Bose headphones buying guide (2026): choose the right QuietComfort for calls, travel and music

Choose the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if you want the broadest feature set: Bose documents its strongest noise-cancellation positioning, an adaptive microphone system, CustomTune, Immersive Audio, Cinema Mode, lossless USB-C audio and flexible device switching. Choose the Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) if you want the newer QuietComfort design and key updates such as Immersive Audio, USB-C audio and improved voice pickup without moving to the Ultra tier.

This guide separates Bose’s documented specifications from subjective sound and call-quality judgments. Battery, microphone and noise-cancellation claims below are Bose claims, not independent laboratory results.

At a glance: which Bose model fits you?

Model Best fit Documented strengths Important qualifications Availability or price information
QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) Frequent callers, travelers and listeners who want every current feature Adaptive microphone system for voice isolation from background noise and wind; Bose’s strongest noise-cancellation positioning; CustomTune; Immersive Audio; Cinema Mode; lossless USB-C digital audio; built-in microphones; around-ear fit; carry case; removable cushions; laptop-to-phone switching without re-pairing Battery varies substantially with ANC and Immersive Audio settings. Sound quality and real-world call performance still require independent testing. Launched at $449 in 2025. Bose announced availability on October 2, 2025.
QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) Buyers who want a simpler, lower-tier QuietComfort choice with the latest design updates Immersive Audio, USB-C audio, Cinema Mode and improved voice pickup, while retaining the QuietComfort line’s comfort and ANC positioning Bose’s supplied comparison does not state battery figures, weight, removable-cushion details or device-switching behavior for this model. Bose lists it as sold from August 2026. Current price is not stated in the supplied specifications.
QuietComfort Headphones Shoppers considering the earlier QuietComfort generation QuietComfort comfort and ANC positioning The supplied material does not establish the newer 2nd Gen features, battery figures or call improvements for this model. Bose lists sales from October 2023. Current price is not stated.
Original QuietComfort Ultra Headphones Owners comparing the previous Ultra generation with the 2nd Gen Ultra feature family, including Immersive Audio Bose stated shorter battery figures than the 2nd Gen. No independent comparative listening or call measurements are available here. Bose’s 2023 specification states up to 24 hours, or 18 hours with Immersive Audio on.

If calls are your deciding factor, start with the Ultra 2nd Gen because Bose specifically describes its microphone system as adapting to surroundings and isolating speech from competing noise and wind. If you mainly want comfortable ANC headphones with newer media features, the QC 2nd Gen is the more straightforward choice. For music and video features, the Ultra 2nd Gen is the most complete option on the documented specifications.

What changes between QuietComfort and QuietComfort Ultra?

Call voice pickup

The Ultra 2nd Gen has Bose’s clearest call-focused specification. Its microphone system is described as adapting to the environment to isolate your voice from background noise and wind, and Bose lists phone calls plus VoIP services such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom and FaceTime. That is a manufacturer description, not proof that every caller will hear you clearly in every street, aircraft cabin or open office.

#1 Best Overall
Bose QuietComfort Headphones - Wireless Bluetooth Headphones, Active Over Ear Noise Cancelling and Mic, USB-C Charging, Deep Bass, Up to 24 Hours of Playtime, Black
  • NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES: Effortlessly combines noise cancellation technology with passive features so you can shut off the outside world, quiet distractions, and take music beyond the beat
  • COMFORTABLE HEADPHONES: Plush over-ear cushions softly hug your ears, while a secure and comfortable padded band gently keeps your studio headphones in place for those extra-long listening sessions
  • 2 LISTENING MODES: These wireless Bluetooth headphones feature Quiet and Aware Modes that let you toggle between full noise cancelling or full awareness of your surroundings for seamless sound control
  • HIGH-FIDELITY AUDIO/EQ CONTROL: Supercharge your favorite tracks with high-fidelity audio and Adjustable EQ that puts you in control of the bass, mid-range, and treble for unmatched bold sound
  • ALL DAY BATTERY LIFE: Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones provide up to 24 hours of battery on a single charge, plus a 15-minute charge via USB-C gives you up to 2.5 hours of additional play time

Bose’s comparison describes the QC 2nd Gen as having improved voice pickup, but it does not provide a test score, wind threshold or side-by-side call result. Treat it as a meaningful feature update rather than a guaranteed professional-grade microphone.

