Choose Breez SDK when you are adding Bitcoin or stablecoin wallet and payment functions inside an application. Choose BTCPay Server when you need a self-hosted merchant processor for checkout, invoices and payment operations. They solve different layers of the stack: Breez supplies embeddable wallet/payment capabilities, while BTCPay runs the merchant-facing processor. A BTCPay plugin can also add Breez-powered Lightning, so the two products can be combined rather than treated as exclusive alternatives.

The decision in one minute

If your primary requirement is… Better starting point Why
An in-app wallet, Lightning address, invoice, LNURL-Pay flow, withdrawal, authentication or stablecoin feature Breez SDK It is designed to embed Bitcoin and stablecoin capabilities directly into an app or service.
Merchant checkout, invoices and payment management that your organization operates BTCPay Server It is self-hosted payment-processor software with commerce flows and a versioned API.
A processor that sends payments directly to your wallet without a hosted SaaS subscription BTCPay Server BTCPay says it charges no subscription or transaction fees; network, hosting and administration costs remain.
Wallet functionality without building a complete payment-server stack Breez SDK The SDK provides application-level capabilities, while your team chooses the surrounding app architecture.
BTCPay checkout with managed Lightning liquidity through Breez technology BTCPay plus its Breez Lightning plugin The documented plugin uses Breez SDK powered by Blockstream Greenlight, but it is explicitly labeled a beta release.

The important distinction is not “which product has more features.” It is where each product sits. Breez is an integration component inside your product. BTCPay is a payment processor that you deploy and operate for your business.

What Breez SDK provides

Breez describes its SDK as a way to add Bitcoin and stablecoin functionality to an app or service. Its product material lists Lightning addresses and invoices, LNURL-Pay, withdrawals, authentication and verification flows, multiple programming languages and frameworks, passkey login, stable balances, instant deposits, multi-device synchronization and signer options.

That feature set is aimed at a product team that owns the user experience. You can present a wallet balance beside the rest of your app, let a user pay an invoice without leaving your interface, or build a service that accepts Lightning and stablecoin payments as part of a larger workflow. The SDK is free and open source for developers, according to Breez. “Free” here describes the SDK license and availability; it does not establish that every payment route, liquidity service or on-chain operation has zero cost.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Where the SDK fits in an application

  • User interface: Your app supplies the screens, account model, notifications and business logic.
  • Payment functions: The SDK supplies the wallet and payment capabilities you select, such as invoices, Lightning addresses, LNURL-Pay or withdrawals.
  • Authentication: Passkey login and the listed authentication or verification functions can be used where they match your chosen SDK version and architecture.
  • State and devices: Multi-device synchronization and stable-balance features are available as product capabilities, but you must confirm their implementation details before committing to a data model.
  • Signing: Breez describes the SDK as non-custodial and lists signer options. Determine exactly where keys are created, stored and used in your implementation.

What Breez does not automatically solve

An SDK does not remove the need for product decisions. You still need to design account recovery, device loss handling, fraud controls, regulatory review, transaction-status handling, observability and support procedures. You also need to verify which assets and payment paths are supported by the specific SDK release you integrate. Breez’s current marketing page presents a broad capability set, but it is not a complete schedule of end-user fees or a substitute for the version-specific developer documentation.

What BTCPay Server provides

BTCPay Server is free, open-source, self-hosted payment-processor software. Its general FAQ describes the operating model plainly: “BTCPay Server is a self-hosted software. This means that you are your own payment processor.” Payments go directly to a merchant’s wallet, and BTCPay says it charges no subscription or transaction fees. Bitcoin network fees still apply.

BTCPay is therefore a deployment and operations choice as much as an integration choice. You run the server, secure it, keep it updated, back it up and monitor it. A virtual private server or other hosting arrangement can add recurring infrastructure cost even though the software license itself is free.

The documented base stack

BTCPay’s minimal setup documentation includes four core pieces:

  • BTCPay Server
  • NBXplorer
  • Bitcoin Core
  • PostgreSQL

For Lightning, BTCPay documents connections to Core Lightning and LND. Deployment options include guided services, Docker and manual installation. Guided deployment reduces setup friction; Docker and manual installation can provide more control over the environment, but increase the amount of infrastructure work your team must understand and maintain.

