This is a semi-automatic, hands-on espresso workflow rather than a one-touch milk-drink machine. You grind into the portafilter, prepare and extract the shot, and texture milk yourself. Breville lists manual milk texturing and a portafilter workflow, so buyers who want the machine to automatically prepare and finish a milk drink should look at a different category.

Heating and espresso controls
Breville says the ThermoJet reaches optimum extraction temperature in three seconds. Treat this as the company’s stated heat-up claim, not a guarantee that a complete drink is ready in three seconds or an independent measurement. The US instruction manual also describes PID temperature control, low-pressure pre-infusion, programmable volumetric controls and adjustable shot temperature. Grinding and milk
The integrated grinder lets you adjust grind size and amount as part of the espresso workflow. The manual describes hands-free grinding and a removable burr set. After extraction, the steam wand requires you to texture milk manually; this gives you control but also means learning the technique and cleaning the wand after use.

Barista Pro vs. Barista Express
The Barista Express BES870 is the most relevant alternative if you want an integrated grinder and manual espresso preparation. A comparison published September 29, 2026 describes the Pro’s differences as faster ThermoJet heating, 30 rather than 16 grind settings, and an LCD in place of the Express’s analog pressure gauge. The Pro makes the clearest case if reduced waiting, finer choice among the listed grind settings, or a screen-based workflow matter to you. The Express may be the better value if those conveniences do not matter enough to justify the price difference where you live. The LCD and gauge also present different kinds of feedback: choose a screen and its workflow if that suits you, or a visible analog gauge if you prefer that style. The available comparison does not establish that one machine consistently makes better espresso.

Maintenance and ownership
Breville’s US manual recommends replacing the water filter after two months. It also advises filling the tank with fresh, cold tap water before use and cautions against highly filtered, demineralized or distilled water because it may affect coffee taste. The included NZ cleaning kit covers some maintenance needs from the outset. Replacement filters are a recurring consideration; confirm compatibility with the exact machine and follow the current regional guidance. Optional 54 mm accessories or another milk pitcher are not essential to start, particularly when the NZ package listing already includes a dosing funnel and a 480 ml jug. For example, its US page lists 120 volts, 1680 watts, US dimensions and a two-year limited warranty for the US model BES878BSS1BUS1. Those specifications should not be transferred to the NZ model. Verify the live NZ listing for price, stock, warranty and bundle contents before purchase.
Breville’s US page also says the machine can use up to 32% less annual energy than a Thermoblock heating system, based on the company’s internal benchmark testing as of November 2022.
