Breville Barista Express vs. Barista Pro: Which Espresso Machine Should You Buy?

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Choose the Breville Barista Pro (BES878) if faster advertised startup, an LCD-guided interface and finer-grained grinder adjustment are worth its current price premium. Choose the Barista Express (BES870) if you prefer physical controls, an extraction-pressure gauge and a potentially lower live price. Both are semi-automatic machines with integrated conical-burr grinders, 54 mm portafilters, volumetric shot controls and manual steam wands. Neither is a one-touch milk-drink appliance, and Breville’s specifications do not establish a winner for espresso taste.

The sensible decision depends on your region, exact model suffix, current price difference and preferred workflow—not on the grinder-setting count alone.

The decision in one minute

The two machines perform the same basic job: grind whole beans, let you prepare and tamp a 54 mm puck, extract a programmed single or double shot, and texture milk yourself. The Pro changes the experience around that process. Its ThermoJet system is advertised by Breville as reaching extraction temperature in three seconds, and its LCD presents settings and prompts. The Express uses a Thermocoil system, button controls and a visible pressure gauge.

  • Buy the Pro when you make several drinks in a session, value a display-led setup, or dislike waiting for the machine to become ready.
  • Buy the Express when a simpler button layout and pressure feedback matter more than guided menus, or when its live price is meaningfully lower.
  • Choose neither by default if you want automatic milk preparation; both require manual steaming and practice.

These recommendations apply to the US BES870 and BES878 versions unless a section says otherwise. Breville sells region-specific variants, so check voltage, included accessories and warranty terms for your country before ordering.

The shared-feature and setting counts come from Breville’s official comparison and product documentation: regional comparison, US BES870 page and US BES878 page.

Heating: the Pro is faster on paper, not proven faster in a comparative test

What Breville claims for the Pro

The Barista Pro manual says, “Innovative heating system achieves ideal extraction temperature in 3 seconds.” That is Breville’s manufacturer statement, not an independently measured comparison with the Express. The US product page also presents the Pro as a fast-heating espresso machine. Treat three seconds as an advertised readiness specification under Breville’s stated conditions, not as a guarantee that every kitchen, drink sequence or steam operation will take exactly that long. The wording appears in the 2023 US Barista Pro manual.

What the Express uses

The Express has a Thermocoil heating system with PID temperature control. The available official materials do not provide an independently verified, directly comparable startup time for the Express. It is therefore accurate to say the Pro has the headline startup advantage Breville advertises, not that it has been proven to heat a drink faster in all use.

How much the difference matters

If your morning routine begins with one drink and you already perform other preparation while the machine warms, the practical value may be small. If multiple people make drinks consecutively or you often start the machine immediately before extracting, shorter advertised readiness can be worth paying for. Neither specification predicts extraction quality by itself because dose, grind, distribution, tamping, water and milk technique still affect the result.

Controls and feedback: gauge versus screen

Express: direct physical feedback

The Express uses dedicated buttons and includes an extraction-pressure gauge. During a shot, the gauge gives you a visual indication of pressure, which can help diagnose a very fast or very restricted extraction while you adjust grind, dose or tamp. It does not automatically correct those variables, and a gauge reading alone cannot certify a good-tasting shot.

Pro: an LCD-led workflow

The Pro combines buttons with an LCD interface and customizable settings. A display can make initial setup and changing options easier to follow than a button-only panel, especially for a first-time owner who wants on-screen instructions. The Pro does not eliminate the need to learn puck preparation or milk texturing; the screen guides the machine settings, not your hand technique.

Which interface suits you?

  • Pick the Express interface if you want fewer menu decisions, prefer tactile controls or expect to use pressure feedback while dialing in coffee.
  • Pick the Pro interface if you value guided prompts, want to see settings at a glance or share the machine with people who appreciate a more explicit display.
  • Do not treat the presence of a display as evidence of superior espresso. It is a usability difference.

Grinder adjustment: 16 versus 30 positions

Breville lists 16 grinder settings for the BES870 and 30 for the BES878. More positions can make it easier to make small changes between a shot that runs too quickly and one that runs too slowly, but the number is only a count of adjustment positions. It does not establish finer burr geometry, greater consistency, longer life or better cup quality.

Both machines use integrated conical burr grinders. You still need to select a suitable setting for your beans, dose consistently, distribute grounds in the basket and tamp evenly. Coffee freshness, roast level and humidity can require a new setting even when you use the same number on the dial. The official manuals and product pages list the settings but do not provide independent grinder-performance measurements; see the 2022 Express manual and 2023 Pro manual.

What using either machine actually involves

Both models are semi-automatic. Expect a repeatable sequence rather than a push-button latte.

  1. Prepare water and beans. Fill the water reservoir according to the regional manual and place fresh whole beans in the hopper. Verify that the machine is on a stable surface with room to operate the portafilter and steam wand.
  2. Select a starting grind setting. Use the grinder dial and begin with the setting recommended in the manual or by your coffee roaster. The Express offers 16 listed positions; the Pro offers 30.
  3. Grind into the 54 mm portafilter. Keep the portafilter seated correctly and use the supplied dosing and trimming equipment if included with your regional package. Breville documentation lists a dosing funnel and dose-trimming tool, but included accessories can vary by market and bundle.
  4. Distribute and tamp. Level the grounds and tamp with consistent pressure so water meets an even coffee bed. The machine cannot compensate for a tilted or channeling puck.
  5. Lock in the portafilter and select the shot. Choose the single- or double-shot volumetric control. The Express lets you watch the pressure gauge during extraction; the Pro presents its settings through the LCD and buttons.
  6. Evaluate the result. If the shot is too fast, too slow or tastes unbalanced, change one variable at a time—usually grind size, dose or distribution—then repeat. Do not assume a different machine setting will fix stale beans or poor tamping.
  7. Steam milk manually. Purge and position the steam wand, introduce air at the surface, then texture the milk to the consistency required for your drink. Stop before overheating and wipe and purge the wand immediately after use.
  8. Clean the coffee path. Knock out the puck, rinse the portafilter and basket, wipe and purge the steam wand, and empty the drip tray as needed. Follow the machine’s cleaning, descaling and water-filter instructions for longer-term maintenance.

