Neither earbud is a proven noise-canceling winner on the published evidence available here. Bose lists a slightly longer maximum battery life per charge, while Sony explicitly lists more audio codecs, including LDAC and LC3. Both offer multipoint connections and IPX4-class splash protection. Your best choice depends on fit, device compatibility and which features matter most—not on an established head-to-head ANC result.

Which models are being compared?

This comparison is between Bose’s current QuietComfort Earbuds generation, announced in September 2024, and Sony’s WF-1000XM5 true wireless earbuds. It does not cover the earlier Bose QuietComfort Earbuds from 2020 or Sony WH-1000XM5 over-ear headphones. Bose identifies its current earbuds as the QCEARB24 family, while Sony’s WF-1000XM5 product page describes the competing model.

How the published specifications compare

Decision point Bose QuietComfort Earbuds (current generation) Sony WF-1000XM5
Noise cancellation Adjustable cancellation with Quiet, Aware and Off modes, according to Bose’s product page. Sony describes a dual-processor, multi-microphone noise-canceling system on its product page.
Battery per charge Up to 8.5 hours, per Bose’s current product page. Up to 8 hours with noise canceling on and up to 12 hours with it off, per Sony’s specifications.
Total battery with case Bose’s user guide gives up to 30 hours under its stated test conditions: playback at 75 dB SPL, EQ at zero and Quiet Mode. The product page instead displays up to 31.5 hours. Up to 24 hours total with noise canceling on, according to Sony’s product page.
Water protection IPX4; Bose describes the earbuds as water- and sweat-resistant, per its product page. IPX4-equivalent splash protection, per Sony’s specifications.
Device switching Bluetooth multipoint, listed by Bose on its product page. Multipoint connection, listed in Sony’s specifications.
Audio formats A full codec list is not stated on the Bose product page reviewed. SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3, listed in Sony’s specifications.
Fit components Three eartip sizes and three stability-band sizes, making nine combinations, according to Bose’s product page. Noise-isolation tips are included; sizes are listed in Sony’s specifications.
Case charging Wireless charging case, according to Bose’s product page. USB and wireless charging with the case, according to Sony’s specifications.

These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled comparison. In particular, the battery figures may use different conditions. Bose’s two official case-total figures also differ: its user guide’s explicitly qualified figure is up to 30 hours, while its product page displays up to 31.5 hours.

Noise cancellation: what can—and cannot—be concluded

Both models are designed for active noise cancellation, but their manufacturers’ descriptions do not establish which one reduces noise more effectively. A fair ranking would require comparable independent measurements across the same frequencies and test conditions; no such head-to-head result is established here. Choose based on your own listening priorities and, if possible, try both in the places you expect to use them, such as on a commute or in an office.

#1 Best Overall
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) - Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds with Mic, Immersive Audio, USB-C Charging, Up to 6 Hours Battery, IPX4 Rating, Black
  • WORLD-CLASS NOISE CANCELLATION: The best noise cancellation of any Bose wireless earbuds is now even better than before. ActiveSense technology smooths spikes in surrounding sound, so even in Aware Mode distractions won’t get in the way.
  • CUSTOMTUNE TECHNOLOGY: CustomTune technology analyses your ears and adapts your in-ear headphones to their shape. The result? World-class noise cancellation and custom sound for bigger chills every time you press play.
  • NOISE CONTROL: Quickly adjust the level of noise cancellation without using Modes, including turning it off completely to conserve battery.
  • IMMERSIVE AUDIO: Bose Immersive Audio spatialises what you’re hearing by taking it out of your head and placing it beyond your Bluetooth earbuds. It’s like listening from the acoustic sweet spot, where songs sound like the artist intended.
  • SECURE FIT AND STABILITY: Choose from nine combos of eartips and stability bands to find the snuggest fit for comfortable earbuds. The soft, umbrella-shaped tips seal the opening of your ear to reduce outside noises while stability bands hug them.

Battery life: a small listed edge for Bose

Bose’s up-to-8.5-hour per-charge claim is half an hour longer than Sony’s up-to-8-hour claim with noise canceling on. That is a modest paper advantage, not proof that Bose will last longer in everyday use: the manufacturers’ figures may reflect different test conditions. Sony also lists up to 12 hours with noise canceling off, so that figure is not directly comparable to its ANC-on claim.

For case-inclusive runtime, compare the conditions as well as the totals. Bose’s user guide specifies its test setup for the up-to-30-hour result; Sony’s product page lists up to 24 hours with noise canceling on. Bose’s product page separately displays up to 31.5 hours, so treat that number as a product-page claim rather than silently substituting it for the guide’s stated test figure.

Audio codecs and device compatibility

Sony explicitly lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3. The Bose product page reviewed does not provide an equivalent full codec list, so the available specifications do not establish codec parity. If you care about a particular format, check that both your playback device and earbuds support it; a codec listed for earbuds is not automatically available with every phone, computer or app.

Fit, switching and splash protection

Fit is personal

Bose supplies three eartip sizes and three stability-band sizes. Sony includes noise-isolation tips. Those included options indicate what comes in the box, not which earbuds will feel more secure or comfortable in your ears. A good seal matters for both sound and noise isolation, so try different included sizes and judge comfort over a longer listening session if you can.

Rank #3
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) - Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds with Mic, Immersive Audio, USB-C Charging, Up to 6 Hours Battery, IPX4 Rating, Midnight Violet - Limited Edition Color

Multipoint for two-device use

Both manufacturers list multipoint, which is useful if you want earbuds connected to more than one device. The specifications establish feature availability, not how smoothly each model switches in every setup.

IPX4 means splash resistance, not waterproofing

Both models are listed with IPX4-class protection. That supports use around splashes, but it does not mean either pair is waterproof or suitable for immersion.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Bose if its fit kit suits your ears or its published 8.5-hour per-charge maximum is the more appealing listed figure. Treat that battery number as a manufacturer claim rather than a guaranteed real-world result.
  • Choose Sony if you specifically want its documented codec options—especially LDAC or LC3—and your source device supports the format you intend to use.
  • Decide by trying both if your main concern is noise cancellation or comfort. The published descriptions do not prove a universal ANC or fit winner.
  • Check current listings before buying. Reliable current prices, discounts, stock and color availability are not established by the specifications above and can change.