Noise cancellation and awareness modes

Both lines are positioned around Bose’s QuietComfort noise cancellation. The Ultra 2nd Gen is the model Bose positions most strongly for maximum noise reduction and combines that system with Aware and ActiveSense listening options. The practical choice is to use ANC when you want the outside world reduced and an awareness mode when you need to hear surroundings; the exact benefit depends on fit, the noise source and your environment.

Immersive Audio, Cinema Mode and USB-C audio

The Ultra 2nd Gen combines CustomTune, Immersive Audio, Cinema Mode and lossless digital audio over USB-C. CustomTune is part of the model’s documented feature set; Bose does not provide an independent measurement here showing how much it changes frequency response for a particular listener. Immersive Audio and Cinema Mode are processing options you can judge with your own music and video. USB-C audio gives you a wired digital path when a computer or other source supports audio over USB.

The QC 2nd Gen adds Immersive Audio, USB-C audio and Cinema Mode to the standard QuietComfort tier. That narrows the feature gap, but the Ultra remains the only model in this comparison with documented CustomTune and lossless USB-C wording.

Comfort, portability and serviceability

Bose lists the Ultra 2nd Gen as an around-ear headphone with a carry case, USB-C charging, built-in microphones and removable cushions. Bose’s 2025 comparison article puts its weight at approximately 9 ounces. Removable cushions are useful if the pads wear or you want to replace them, but the supplied material does not state a replacement price or a specific replacement procedure.

  • ALL DAY BATTERY LIFE: Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones provide up to 24 hours of battery on a single charge, plus a 15-minute charge via USB-C gives you up to 2.5 hours of additional play time

The QC 2nd Gen is described as retaining QuietComfort comfort and ANC positioning. Bose’s supplied comparison does not state its weight, case dimensions, folding mechanism or cushion-removal details, so do not assume those specifications match the Ultra 2nd Gen.

Best Bose headphones for calls

The QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are the safest documented choice for calls. Bose says the microphone system adjusts to surrounding conditions and works to separate speech from background noise and wind. It also lists compatibility with normal phone calls and VoIP applications including Teams, Zoom and FaceTime.

Set up the headset for a reliable call

  1. Charge first. Use the included USB-C charging connection before an important meeting; a low battery can force a last-minute switch to another device.
  2. Pair with the device that will run the call. In your computer or phone’s Bluetooth settings, select the Bose headset as both the speaker and microphone when the operating system offers separate choices.
  3. Check the application’s own audio menu. In Teams, Zoom or another VoIP program, confirm that the Bose headset is selected for input and output instead of the computer’s internal microphone.
  4. Run a short test call. Ask the other person whether your voice remains understandable while you move near a fan, road or other expected noise source. This tests your actual environment rather than relying only on Bose’s specification.
  5. Use a quieter position when possible. Adaptive processing cannot guarantee studio-like isolation. Wind hitting the microphones, loud machinery and severe reverberation can still affect intelligibility.

The QC 2nd Gen is a sensible lower-tier alternative when you want Bose’s stated improved voice pickup but do not need every Ultra feature. Because no independent call comparison is supplied, choose the Ultra for a higher specification ceiling, not on the assumption that it will outperform it in every room.

Best Bose headphones for travel

For flights and long commutes, weigh four things together: the noise-cancellation mode you will actually use, comfort over several hours, battery in that mode, and how easily you can move between your phone and laptop. The Ultra 2nd Gen is the most fully documented travel package: Bose lists ANC, an around-ear fit, approximately 9-ounce weight, a carry case and device switching without re-pairing.

