Short answer: neither Bose SoundLink nor JBL wins across every size and use case. Choose the Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) or JBL Flip 7 for a genuinely portable speaker; move up to the Bose SoundLink Plus or Max, or JBL Xtreme 4, when you need more output, longer claimed battery life, or the ability to recharge a phone. The right choice depends more on the exact model, weight, protection rating, battery conditions and pairing features than on the logo.
The specifications below come from Bose and JBL product information available through 2025. They are not a controlled listening, drop, battery or volume test. Sound descriptions are therefore presented as each manufacturer’s positioning, not as an independent ranking. Prices, stock and model availability can change by country and retailer.

What you are really comparing
“Bose SoundLink versus JBL” sounds like a brand question, but the two ranges span several classes of speaker. A pocket-size unit, a one-kilogram day-trip speaker and a four-kilogram party speaker do not serve the same buyer. Start by deciding how far you will carry it, how many people need to hear it, whether it may get wet or dusty, and whether it must charge a phone.
Bose’s current SoundLink family, announced on June 12, 2025, contains the Micro (2nd Gen), Flex (2nd Gen), Plus and Max. JBL’s comparison range includes the GO4, CLIP5, GRIP, Flip 7, Charge 6, Xtreme 4 and Boombox 4. JBL’s catalog is updated regularly, so verify that a model and generation are still sold in your market.

| Bose SoundLink Max | Large portable speaker | 4.9 lb | IP67 | Up to 20 hours at 65% volume under Bose’s stated test; up to 3 hours at maximum volume | Yes | Current SoundLink family pairing; matching models for Stereo Mode |

| JBL Xtreme 4 | Large portable/party speaker | 4.63 lb | IP67 | 24 hours maximum, plus up to 6 additional hours with Playtime Boost | Yes | Auracast connection where supported |
“Not stated” means the cited manufacturer material does not establish a comparable figure; it is not a claim that the feature is absent. Do not infer a whole-brand rating from one model’s IP code.
Choose by carrying distance and group size
For everyday carry: SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) or Flip 7
The JBL Flip 7 has a published weight of 1.82 lb, making it the clearer choice when the speaker travels in a backpack, picnic basket or suitcase and every ounce matters. Its IP68 rating is also the stronger published ingress rating of these two models. Bose lists the Flex (2nd Gen) as an IP67 speaker and claims up to 12 hours at moderate volume. Bose does not publish a comparable weight on the cited specification page, so you should check the local product listing if carry weight is decisive.
Pick between them using your phone and speaker ecosystem, preferred controls and local price rather than assuming one brand is automatically louder or better sounding. JBL’s Flip 7 page uses two playtime figures: 14 hours maximum in detailed specifications and up to 16 hours when Playtime Boost is used in the headline copy. Treat the 16-hour figure as a mode-dependent marketing claim, not a directly comparable laboratory result against Bose’s 12-hour moderate-volume statement.

The larger models are easier to hear across a room or outside, but they are a different portability class. Bose introduced the SoundLink Plus at a U.S. launch price of $269 in its June 12, 2025 announcement; that was a launch price, not a guarantee of today’s street price. The announcement does not establish a comparable weight, IP rating or battery figure, so verify those details for the exact regional listing.

JBL publishes the Xtreme 4 at 4.63 lb and IP67. Its product information lists up to 24 hours of maximum playtime, with up to six additional hours using Playtime Boost. The removable rechargeable battery is replaceable, although the replacement is sold separately. That serviceability can matter more than a small difference in advertised hours if you plan to keep the speaker for years.
For the largest SoundLink option: SoundLink Max
The SoundLink Max weighs 4.9 lb and carries an IP67 rating. Bose states up to 20 hours at 65% volume under its own test conditions, and up to three hours at maximum volume. The test description includes Bluetooth A2DP playback, room temperature, default equalization and no charging of an external device. Those conditions explain why the maximum-volume result is much shorter than the headline figure.
Max can charge a phone from the speaker, which is useful at a park or campsite but means the speaker’s own runtime will depend on how much power you transfer. Its weight is close to the Xtreme 4’s, so compare handles, dimensions and your preferred app before buying.

