BOSS vs YOU is a browser-based pixel dungeon in which an open-weights language model chooses how the boss responds to the way you play. The project, built by Ishaan Jindal for a bored friend, pairs that adaptive opponent with a rules-based fallback intended to keep the game playable when model calls fail.
What is BOSS vs YOU?
It is a browser game built around a familiar frustration: “Too easy, too grindy, too predictable — the boss does the same three moves, so why keep playing?” BOSS vs YOU tries to make the opponent less predictable by giving its boss a model-driven brain that reacts to fight conditions and a profile of the player’s habits.

The game loop is a pixel dungeon: clear minions and a boss phase in each room, draft a level-up card, then descend further. The main boss is one enemy that changes among four forms. Those details, and the implementation claims below, come from Jindal’s DEV project article, published October 4, 2026; they are the creator’s account, not findings from an independent review.

About every eight seconds, the server sends the model a snapshot of the fight, including health, positions, room, and a player-habit profile. The model can select weighted tactics such as pressure, bait, or bombs, and can choose whether to transform, how to open an encounter, and what taunt to use.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The habit profile is described as a summary of the last 60 fights. Its inputs include turtle ratio, dash frequency, potion timing, preferred range, and causes of death. In the author’s examples, a player who camps in a corner may be baited, while someone who dashes constantly may be punished. This is the intended design: the boss does not just react to the current frame, but uses patterns from recent play.
What happens when the model is unavailable?
A rules-based stub takes over if a model request fails, times out, or returns unusable output. Jindal also says the game can run fully offline without API keys through this fallback. That makes the fallback more than an emergency error screen: it is the route for play when the model cannot be reached. The available account does not establish how closely fallback behavior matches model-driven fights.

How it is built
Jindal describes a vanilla JavaScript Canvas 2D client and a Python backend using FastAPI and uvicorn. The server calls model APIs with raw httpx rather than an SDK. The primary and failover endpoints are both described as Gemma 4: Google REST and DeepInfra’s OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The author says two constants can be changed to point the brain at another weights-compatible endpoint, including a locally run Gemma; that is a description of this project’s configuration, not a general guarantee that any model endpoint will work without adaptation.

The author reports replacing a 1.3 MB vendored Three.js dependency with a 210-line pixel renderer. They also report that the JavaScript client mirrors four Python formulas and that a parity suite had 93 passing tests. These are implementation figures reported by the creator, not independently verified measurements.

Latency and reliability trade-offs
The author says full model reasoning took 20–40 seconds per tick, so reasoning was capped to MINIMAL. That reported delay is longer than the roughly eight-second update cadence described for the game, so it should not be read as evidence that full-reasoning calls met the intended cadence. The model, endpoint, network, and generation settings can all affect response time; the article does not provide an independent latency test or a broader comparison.
The project’s design choices address different constraints: model calls can add behavioral variety, the fallback helps preserve play when calls fail, and the offline mode avoids dependence on a live API. The sources do not provide comparative benchmarks for responsiveness, fallback quality, or the difficulty of swapping endpoints.

Where to try it and what the sources establish
Jindal’s article links a hosted demo and an MIT-licensed code repository. At the time the sources were reviewed, the deployed demo returned a 503 error and the repository could not be fetched, so those links are not independent confirmation that the game is currently accessible or that the reported code and tests are reproducible.

The project was made for DEV’s Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge, whose theme was “Build for a Friend.” DEV’s official challenge page records a submission deadline of October 5, 2026 at 6:59 AM UTC and marks the challenge ended. The prompt called for open-source AI at the project’s core and asked builders to explain why openness matters. The challenge context does not establish that BOSS vs YOU won a prize.

The hook is specific: this is a small browser dungeon that tries to make its boss learn your habits rather than repeat a fixed routine. Whether its adaptive fights feel better than a conventional boss encounter is a question the creator’s description cannot settle; there is no independent playtest or user study in the available sources.
