Yes—Brave Leo now encrypts prompts on your device before they leave it, but only the attested Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) running the model can decrypt them. Brave announced the feature on October 15, 2026, for Leo’s GLM 5.3 Flash model in Brave Release, Beta, and Nightly. The relay that handles the network connection can see your IP address, but it cannot read the encrypted prompt.
What Brave changed
The encrypted mode is designed to keep readable chat content away from Brave, the network relay, and infrastructure operators. Brave says the browser encrypts each prompt—and any page content you explicitly share with Leo—before transmission. Decryption occurs only inside hardware-protected environments that have passed an attestation check.

This is stronger than ordinary HTTPS transport encryption. HTTPS protects data while it travels between endpoints, but the service operating the endpoint can normally read it. In Leo’s design, Brave says its relay receives ciphertext, while the model receives plaintext only inside an attested TEE.

How the encrypted request works
- Attestation comes first. Brave’s open-source verifier checks the TEE attestation, confirms that the approved software build is running, and verifies a key signed from inside the TEE.
- A failed check stops the request. Brave says, “If the check fails, Brave won’t hand out the key or relay your message.” The browser therefore does not send the protected request to an unverified environment.
- The browser encrypts locally. A fresh, one-time key is generated for each turn. The prompt and shared page content are encrypted on the device, and the complete conversation is re-encrypted as the exchange continues.
- An OHTTP relay separates identity from content. Brave’s AI Gateway forwards the encrypted request. It can see the connecting user’s IP address, but it cannot decrypt the payload.
- The attested service performs inference. The NEAR AI gateway and the inference environment run inside TEEs. They can decrypt and process the request inside those enclaves, while the NEAR AI side does not receive the user’s IP address because Brave forwards the traffic under Brave’s account.

The practical answer to “Can Brave read my Leo chats?” is that Brave says it does not receive a readable copy. Its relay still knows the source IP address of the connection, so the feature does not make your network identity invisible to Brave’s relay. It separates that identity from the prompt content instead.
Where Leo conversations are stored
Leo’s help center says local chat history is kept in local storage on your device. The model help page says conversation data is discarded from Brave’s servers immediately after a chat session ends. That means browser history and local storage on the device remain important: someone with access to your unlocked profile or a copied browser profile may still be able to see locally saved chats.

Brave also says no account or login is required. Premium subscriptions are validated with unlinkable tokens, so entitlement checking is designed not to attach a readable conversation to a conventional account identity.

At the October 15 launch, encrypted Leo is tied to GLM 5.3 Flash. Brave describes it as an open-weight model released by Z.ai under the MIT license and hosted by NEAR AI in attested hardware. The supported model and delivery channel are not permanent guarantees: Brave’s earlier November 20, 2025 announcement began verifiable-TEE Leo with DeepSeek V3.1 in Nightly.

Brave says it plans to add more Leo features and open-weight models to verifiably private chats. Check the model label in your installed Brave channel before assuming another Leo model receives the same protection.

Brave uses end-to-end encryption to describe protection from intermediaries that relay the request. The endpoint that runs inference is still able to decrypt the prompt, because the model must read it to produce an answer. The privacy boundary is therefore the attested TEE, not the user’s device alone.

Trust moves to several components: Brave’s verifier, the attestation evidence, the enclave hardware, and the exact code and model build covered by that attestation. If any of those assumptions fail, encryption alone cannot prove that the intended model—not a modified service—processed the text. Brave’s stated goal, carried over from its 2025 announcement, is that users should be able to verify they are speaking privately with the model they expect.
The design also does not hide every piece of metadata. Brave’s relay can see your IP address, and the network must still carry an encrypted request and response. The published architecture does not claim that relay operators can read the words in those messages.
What you need to use it
- A current Brave browser in the Release, Beta, or Nightly channel.
- Leo access with GLM 5.3 Flash selected when the encrypted mode is offered.
- No separate account or login for basic use.
- No special security key, VPN, headset, webcam, or other hardware; the protection is integrated into Brave and the remote attested infrastructure.
Because the feature is tied to a specific model and attested pipeline, an ordinary Leo conversation using a different model should not automatically be treated as having the same guarantees. The model name and privacy indicator in the Leo interface are the relevant checks.
Bottom line for privacy-conscious users
Brave Leo’s new mode provides a credible, verifiable-enclave approach: the browser encrypts each turn locally, the relay can separate your IP from the content, and only an attested TEE is supposed to see plaintext for inference. It is not anonymous messaging—the Brave relay sees your IP—and it is not protection against someone who can access your device’s local storage. For the supported GLM 5.3 Flash path, however, Brave says neither it nor NEAR AI holds a readable server-side copy of the chat to train on, hand over, or leak.