Plan battery use around your listening mode

Do not use a single headline battery number to plan a trip. The Ultra 2nd Gen’s claimed runtime changes with ANC and Immersive Audio, as shown in the battery table below. If you enable Immersive Audio for a film, allow for the lower figure rather than the ANC-only claim. Turning ANC off gives the longest stated runtime, but that may not be the mode you want on an aircraft.

Pack and wear them for a long flight

  • Carry the supplied case and a USB-C charging cable.
  • Wear the headphones during a trial session before a long flight. Around-ear comfort depends on your head shape, glasses, hair and clamping preference.
  • Keep the cushions clean and dry. The Ultra 2nd Gen has removable cushions, which gives you a documented maintenance option when pads eventually wear.
  • Decide whether you need awareness mode during boarding, announcements or walking. Noise cancellation is not a substitute for paying attention to safety instructions.

Switch between laptop and phone

Bose says the Ultra 2nd Gen can switch between a laptop and phone without re-pairing. That is useful when a meeting arrives while you are listening to a tablet or phone, but the supplied specifications do not define every switching rule or the number of simultaneously remembered devices. The QC 2nd Gen’s switching behavior is not stated in the supplied comparison, so verify it against the current product documentation before buying specifically for a multipoint workflow.

Best Bose headphones for music and video

The Ultra 2nd Gen is the feature-rich music pick because it combines CustomTune, Immersive Audio, Cinema Mode and lossless USB-C digital audio. Those features address different situations:

CustomTune

CustomTune is Bose’s documented personalization feature on the Ultra 2nd Gen. It is intended to account for the individual listener and ear-cup fit, but the supplied material contains no independent measurement showing a universal improvement. Treat it as a reason to audition the Ultra, not as a guarantee that every recording will sound better.

Immersive Audio

Immersive Audio changes the presentation from ordinary headphone playback. It can be appealing for films, live recordings or listeners who prefer a more spacious effect, while some people prefer conventional stereo for concentrated music listening. Because it reduces the Ultra 2nd Gen’s claimed battery life, use it selectively when runtime matters.

Cinema Mode

Bose lists Cinema Mode on both the Ultra 2nd Gen and QC 2nd Gen. The supplied specifications name the mode but do not define its signal processing or promise a particular dialogue, bass or surround result. Try it with the kinds of films you watch rather than assuming the label predicts your preference.

Bose QuietComfort Wireless Noise-Canceling Headphones (Black) (Renewed)
  • LEGENDARY NOISE CANCELLATION: Effortlessly combines noise cancelling headphones technology with passive features so you can shut off the outside world, quiet distractions, and take music beyond the beat
  • PREMIUM COMFORT: Plush earcup cushions softly hug your ears, while a secure and comfortable padded band gently keeps your over ear headphones in place for those extra-long listening sessions
  • ALL DAY BATTERY LIFE: Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones provide up to 24 hours of battery on a single charge, plus a 15-minute charge gives you up to 2.5 hours of additional play time

USB-C digital audio

USB-C audio lets a compatible computer or source send digital sound directly to the headphones. The Ultra 2nd Gen is specifically described as supporting lossless USB-C audio; the QC 2nd Gen is listed with USB-C audio, but the supplied comparison does not repeat the word lossless for that model. A USB cable and a charging cable are not automatically interchangeable for audio on every device, so confirm that your computer supports USB audio output before relying on it.

No independent frequency-response measurements, codec comparison or controlled listening test is supplied. Therefore, it is accurate to call the Ultra the most feature-complete music model, but not to declare it universally the best-sounding Bose headphone.

