The Breville Combi Wave 3 in 1 makes the most sense if you will regularly use its air-fry and convection functions as well as its microwave. It combines useful cooking modes with accessible controls, but occupies substantial counter space—and an independent lab review found microwave heating slower than expected for the advertised output. If you mainly reheat and defrost, a dedicated microwave may be a better fit.
What the Combi Wave does
The BMO870 combines an inverter microwave, convection oven, and air fryer. Breville also lists grill cooking, Fast Combi and Cook from Frozen programs, shortcut controls, and 19 built-in smart presets on its US product page. Breville describes Element iQ and Power Smoothing inverter technology as part of the appliance’s cooking system; those are manufacturer feature claims, not independent performance findings. The appeal is versatility in one appliance, not a guarantee that it will match three separate devices in every task. Whether that tradeoff works depends on which modes you actually use and whether the unit’s footprint suits your kitchen.

RTINGS’ review, published September 24, 2026, found the controls easy to use and the appliance quiet, but its heating was slower than expected for the advertised 1100W microwave output. In RTINGS’ testing, the Combi Wave heated at a measured rate of 586W at 100% power and averaged 45.7 dBA at 100% power. These are RTINGS test results, not manufacturer ratings, and should not be confused with the microwave’s electrical input rating.

Air frying, convection, and combined cooking
The Combi Wave’s key differentiator from a conventional microwave is that it adds air-fry, convection, grill, and combination programs. Breville says the appliance combines those functions for a range of cooking occasions. The available evidence establishes those modes and controls, but does not provide a comparative test showing that its air-fry results equal those of a dedicated air fryer or that its oven performance replaces a full-size oven.

Consider the combined modes valuable if you expect to use them for everyday meals, not merely as occasional extras. If your routine is mostly reheating, defrosting, and simple microwave cooking, the additional functions may not justify the larger body.

Footprint, capacity, and regional model differences
The US listing is for model BMO870BSS1BUC1. It states a capacity of 1.1 cu. ft. (32L) and dimensions of 20.5 × 20.1 × 12.6 inches. RTINGS also notes that the chamber feels small relative to the counter space the appliance occupies. Check the space where you plan to install it, including the room needed to open the door and use the controls.

Breville lists a Combi Crisp Pan and trivet as included accessories for the US product. The Australian listing also lists a Combi Crisp Pan and trivet. Breville’s regional listings may offer the pan separately as an accessory, so confirm the box contents for the model and retailer you are considering. - Consider it if you have room for a large countertop appliance and expect to use microwave, air-fry, and convection functions often enough to value having them together.
- Look elsewhere if fast microwave heating and a larger chamber in a smaller body matter more than additional cooking modes. RTINGS identifies Breville’s Smooth Wave as a more compact, faster-heating option with a larger chamber for readers chiefly seeking a microwave; that comparison is specific to RTINGS’ review and should not be taken as a universal regional or price comparison.
- Measure and verify first if counter space, electrical compatibility, warranty, or accessory fit is a close call. Match the model suffix to the product page for your country.
The main purchase question is whether the cooking modes will earn their counter space. The Combi Wave offers more flexibility than a microwave alone, but its footprint and the independent finding on microwave heating speed make it less compelling for households that primarily reheat food.
