Why Atlanta’s plan for Sale is uncertain
Sale started Atlanta’s Wild Card Series opener against Philadelphia on Sept. 29, then pitched in relief in the decisive Game 3 on Oct. 1. He recorded the final four outs of the Braves’ 6–2 win that sent them to the NLDS, according to FOX Sports.
After the clincher, Weiss was asked whether Sale could start Sunday. “I don’t know. I have no idea. We weren’t even worried about that. We haven’t even talked about that. We didn’t look past tonight,” he said in the FOX Sports report. The report also said Weiss had not asked Sale about the relief outing beforehand because he expected Sale to agree even if he were tired.
A subsequent update from CBS Sports/RotoWire, citing ESPN’s Alden González, said Weiss had not ruled out Game 2 but would favor rest if the decision were close. It characterized Game 3 as the apparent preference while leaving open the possibility that Sale might push to pitch Sunday. That was a reported indication, not a team announcement.

What is known about the NLDS rotation
MLB’s Oct. 2 rotation preview projected a likely bullpen game for Atlanta in Game 1, Sale in Game 2 and Tyler Mahle as the likely Game 3 starter. Grant Holmes might follow a left-handed opener in Game 1, the preview said. Those were projections rather than confirmed assignments; the preview noted the unusual short interval since Sale’s Wild Card start and his relief appearance.
MLB’s Oct. 3 Game 1 FAQ said Sale would not be available before Game 2. That establishes the earliest point at which he could pitch, but does not establish whether he would start, relieve, or be held out.

When are Games 2 and 3?
Game 2 was scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4, at Dodger Stadium, with first pitch at 5 p.m. PT (8 p.m. ET), according to the Dodgers’ official schedule announcement. MLB’s Sept. 29 postseason FAQ describes the NLDS as a best-of-five series with two off-days. The cited reports discussed a possible Game 3 slot for Sale, but did not provide its start time.
Why the choice matters beyond Game 2
Atlanta’s decision balances Sale’s workload against how the club wants to line up its pitchers across a short series. He had made a Wild Card start and then thrown four outs in relief two days later. Starting him Sunday would mean less recovery time than waiting for a later turn; the reports do not establish that he was injured or medically unfit.

MLB’s rotation preview said a Game 2 start would also keep Sale in play for a potential Game 5 on regular rest. Holding him for Game 3 could give him more time after the Wild Card workload, but would change the rotation sequence. Until Atlanta announces a starter, neither the projection nor his earliest availability settles which course the Braves will take.

FOX Sports reported that Sale finished the 2026 regular season with a 14–9 record and a 2.16 ERA, striking out 200 batters in 162 2/3 innings. Those figures describe his regular-season performance; they do not establish his readiness for a Sunday start after the Wild Card Series workload.
