Brazil votes in the first round of its presidential election on Sunday, October 4, 2026. Incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro are the leading contenders in a close, highly polarized race, but 12 presidential tickets are registered. If no candidate wins more than half of valid votes, the top two will meet in a runoff on October 25. As of October 3, the vote has not taken place and the result is unknown.

When is Brazil’s presidential election, and how does it work?

The first round is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, 2026, with voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brasília time. The Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) reports 158,765,543 eligible voters nationwide. That is the size of the eligible electorate, not a turnout estimate.

A candidate must receive more than 50% of valid votes to win in the first round. If no one clears that threshold, the two candidates with the most valid votes advance to a second round scheduled for October 25. The threshold is based on valid votes, not every ballot cast.

Who is running against Lula in Brazil?

The TSE lists 12 registered presidential tickets. Lula, of the Workers’ Party (PT), is running with Geraldo Alckmin of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB). Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party (PL), is running with Alfredo Gaspar. Ten other tickets are also registered; the contest is not formally limited to the two front-runners.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva

Lula is the incumbent president, seeking another nonconsecutive term. He previously won a third, nonconsecutive term in 2022. The Associated Press describes his campaign as emphasizing social programs, the cost of living, public security, Amazon protection, and Brazilian control over natural resources. AP also reports that concerns about crime and living costs could be vulnerabilities for his campaign; that is a reported political assessment, not a proven forecast of how those issues will affect votes.

Flávio Bolsonaro

Flávio Bolsonaro is a senator and the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. He is running for president for the first time. AP characterizes his campaign as carrying forward much of his father’s conservative agenda while using a more moderate communication style to appeal to centrist voters.

Why is Brazil’s presidential race described as close?

Recent coverage describes a tight contest and reports that a potential Lula–Flávio Bolsonaro runoff could be essentially even. That characterization should not be mistaken for an election result or a precise polling estimate: the Axios report making the comparison does not provide the pollster, survey dates, sample size, or margin of error in its opened account. Without those details, a specific polling spread cannot be responsibly stated.

AP describes Lula and Flávio as the only candidates thought to have a real chance of winning. That is a reporter’s assessment of the field, not an official TSE designation. With 12 tickets registered, the first-round vote still determines which candidates advance if no one wins outright.

What are Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro promising?

The campaign debate spans public security, economic and social priorities, environmental policy, and Brazil’s relationship with the United States. The reporting available on these issues does not support a complete, point-by-point policy scorecard, so the comparison below distinguishes stated campaign priorities from proposals reported for Flávio Bolsonaro and topics where the available accounts do not specify a comparable position.

Issue Lula Flávio Bolsonaro
Public security AP says public security is among Lula’s campaign priorities. AP reports proposals for large prisons, classifying transnational criminal groups as terrorist organizations, and lowering the age for adult prosecution to 16. These are campaign proposals, not enacted policy.
Economic and social policy AP says Lula emphasizes social programs and the cost of living. A directly comparable economic or welfare proposal is not stated in the cited AP account.
Amazon and environmental rules AP says Lula emphasizes Amazon protection and Brazilian control over natural resources. Axios describes forest protection and sovereignty as parts of his campaign message. Axios reports that Flávio has backed loosening environmental rules. This describes a reported policy direction, not a certain outcome if he wins.
United States relations Axios frames the election against recent U.S.–Brazil tariff tensions and reports that Lula stresses national sovereignty. Axios describes the election as consequential for Brazil’s relationship with the Trump administration, but its account does not state a specific Flávio proposal on that relationship.

These are campaign positions and reported proposals, not changes already made to Brazilian law. What a president could implement would depend on subsequent decisions and political conditions; the cited accounts do not establish the outcome of any proposal.

What could the election mean for the Amazon and U.S.–Brazil ties?

Environmental policy and relations with Washington are part of the race’s broader stakes. Axios connects the contest to recent tariff tensions between the United States and Brazil, and to choices about Amazon policy. Its account contrasts Lula’s emphasis on sovereignty and forest protection with Flávio Bolsonaro’s reported support for loosening environmental rules.

What happened with the final TV Globo debate?

Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro did not attend the planned TV Globo debate shortly before the first round. Globo canceled the event after an electoral-court ruling required a change to Lula’s empty reserved seat and a Supreme Court ruling required that candidate Renan Santos be invited. The broadcaster cited legal uncertainty.

The cancellation did not mean the candidates had no debate opportunities: other media and business groups had held debates with candidates since August 23.

Why did Flávio Bolsonaro’s religious statement become controversial?

On August 23, Flávio Bolsonaro said in a video that he would “declare that Brazil belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ.” Some interpreted the statement as suggesting he would remove Our Lady of Aparecida as Brazil’s patron saint. AP reports that Bolsonaro rejected that interpretation and said he meant a symbolic act, such as prayer. The reported controversy is about how his remark was understood, not a confirmed proposal to remove the saint; AP says a Brazilian president does not have authority to change the patron saint, whose designation is a Vatican prerogative.

Religion is politically salient, but population affiliation figures do not show how religious groups will vote. AP, citing Brazil’s 2022 census, reports that 56.7% of the population identified as Catholic and 26.9% as Evangelical. Those figures describe religious affiliation, not voter preferences or voting intentions.