This workflow is why the machines suit buyers who want control, not people seeking automatic cappuccino preparation. A 54 mm dosing funnel or puck-preparation accessory can be useful, but verify that it fits the exact model and check what is already in your box before buying extras.

Milk drinks and beginner learning curve

Manual texturing is the shared skill

The Express and Pro both use manual milk texturing. You control wand position, air intake, temperature and pouring. That gives you the flexibility to make microfoam for a flat white or a larger foam volume for a cappuccino, but it also creates a learning curve. Neither machine measures milk temperature for you or automatically delivers a finished drink.

Which is friendlier for a first espresso setup?

The Pro’s LCD can make the first setup less cryptic because settings are displayed rather than communicated solely through button combinations. The Express’s pressure gauge can be more educational once you begin dialing in shots because it shows what happens during extraction. Beginners who want guided prompts may prefer the Pro; beginners who want to learn through direct mechanical feedback may prefer the Express. In either case, budget time for practice with grind adjustment, tamping and steaming.

Warranty, region and model checks

Breville’s US product pages list a one-year limited warranty for the BES870 and a two-year limited warranty for the BES878. Those terms are tied to the US listings and should not be generalized to every country. The Mexican comparison page is useful for cross-checking shared features, but its localized warranty and pricing should not be applied to US buyers.

Before checkout, confirm all of the following:

  • The model number is BES870 or BES878, or the exact regional equivalent you intended.
  • The voltage and plug match your country. Do not import a different-voltage machine based only on a lower price.
  • The warranty is valid in the country where you will use the machine and states who handles service.
  • The box includes the dosing funnel, trimming tool, baskets and water accessories you expect; bundles can differ.
  • The retailer’s return policy covers a machine that arrives damaged or has the wrong regional specification.

Price: compare the gap, not a headline number

The Pro page displayed $849.95 in the captured US listing, while the Express price must be checked on the live product page. Because espresso-machine pricing, stock and promotions change, do not treat either figure as an evergreen purchase price. Calculate the current difference after shipping, tax, retailer discounts and any included accessories.

Use this value test:

  • If the Pro costs only modestly more and you will use its LCD and faster advertised readiness daily, the convenience may justify the premium.
  • If the difference is large, the Express still provides the integrated grinder, PID-controlled brewing, volumetric shots, manual steaming and pressure gauge. Put the saved money toward fresh beans or essential puck-preparation tools rather than assuming the Pro will produce better coffee automatically.
  • If warranty length is a major factor, include the US pages’ two-year Pro versus one-year Express terms, then verify that your local warranty matches.

Energy-use claim: useful context, limited scope

Breville’s US Pro page reports up to 32% lower annual energy use versus a Thermoblock system, based on the company’s internal benchmark testing disclosed in November 2022. That is a narrow manufacturer comparison, not an independent household study and not a guarantee of your electricity savings. Daily drink count, standby behavior, ambient temperature and steaming frequency will affect actual consumption. Consider the figure supporting context for the Pro’s heating design, not a reason by itself to choose the machine.

What is—and is not—known about cup quality

The official specifications establish hardware and controls, but they do not provide independent comparative extraction data, taste scores, workflow timing, reliability statistics or grinder-performance measurements for the two machines. The 30-versus-16 setting count and ThermoJet-versus-Thermocoil distinction therefore cannot support a claim that one model makes better-tasting espresso.

In practice, coffee quality depends heavily on bean freshness, grind calibration, dose, puck preparation, water and the operator’s steaming and pouring technique. Two owners can obtain different results from identical machines. Buy the feature set that makes those variables easier for you to control, rather than paying for an assumed flavor advantage.

Maintenance and ownership basics

Routine care is similar because both machines combine a grinder, espresso group and steam system. After each session, remove and rinse the puck, rinse the basket and portafilter, wipe and purge the wand, and keep the drip tray from overflowing. Empty retained grounds and keep the grinder area dry.

For periodic care, use only cleaning tablets, descaler and water-filter procedures that the manual for your model and region specifies. Water hardness changes how often descaling is needed, so a fixed interval from another country or model may be inappropriate. The manuals explain the machine’s cleaning alerts and procedures; retain them rather than relying on a generic schedule.

Final buying recommendation

For most buyers, the Pro is the better fit only when its LCD workflow and Breville-advertised faster readiness solve a real daily inconvenience and the live regional price gap is acceptable. The Express is the stronger value when you want uncomplicated buttons, an extraction-pressure gauge or a lower price while keeping the same integrated-grinder, 54 mm-portafilter and manual-steaming concept.

Verify the exact BES870 or BES878 variant, voltage, included accessories, warranty and current price before ordering. Whichever you choose, expect to learn grind adjustment, puck preparation and milk texturing; those skills—not the specification sheet alone—will determine the quality in your cup.
