Braves manager Walt Weiss said Oct. 2 that right-hander Bryce Elder will not be available for Atlanta’s National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Elder is recovering from right knee surgery and had resumed live batting practice, but a possible role in a later round remains conditional on the Braves advancing.
Why Bryce Elder is unavailable for the NLDS
Elder had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in early September, with bone fragments removed. He had been dealing with discomfort since the All-Star break. The initial estimate was three to four weeks out, but that was a recovery estimate, not a guarantee that he would be ready for the postseason. MLB reported the procedure and estimate.
His recovery timeline changed as the postseason approached
- Early September: Elder underwent surgery. The initial three-to-four-week estimate suggested a possible return timeframe, but did not establish playoff availability.
- Sept. 28: Elder threw live batting practice. In its Sept. 30 injury update, MLB described NLDS availability as optimistic and a possible NLCS return as more plausible.
- Oct. 2: Weiss said Elder would not be available for the NLDS, superseding the earlier hopeful assessment. Field Level Media reported the manager’s decision.
Could Elder return if Atlanta reaches the NLCS?
Weiss left open the possibility of discussing Elder for a later round if the Braves advance: “We’re hoping, if we advance, that Bryce is in that conversation,” Field Level Media reported. That is a conditional possibility, not confirmation that Elder will be activated or pitch in the NLCS. The available reporting does not establish a return date or whether he will pitch again in 2026.
Elder’s reported 2026 season numbers
Field Level Media reported that Elder went 8-8 with a 4.11 ERA in 26 starts. CBS Sports/RotoWire reported a 4.11 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 121 strikeouts against 49 walks over 149 innings in 26 starts. These are outlet-reported figures, not independently audited here. CBS Sports’ report also said he would not be on Atlanta’s NLDS roster.