How application integrations connect

BTCPay integrations use its versioned Greenfield REST API. The integrating application needs the BTCPay instance URL, a store ID and a scoped API key. Endpoints depend on the target server version and any installed plugins, so your integration should pin and test against the version you operate rather than assuming every instance exposes the same surface.

This model works well when your application needs merchant invoices, payment status and checkout links while BTCPay remains the system that creates and tracks payment requests. It is a different boundary from embedding a wallet into each end user’s account.

How to evaluate Breez SDK for your app

1. Define the user action

Write down the exact action your user must complete: receive a Lightning payment, generate an invoice, pay another party, withdraw funds, use LNURL-Pay, hold a stable balance or authenticate with a payment identity. Select only the SDK capabilities that map to those actions. A wallet feature and a merchant checkout feature may share Lightning rails but have different screens, permissions and failure handling.

2. Confirm the SDK surface for your release

Choose the programming language or framework supported by your application and verify the current package, platform requirements and asset support in the Breez developer documentation. Marketing descriptions are useful for scope; the implementation contract comes from the release you will ship.

3. Decide where signing and recovery live

Document key generation, signer selection, backup or recovery, device replacement and account deactivation before building the payment screen. Non-custodial does not mean “no security work.” It means the custody boundary must be made explicit in your architecture and user support process.

4. Model asynchronous payment states

Invoices, Lightning payments, withdrawals and on-chain actions can move through pending, settled, failed or expired states. Your app should persist an internal transaction identifier, show the user a clear state, reconcile server notifications and provide a recovery path for interrupted sessions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Test the whole lifecycle

  • Create and pay an invoice in a controlled environment.
  • Exercise an expired or failed payment and verify that the UI does not show it as settled.
  • Test device synchronization and passkey or signer recovery on a second device.
  • Check how fees, exchange rates and stablecoin balances are displayed to users.
  • Confirm that support staff can identify a transaction without asking users to expose secret key material.

How to evaluate BTCPay Server for a merchant integration

1. Choose the operating model

Decide whether your team will run BTCPay on a VPS, on-premises host or another supported environment. Assign responsibility for operating-system updates, TLS, firewalling, backups, incident response and uptime. Self-hosting gives control, but it makes those duties yours.

  • Effortless Asset Management: Monitor and transact seamlessly with Trezor Suite, our intuitive desktop and mobile app
  • Enhanced Backup Solution: Multi-share Backup eliminates single points of failure for secure cold wallet recovery

2. Deploy the required services

Plan for BTCPay Server, NBXplorer, Bitcoin Core and PostgreSQL. Select guided deployment, Docker or manual installation according to your team’s operational skills. For Lightning, choose whether to connect Core Lightning or LND and determine how channels, liquidity, backups and node recovery will be managed.

3. Create the merchant boundary

Configure a store and the wallet arrangements that receive customer payments. BTCPay’s model sends payments directly to the merchant wallet, and receiving does not require the server to hold private keys. Keep signing authority and payment monitoring separate where that improves security.

4. Create a scoped API credential

For an application integration, record the BTCPay instance URL and store ID, then issue a scoped Greenfield API key. Grant only the permissions needed for invoice creation, status reads or the other endpoints your integration uses. Keep the key server-side, rotate it under a documented procedure and test behavior after rotation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Build for version and plugin differences

Pin your integration tests to the BTCPay server version you operate. The available endpoints can vary with server version and installed plugins. Treat an upgrade as an API compatibility event: read the release notes, test invoice creation and settlement callbacks, and retain a rollback or recovery plan.

Custody, keys and operational risk

The products expose different security questions. Breez’s non-custodial description points toward an app in which signing authority and recovery are part of the user or application architecture. BTCPay’s direct-to-wallet model lets a merchant receive payments without placing private keys on the payment server, but the merchant still has to secure wallet infrastructure and any signing systems used for spending.

  • For a Breez integration: document who can authorize a payment, how a lost device is recovered and whether a passkey, external signer or another method is used.
  • For BTCPay: restrict administrative access, isolate the server, back up databases and node data, protect API keys and rehearse restoration.
  • For either product: separate test and production credentials, monitor settlement and failed payments, and define limits for withdrawals and refunds.

