The most useful spray for boxelder bugs is an exterior product whose label specifically allows use against boxelder bugs on the surface you intend to treat. Even then, spraying is an optional supplement for substantial or recurring outdoor clusters—not a dependable indoor fix. Start by sealing entry points; vacuum or sweep up bugs that get inside.
Why boxelder bugs gather on homes
In fall, boxelder bugs congregate on buildings as they seek sheltered places to overwinter. Small gaps around windows, doors, siding, utilities, foundations, and screens can let them indoors. Exclusion addresses the route in; a spray does not seal it.

Seal openings before fall clustering
Repair window, door, roof, and vent screens. Add suitable door sweeps or weatherstripping, and seal cracks around windows, doors, siding, utility penetrations, and foundations. Keep weep holes and any openings needed for ventilation or drainage clear; blocking them can create other building problems.

When an exterior spray may help
Consider an exterior insecticide only when outdoor aggregations are substantial or keep recurring, or when fully sealing the building is difficult. University of Minnesota Extension describes late summer and early fall, when bugs first cluster on buildings, as the best time for treatment. The purpose is to reduce outdoor clusters before entry, not to create a permanent barrier.

Before buying or applying a product, read its current label. Confirm that boxelder bugs are listed and that the label permits use on the specific exterior site or surface you plan to treat. Follow all label directions; a general-purpose bug spray is not automatically suitable. University of Missouri Extension likewise advises confirming the pest on the container label.

University of Minnesota Extension and Penn State discuss exterior treatments as possible supplements, while UC IPM generally discourages insecticide sprays for boxelder bug management. The practical takeaway is restrained: spray is one possible outdoor measure, not the first or only step. Sunlight can break down insecticides and reduce residual effect, and additional bugs may arrive after treatment. Penn State’s page was revised in December 2011, so consult the current product label rather than treating its older active-ingredient discussion as a current product recommendation.

What to do about bugs inside
Vacuum, sweep, or hand-collect indoor boxelder bugs. Empty the vacuum promptly, and avoid crushing bugs on curtains, walls, or other surfaces that may stain. The National Pesticide Information Center and University of Minnesota Extension recommend physical removal for bugs already indoors.
Spraying indoor cracks and crevices is not a reliable way to stop more bugs from emerging from hidden spaces. Focus instead on removing the visible insects and closing access points. For removal and identification guidance, see the National Pesticide Information Center.

Outdoor alternatives and when to get help
A hose or direct-contact soapy-water approach may help knock down visible outdoor clusters, but it should not be treated as a lasting barrier. Do not assume a homemade mixture is safe for every surface, plant, or nearby animal; avoid unintended contact and use any product only as directed.
For large or persistent exterior aggregations—especially where sealing is difficult—a licensed pest control operator may be able to assess the building and treatment options. The control guidance supports that as a reasonable category of help, but does not establish a particular provider or service availability.
