The Breville Bambino BES450 is a compact semi-automatic espresso machine for buyers who want quick startup and straightforward controls, and are willing to handle milk steaming themselves. Its US-listed footprint is 11.9 × 6.1 × 13.5 inches, but making espresso still takes hands-on work: you need a suitable grinder for fresh beans and must learn to texture milk with the steam wand. This review is based on Breville’s published specifications and manual, not hands-on testing.
What the Bambino BES450 does
The BES450 is a single-group home espresso machine with preset one- and two-cup volumetric controls, a steam control, and a hot-water control. Breville says its ThermoJet system reaches optimum extraction temperature in three seconds. That is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independently measured startup time. The company describes a low-pressure pre-infusion followed by extraction at 9 bar, delivered by a 15 bar pump.

The one- and two-cup buttons provide a simple starting point, but the machine is not limited to fixed factory volumes: the manual says shot volumes can be manually overridden or programmed. The hot-water function dispenses through the steam-wand outlet, according to the manual.

Breville’s US product page lists the following specifications for the BES450. Measurements and warranty details may differ by regional model, so check the page and terms for the market where you are buying.

These are manufacturer specifications, not measurements from an independent review. Before buying, measure the available counter space and the clearance needed to fill the water tank and work with the portafilter and steam wand; the listed dimensions do not account for how you will access the machine in your kitchen.

For the freshly ground beans Breville says the machine is intended to use, you will need an espresso-capable grinder unless you already own one. Grinder choice matters to the setup: a machine can brew only with the coffee you provide, and the BES450’s included accessories do not include a grinder. No particular grinder model is established here as a recommended match.

- Useful Tips: Please kindly note that do not brew coffee immediately after frothing milk. The machine must cool down first otherwise the temperature and the pressure inside the machine will be too high, and the machine will go into over-heating protection mode. Pre-ground coffee may be used with the dual-wall baskets, but it does not replace having a grinder if your aim is to grind fresh beans for each preparation. The single-wall baskets are another included option; follow the instructions for the basket and coffee you use. Before buying any additional 54 mm dosing or tamping accessory, verify compatibility with the specific product and confirm that it adds something you need beyond the included tamper.
Milk steaming is manual, not automatic
The BES450 requires you to operate the steam wand and control milk texture yourself. Expect to learn wand positioning and how to introduce and incorporate air into the milk. That hands-on step gives you control, but it is not a one-button milk program.

Breville distinguishes the Bambino Plus as the model with an automatic steam wand. If reducing milk-steaming work is a priority, compare the Plus’s features and current regional specifications with the BES450 rather than assuming the two models steam milk the same way.
Is the Bambino BES450 a good fit?
It makes sense if
- You have limited counter space and the US-listed dimensions fit your intended location.
- You want a semi-automatic machine with simple preset shot controls and the option to program shot volumes.
- You are comfortable learning manual milk texturing, or usually make drinks that do not require steamed milk.
- You have an espresso-capable grinder or have accounted for one in your setup budget.
Consider another setup if
- You want automatic milk texturing; Breville describes the Bambino Plus as having an automatic steam wand.
- You expect the machine alone to provide a complete fresh-bean espresso setup; it does not include a grinder.
- You need a different electrical specification or warranty coverage; the figures above are from Breville’s US product page.
Breville calls the Bambino “The faster way to professional results at home.” That is the company’s product-page headline, not an independent verdict on drink quality. The available specifications establish the machine’s size, controls, and stated operation, but do not establish that it produces better espresso or is more reliable than competing machines.

Verdict
The BES450 is a plausible compact entry point for a first semi-automatic setup if you want fast manufacturer-claimed heating, basic shot controls, and manual involvement—and you have a suitable grinder. Its most important trade-off is clear: milk steaming is hands-on, while the Bambino Plus is the Breville option identified with automatic steaming. Check the current price, regional warranty, and exact package contents before deciding, since those can vary.