Costs that belong in the business case

Cost category Breez SDK BTCPay Server
Software availability Free and open source for developers, according to Breez Free and open source; BTCPay says no subscription or transaction fees
Network fees Depend on the payment path and selected implementation; verify current terms Bitcoin network fees apply
Hosting Your app and supporting services still require infrastructure A VPS or other hosting arrangement may add recurring cost
Lightning operations Confirm the selected SDK architecture, liquidity and service costs Budget for channel and liquidity operations when running Lightning yourself
Maintenance SDK upgrades, app security and payment support Server updates, database and node maintenance, monitoring, backups and incident response

Do not publish a single “fee winner” from the software-license statements alone. Breez’s free SDK claim does not establish that all end-user transaction, liquidity or on-chain paths are free. BTCPay’s no-fee statement excludes the network, hosting and operational expenses a merchant incurs.

When combining Breez and BTCPay makes sense

BTCPay documents a Breez Lightning support plugin labeled BETA RELEASE. It uses Breez SDK powered by Blockstream Greenlight and advertises channel and liquidity automation. This can suit a BTCPay merchant that wants Lightning checkout without operating every part of Lightning infrastructure itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Beta status is a production-readiness caveat, not a guarantee of stability or support expectations. Validate the current plugin instructions, compatibility and recovery behavior before using it for material payment volume.

Seed phrase and liquidity cautions

The plugin instructions configure a 12-word seed phrase. Treat that phrase as key material: generate and store it according to a documented secure procedure, restrict access and test recovery before accepting production payments. The page also gives an illustrative inbound-liquidity sizing example. That example is guidance for the page’s scenario, not a universal channel-sizing rule; actual requirements depend on payment size, volume, channel policy and uptime.

The same documentation mentions a possible future read-only key capability. Because it is described prospectively, do not treat it as available functionality in a deployment plan.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by feature count

A long list of wallet features does not make an SDK a merchant processor, and a polished checkout does not make a server a drop-in end-user wallet. Start with the product boundary, then verify the individual features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming self-hosted means maintenance-free

BTCPay has no subscription or transaction fee, but the operator still owns security patches, backups, node health, database recovery, monitoring and Lightning operations. Put those tasks in an on-call plan before launch.

  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

Assuming non-custodial removes key management

Breez’s non-custodial model still requires a clear signer and recovery design. Users need understandable consequences for lost devices, revoked passkeys and failed backups.

Using broad compatibility claims without version checks

BTCPay API endpoints depend on server version and installed plugins. Breez capabilities depend on the SDK version and implementation. Pin versions, run integration tests and document upgrade procedures.

Treating beta Lightning automation as a guaranteed production service

The Breez-powered BTCPay plugin is explicitly beta. Stage it with limited value, monitor closely and retain a fallback payment path while you establish its operational behavior.

A practical decision framework

  1. Identify the account owner. If each end user needs wallet functionality inside your product, begin with Breez SDK. If one merchant needs to receive customer payments, begin with BTCPay.
  2. Draw the custody boundary. Mark where keys are generated, where signing occurs and who can recover funds.
  3. List the payment rails. Separate on-chain Bitcoin, Lightning, stablecoins, withdrawals and invoice-based checkout; verify each rail independently.
  4. Assign operations. If your team cannot own a Bitcoin and database stack, do not select BTCPay self-hosting without an explicit hosting and support plan.
  5. Price the complete path. Include network fees, hosting, liquidity, maintenance, security work and support—not only the software license.
  6. Prototype the failure cases. Expired invoices, interrupted devices, API-key rotation, node downtime and database restoration should all be tested before launch.

Bottom line for common app scenarios

A consumer app adding payments between users

Start with Breez SDK. Its embedded wallet and payment capabilities align with an app-owned experience, provided you can implement the required signer, recovery and support model.

An online merchant needing invoices and checkout

Start with BTCPay Server if you are prepared to operate the infrastructure. Its store, checkout and Greenfield API model is built around merchant payment processing and direct-to-wallet settlement.

A merchant that wants BTCPay with less Lightning infrastructure

Investigate the Breez Lightning plugin, but treat the documented beta status as a meaningful deployment constraint. Verify current setup, seed handling, liquidity behavior and recovery before committing production volume.

A platform that needs both merchant processing and an embedded wallet

Use each product at the boundary where it fits: BTCPay for the platform’s merchant processor and Breez SDK for wallet functionality inside the application. Keep identities, API permissions, signing authority and reconciliation records explicitly separated.
