories for the separate option; compare that total with the integrated machine under the same regional conditions.
- Plan your dialing-in process. Reserve time to adjust grind size and amount for your coffee rather than expecting the suggested starting setting to be permanent.

Bottom line for the two examples
The Barista Express BES870 is the more unified choice: its documented integrated grinder, automatic dosing options and hands-free portafilter workflow keep preparation in one appliance. The Bambino Plus with Encore ESP is the clearly identified separate-component choice: two products, two sets of specifications and a need to compare their combined local cost, space and support.
