Short answer: Yes—the headline describes a real September 2024 event in Brazil. After access to X was suspended on August 30, Bluesky said it added more than 2.6 million users in several days, over 85% of them in Brazil, and it briefly reached No. 1 on Brazil’s free iPhone app chart. That was a major acquisition shock, not proof that Bluesky replaced X or that every new account became a regular user.
What happened when Brazil suspended X?
Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered internet providers to block X beginning August 30, 2024, after the company failed to comply with court orders, including appointing a legal representative in Brazil. The dispute was a legal enforcement action, not simply a personal ban imposed by a politician on Elon Musk’s service. X later regained access after complying with the court’s requirements and paying outstanding fines, so the suspension was temporary.

On September 4, Bluesky announced more than 2.6 million new users in several days, with more than 85% located in Brazil. That figure is a registration count, not a count of daily or monthly active users. Independent app-intelligence data from Sensor Tower found that Bluesky briefly reached No. 1 among free iPhone apps in Brazil.

The starting-point comparison shows why the event was important but not a platform replacement. Sensor Tower estimated about 11 million mobile daily active users for X in Brazil in August 2024, compared with roughly 40,000 for Bluesky. A rapid increase from a small base can dominate download charts while still leaving a large gap in total reach.

Registrations are not active usage
“More than 2.6 million users” means accounts created during the reported period. It does not establish how many people returned after the first week, posted regularly, or continued using Bluesky after X access was restored.

App-store rank measures momentum
No. 1 on Brazil’s free iPhone chart means Bluesky had the highest recent download velocity in that chart. It does not mean it had Brazil’s largest social audience, the most engagement, or the most daily users. Threads reportedly overtook Bluesky in some rankings as the migration developed. Bluesky’s headline total has a defined scope
Bluesky’s 2025 transparency report says its user count includes accounts hosted on Bluesky infrastructure and accounts across thousands of Personal Data Servers. That scope is not identical to a mobile daily-active-user estimate for X or an app-download count, so direct comparisons require care.
- Registered users: Accounts created.
- Monthly or daily active users: People active during a stated month or day.
- Downloads: App installations, which can include repeat installs and people who never register.
- App-store rank: Relative download velocity, not total audience size.
- Hosted users: Accounts counted within the infrastructure scope described by Bluesky.
Why Bluesky attracted former X users
A familiar conversation format
Bluesky offers public, short-form, follow-based conversations that feel familiar to X users. Chronological timelines and optional custom feeds appeal to people who want more control than a single mandatory recommendation stream.

Communities moved with recognizable accounts
Brazilian journalists, politicians, artists and creators helped supply the network effect that a new social service normally lacks. Users were more likely to stay long enough to explore an alternative when people they already followed appeared there.

Bluesky is the main app built on the AT Protocol, which allows third parties to develop feeds, moderation services and alternative clients. Its explanation of that model is in the company’s September 2024 post. The company added video support in September 2024, as described in its video announcement, making the service more practical for media-heavy users.
“Decentralized” does not mean the main Bluesky app is free of corporate control or moderation. Bluesky operates the principal service and its own policy systems, while the wider protocol permits other services and servers.

Bluesky was not the only beneficiary

Bluesky’s later totals show that the company’s overall growth was durable beyond the first week. It reported 25.94 million users at the end of 2024, 41.41 million at the end of 2025 and more than 44 million by May 2026. It also reported 1.41 billion posts and 9.97 million moderation reports in 2025.

Those totals do not isolate the Brazilian cohort. Bluesky recorded another major growth wave around the November 2024 U.S. election, and more than 2 million people joined during the four months preceding the July 2026 CEO announcement. Publicly cited figures do not establish what percentage of Brazilian sign-ups logged in or posted after the ban period, or how many returned to X once access was restored.

Questions that remain unanswered
- What share of Brazilian registrations became monthly or daily active users?
- How many Brazilian accounts remained active after X returned?
- Did Brazil become a lasting core market or mainly an acquisition event?
- How did Brazilian activity compare with Threads and X on a like-for-like active-user basis?
What this means for someone choosing Bluesky
- Check your audience: Search for the journalists, creators, organizations and communities you actually follow.
- Decide how much control you want: Custom feeds and algorithmic choice are useful if you are willing to configure them.
- Understand moderation: The main app has centralized policy enforcement even though the protocol supports other services.
- Consider portability: The AT Protocol may offer more choice among feeds, moderation services and clients, at the cost of a less uniform experience.
- Check needed features: Video is available, but feature coverage can differ from X, Threads and other platforms, especially for direct messages, group conversations and media workflows.
- Protect identity: A recognizable handle and a linked domain can help establish identity, but neither makes an account automatically verified.
- Check local rules: Age-assurance and content requirements can vary by country or U.S. state.
The broader lesson from Brazil
Platform restrictions can redirect attention very quickly, but attention becomes lasting adoption only when communities, creators and useful features move together. Open protocols can make an alternative more attractive during a migration shock, yet they still have to handle spam, impersonation, harassment, moderation backlogs and infrastructure costs.
The evidence supports a precise conclusion: Brazil’s temporary X suspension was a major catalyst for Bluesky’s visibility and user acquisition. It does not support saying that Bluesky replaced X in Brazil, that all 2.6 million newcomers were active users, or that the ban caused every subsequent milestone through 2026.