Battery life: use the number for your mode

Model and condition Bose-stated play time How to interpret it
QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), ANC on and Immersive Audio off Up to 30 hours This is the useful planning figure for a long flight when you want ANC without Immersive Audio.
QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), ANC and Immersive Audio on Up to 23 hours Immersive Audio lowers the stated runtime, so include charging time on longer journeys.
QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), ANC off Up to 45 hours This is the longest Bose-stated figure and assumes ANC is not operating.
Original QuietComfort Ultra Headphones Up to 24 hours; 18 hours with Immersive Audio on Bose’s 2023 figures are included for owners deciding whether the 2nd Gen’s battery update matters.
QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) Not stated in the supplied Bose comparison Do not substitute the Ultra figure when estimating the QC 2nd Gen’s runtime.
QuietComfort Headphones Not stated in the supplied material Check the specification for the exact regional listing you intend to buy.

Every figure above is a Bose maximum, not a guaranteed number of hours in all conditions. Volume, wireless activity, temperature, calls and processing modes can affect actual use; the supplied material does not quantify those effects.

How to choose in five decisions

  1. Start with your main task. Pick the Ultra 2nd Gen for the broadest call, travel and media feature set. Pick the QC 2nd Gen for a simpler QuietComfort purchase with newer-generation additions.
  2. Decide whether adaptive call handling is central. Bose provides the most detailed microphone description for the Ultra 2nd Gen. If calls are occasional, the QC 2nd Gen’s improved voice-pickup claim may be sufficient.
  3. Choose your media processing. Select the Ultra if CustomTune and lossless USB-C wording matter. Select either 2nd Gen model if Immersive Audio, Cinema Mode and USB-C audio cover your needs.
  4. Calculate battery from your mode. Use the exact ANC and Immersive Audio row that matches your habits; do not plan a trip from the longest number if you intend to keep ANC and Immersive Audio enabled.
  5. Check physical fit and logistics. The Ultra’s documented package includes an around-ear design, approximately 9-ounce weight, carry case and removable cushions. Obtain the QC 2nd Gen’s exact weight, case and cushion details from its current listing if those factors decide the purchase.

Launch dates, price context and what is not established

Bose announced the QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) on September 10, 2025, announced availability for October 2, 2025, and gave a $449 launch price. A launch price is historical; it does not establish the current price, regional tax treatment, discounting or stock status in 2026. The QC 2nd Gen is listed by Bose as sold from August 2026, while the earlier QC model is listed from October 2023.

The supplied Bose material does not establish current retail prices for the QC 2nd Gen, QC or original Ultra, nor does it provide independent measurements for attenuation, microphone intelligibility, frequency response, distortion, comfort or durability. It also does not give a complete device-memory or multipoint specification for every model. Those gaps matter if you need a measured performance guarantee rather than a feature-based choice.

Troubleshooting common buying and setup mistakes

You expected the longest battery figure but got less

Check whether ANC and Immersive Audio are both enabled. On the Ultra 2nd Gen, Bose publishes separate maximums for those modes. Recalculate using the row that matches your settings instead of treating the longest claim as universal.

Your voice sounds distant on a meeting

Confirm that the meeting application selected the Bose microphone, not the laptop microphone. Move away from direct wind and loud machinery, then make a short test call. Bose’s adaptive system is designed to address competing noise, but the claim does not promise perfect isolation in every acoustic environment.

You cannot get USB-C audio

Verify that the computer or phone supports USB audio output and that the operating system recognizes the headphones as an audio device. A USB-C connector alone does not prove that a particular port or cable carries digital audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Ultra and QC labels are confusing

Use the generation and model name together. The QC Ultra 2nd Gen is the September 2025 Ultra model with the documented 30-hour ANC-on, Immersive-off maximum and expanded media features. The QC 2nd Gen is the newer standard QuietComfort model listed from August 2026. The unqualified QC model is the earlier generation listed from October 2023.

Bottom line

For one Bose headphone that covers calls, flights and feature-rich music playback, choose the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) on Bose’s documented specifications. Choose the QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) when you value the updated QuietComfort platform and core media additions more than the Ultra’s broader feature set. Whichever model you choose, match battery claims to your actual listening mode and treat Bose’s microphone, ANC and sound descriptions as manufacturer claims rather than independent test results.