IP ratings are model-specific. Bose lists IP67 for the Flex (2nd Gen) and Max. JBL lists IP68 for Flip 7 and IP67 for Xtreme 4. The first digit describes dust protection and the second describes water protection under the testing standard; an IP68 product is not automatically indestructible, and neither rating covers every kind of impact, saltwater exposure or chemical contamination.

- IP67: dust-tight and designed for temporary immersion under the manufacturer’s stated test conditions.

Close charging-port covers before exposure, rinse off salt or chlorinated water with fresh water when the manual permits it, and let the speaker dry before connecting power. Water resistance does not mean you should operate a speaker while its port is wet.
Battery claims are useful only with their conditions attached
Advertised hours are not a standardized head-to-head score. Volume, music content, temperature, Bluetooth codec behavior, equalizer settings and phone charging all change runtime. Bose’s Flex figure is up to 12 hours at moderate volume. Max’s 20-hour figure is measured at 65% volume under the conditions described above, while maximum volume can reduce it to about three hours.
JBL’s Flip 7 page illustrates why you must read the detail: its specification section says 14 hours maximum music playback, while headline copy says up to 16 hours with Playtime Boost. Xtreme 4 lists 24 hours maximum and up to six extra hours with Playtime Boost. These figures should guide expectations within each model, not be treated as a controlled comparison between brands.
How to plan for real trips
- Use the lower end of the claim when you expect high volume, cold weather or continuous outdoor use.
- Carry a power bank if the speaker lacks phone charging or if navigation and calls will drain your phone.
- Do not compare a special playback mode with ordinary playback on another speaker.
- If you will charge a phone from the speaker, reserve part of the battery rather than planning around the full headline number.
Sound, volume and wattage: what the specifications cannot tell you
Bose describes the SoundLink Plus with promotional language about delivering “incredible audio” for gatherings. That is Bose’s positioning, not an independent measurement. JBL’s comparison guidance warns that wattage does not scale directly to loudness: a 100-watt speaker is not necessarily twice as loud as a 50-watt speaker. Maximum sound-pressure level, enclosure design, driver efficiency, dispersion and distortion all matter, and the cited pages do not provide a controlled, apples-to-apples listening result.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For a buying decision, use physical size and intended listening distance as practical proxies, then check return terms so you can evaluate the sound in your own room. A larger cabinet generally gives a manufacturer more room to produce bass and headroom, but it also adds weight; that is a trade-off, not a universal quality ranking.
Phone charging and replaceable batteries
When a power bank function is worth paying for
SoundLink Max and JBL Xtreme 4 can charge a phone from the speaker. This is valuable when you are away from outlets and the speaker has a substantially larger battery than your phone. It is less useful for a short indoor session, where the added size and cost may bring no benefit. Charging an external device reduces the time available for music, so treat the feature as emergency power rather than free extra runtime.
Xtreme 4’s replaceable battery
JBL states that the Xtreme 4’s rechargeable battery is replaceable, with the replacement sold separately. Confirm regional availability and instructions before relying on that feature. A replaceable pack can extend the useful life of the speaker, but it does not make the speaker maintenance-free; seals, buttons and drivers can still age.

Bose SoundLink family
Bose says any two current SoundLink family models can pair for amplified audio. Stereo Mode requires two matching models, while Party Mode synchronizes audio. The Bose app handles control, customization and updates. The practical implication is that a Flex (2nd Gen), Plus, Max or Micro (2nd Gen) can participate in the family’s amplified setup, but you should buy a second identical model if true left/right stereo is your priority.

