Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose the Sony WH-1000XM5 if longer manufacturer-rated battery life or LDAC support matters most. Choose Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) if you want its TrueSpatial listening modes, USB-C lossless audio, or ActiveSense in Aware Mode. There is no controlled comparison of these exact two models in the available evidence, so neither can be called the overall noise-canceling or sound-quality winner. Fit and the price you can get locally should help settle the decision.
How the two headphones compare
The Bose model discussed here is the 2026 QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen), not Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). The Sony is the WH-1000XM5. Their published features point to different priorities, but manufacturer specifications do not establish which sounds or performs better for every listener.

Where Bose has the clearer case
You want spatial modes or USB-C lossless playback
Bose lists three TrueSpatial modes—Still, Motion, and Cinema—and says wired USB-C audio supports lossless playback up to 24-bit/48-kHz. Those are specific feature reasons to prefer Bose if you plan to use them. Spatial processing is a preference, not a guaranteed improvement for every recording or listener. Bose product page
You value Bose’s stated noise-control and comfort package
Bose describes refinements to noise canceling, adds ActiveSense to Aware Mode, and markets the headphones around plush comfort. These are manufacturer descriptions, not proof that this model out-cancels or fits better than the XM5. Try both if possible, since fit is personal and can affect both comfort and how well earcups seal.
#1 Best Overall
- MODERN, UPDATED DESIGN: A sleek, streamlined take on the original noise cancelling headphones. All-new pill-shaped earcups and an adjustable sliding headband hit on contemporary design trends and modern aesthetics.
- COMFORTABLE FIT: The new headband is wider than the previous gen, and adds more of the supple, synthetic leather found on the earcups. The headphones strike the right balance of clamping force and comfort for a secure fit and lightweight feel.
- IMPROVED AUDIO PERFORMANCE: The addition of Bose TrueSpatial Technology gives listeners a more natural, immersive experience — no matter the content. QC Headphones (2nd Gen) now also feature high-fidelity lossless audio delivered by USB-C connection.
- LEGENDARY NOISE CANCELLING: Legendary Bose QuietControl noise cancelling technology includes updated ActiveSense Tech for adaptive acoustic noise reduction to smooth unwanted spikes in noise when listening in Aware Mode.
- MORE MODES: In addition to Quiet Mode for full noise cancelling and Aware Mode for transparency, these headphones now include Immersion, Cinema Mode, and ANR off. Cinema Mode enhances video content for an immersive experience with more layered sound.
Where Sony has the clearer case
You prioritize longer published battery maximums
Sony rates the XM5 for up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise canceling on and up to 40 hours with it off. Bose’s corresponding published figures are up to 24 hours, or 18 with Immersive Audio. The figures come from each manufacturer and the sources do not establish identical test methods or use conditions, so treat them as brand ratings rather than a same-lab comparison. You need LDAC
Sony lists LDAC alongside SBC and AAC. If your source device and listening setup support LDAC and that codec is part of your buying decision, the XM5 has the explicitly documented advantage in these specifications. Sony specifications

What previous-generation comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
RTINGS’ side-by-side comparison pairs the XM5 with the earlier Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless, not the 2026 QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen). It reports strong isolation for both and assesses the earlier Bose model as more comfortable. That may be useful context about the older pair, but it is not a test result for the new Bose generation and should not decide this matchup. RTINGS comparison
Tom’s Guide’s September 4, 2026 review calls the Bose model’s 24-hour battery rating middling compared with the broader market, notes its lack of wear detection, and observes that XM5 discounts may make Sony cheaper. Those are the reviewer’s assessment and a time-sensitive price observation, not a current price guarantee or a controlled comparison of noise cancellation. Tom’s Guide review

Make the choice based on your priorities
- Start with Sony if longer official battery maximums or LDAC support are your deciding factors.
- Start with Bose if you specifically want TrueSpatial modes, the stated USB-C lossless format, or ActiveSense in Aware Mode.
- Compare fit and live local prices before buying. Bose’s $359 was its announced US preorder price in August 2026, and Sony’s price can vary with retailer discounts; neither figure establishes what you will pay today.