JBL Auracast models
JBL’s comparison page advertises Auracast connection for applicable models. Because support is model-specific, check the exact product page before assuming that every speaker in the JBL catalog can join the same group. Auracast compatibility is not the same thing as Bose SoundLink pairing: Bose and JBL speakers do not pair with each other as a shared stereo or party system.
Model-by-model buying advice
Buy Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) if
- You want a compact Bose option with an IP67 rating.
- Up to 12 hours at moderate volume fits your normal outings.
- You may later add another current SoundLink model and value Bose’s family pairing modes.
- You are willing to confirm weight and current price locally because the cited page does not state a comparable carry figure.
Buy JBL Flip 7 if
- Its published 1.82-lb weight is a major advantage.
- You want the stronger published IP68 rating among the compact choices.
- You can live with the distinction between 14 hours in detailed specifications and up to 16 hours with Playtime Boost in headline copy.
- You plan to use JBL’s supported Auracast ecosystem rather than Bose’s SoundLink grouping.
Buy Bose SoundLink Plus if
- You want a newer, larger SoundLink model for gatherings and prefer Bose’s app and pairing family.
- The announced U.S. launch price of $269 fits your budget, subject to current regional pricing.
- You are prepared to verify battery, weight and water rating from the exact listing because the announcement does not establish those comparable figures.
Buy Bose SoundLink Max if
- You want a 4.9-lb speaker with IP67 protection and phone charging.
- You value Bose’s stated 20-hour result at 65% volume and understand that maximum volume can cut runtime to about three hours.
- You expect to use the current SoundLink family’s amplified, Party or Stereo modes.
Buy JBL Xtreme 4 if
- You can carry 4.63 lb and want a larger outdoor speaker.
- You need phone charging and a replaceable rechargeable battery.
- You value JBL’s published 24-hour maximum claim plus up to six hours with Playtime Boost.
- You want an IP67-rated speaker in JBL’s supported Auracast ecosystem.
Do not mix generations when comparing prices or specifications
Bose’s first-generation SoundLink Flex product page is separate from the Flex (2nd Gen) specification page. A listing that simply says “SoundLink Flex” may therefore refer to different hardware. Check the generation, included accessories, firmware support and exact model number before using a first-generation price to judge the newer speaker.
The same caution applies to JBL’s changing catalog. Confirm whether the listing is for Flip 7, Xtreme 4 or another generation, and read the detailed specification tab rather than relying only on a retailer’s headline battery claim.

A practical purchase checklist
- Set the size limit. Decide whether 1.82 lb is acceptable for your normal carry, or whether a 4.63- to 4.9-lb speaker is realistic.
- Choose the protection level. Match IP67 or IP68 to your use, and plan to keep ports closed and dry.
- Define battery conditions. Compare moderate-volume, maximum-volume and Playtime Boost claims separately.
- Decide on utility features. Select phone charging or a replaceable battery only if you will actually use them.
- Pick one pairing ecosystem. Bose SoundLink pairing and JBL Auracast are separate systems; buying across brands will not create a shared stereo pair.
- Verify the current listing. Check generation, local price, stock, warranty, app compatibility and included cable before ordering.
- Test within the return window. Listen at the distances and volumes you actually use; manufacturer descriptions are not independent sound tests.
Bottom line by buyer type
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lightest clearly published compact option | JBL Flip 7 | 1.82 lb and IP68, with Auracast support where applicable |
| Compact Bose ecosystem | Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) | IP67, up to 12 hours at moderate volume and current SoundLink pairing |
| Phone charging in a large speaker | Bose SoundLink Max or JBL Xtreme 4 | Both are documented as able to charge a phone |
| Replaceable speaker battery | JBL Xtreme 4 | Replacement rechargeable battery is supported and sold separately |
| Longest stated maximum playtime among these models | JBL Xtreme 4 | Up to 24 hours maximum, plus up to six hours with Playtime Boost |
| SoundLink family multi-speaker setup | Any two current SoundLink models | Amplified audio across the family; identical models are needed for Stereo Mode |
For most buyers, the decisive shortlist is simple: Flip 7 versus Flex (2nd Gen) for portability, and Xtreme 4 versus SoundLink Max for a larger speaker with phone-charging utility. Sound quality should be judged with your own ears, while the published weight, IP rating, battery conditions and pairing rules keep the comparison honest.
