A Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) and a superfluid describe different properties. A BEC is a macroscopic population of bosons occupying one quantum state. Superfluidity is a fluid’s ability to support flow without ordinary dissipation. The two often appear together in ultracold Bose gases, but neither term is a synonym for the other, and condensate and superfluid fractions can differ greatly.
The short answer: state occupation versus fluid behavior
The easiest way to keep the concepts separate is to ask two different questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- BEC: How are the particles distributed among quantum states?
- Superfluidity: How does the fluid respond when it flows, rotates or is disturbed?
Those questions can have related answers in the same experiment, but they are not the same question. A condensate is identified through the system’s quantum population and coherence. A superfluid is identified through a nondissipative flow response, such as a persistent current or a measured superfluid fraction.
In a weakly interacting ultracold Bose gas, the two fractions may track one another closely. That practical overlap is why popular explanations sometimes treat a BEC as automatically superfluid. Interactions, disorder, dimensionality and the details of the experiment can separate them, however. The labels should therefore be applied to the property that has actually been measured.

A useful shorthand is: BEC asks how particles occupy quantum states; superfluidity asks how the fluid behaves under motion. This is a teaching aid, not a claim that either property can be inferred from a single universal test. A paper can establish condensation without establishing a superfluid response, or demonstrate a superfluid component without reporting the same fraction as the condensate fraction.
What a Bose–Einstein condensate describes
A macroscopic population in one quantum state
Bose–Einstein condensation is a quantum-state occupation phenomenon. Under suitable conditions, many bosons accumulate in a single one-particle quantum state. Instead of behaving as a collection whose particles are spread across many distinguishable states, the system develops a macroscopically occupied state with shared quantum coherence.
“Macroscopic” is the important word. Ordinary quantum systems can contain particles in particular states, but a condensate involves a population large enough to affect measurements on the whole sample. The BEC label says that this collective occupation has occurred; by itself, it does not state how the sample will carry current or respond to a moving obstacle.
The particles do not become literally motionless, nor does every atom have to be identical in every measurable respect. The statement is about a large population associated with one quantum state. A sample may still contain atoms outside that state, especially when temperature, interactions or other conditions produce a normal component. Thus, “condensed” is a statement about the population structure of the gas, not a claim that all particles have the same classical velocity.
What experimenters look for
Measurements that reveal condensation commonly examine a momentum or velocity distribution and estimate a condensate fraction. A sharply concentrated, macroscopically occupied component in the distribution is evidence for the condensate state. The exact analysis depends on the gas, trap and imaging method, so a quoted condensate fraction must always be tied to its particular system and conditions.
Coherence measurements can provide complementary evidence. The important interpretive point is that a condensate fraction is a population estimate: it asks what portion of the sample is associated with the condensate state. It is not automatically a transport measurement, and it should not be relabeled as a superfluid fraction merely because both are reported as percentages.
What the BEC label does not establish
Calling a sample a BEC does not, without further evidence, prove that its entire mass is superfluid. It does not specify the amount of dissipation under a particular drive, the response to rotation, or whether disorder has reduced the superfluid component. Those are flow questions and require their own diagnostics.

Nondissipative flow and response
Superfluidity is a property of fluid behavior. A superfluid component can sustain flow without the ordinary dissipative processes associated with viscosity. In experiments, researchers may test whether motion persists, how the fluid responds to rotation, or how much of the sample participates in a superfluid response.
Persistent flow is a particularly recognizable signature. If circulation remains after the initial drive is removed, the observation supports the conclusion that the relevant component is superfluid. Other tests use a moving perturbation, a rotating container or a measured superfluid fraction. There is no single measurement that applies identically to every material or geometry.
The phrase “without ordinary dissipation” should also be read in context. It refers to the response measured in a specified apparatus and under specified conditions, not to an assertion that every disturbance is harmless or that every part of a sample responds identically. Experimental geometry, temperature, interactions and disorder all matter when deciding what portion of the fluid is participating.
Superfluidity is not simply “all particles in one state”
The superfluid label concerns collective flow, not just the occupancy of a one-particle state. A system can have a condensate component and a separate normal component. The size of the superfluid fraction therefore need not equal the condensate fraction, even when both are measured in the same sample.

This distinction is especially important when reading a result expressed as a percentage. “Ten percent condensate” and “ten percent superfluid” answer different questions unless the authors have independently shown that the two quantities coincide for that system. The measurement method and the physical conditions should always accompany the number.

Why the two phenomena often occur together
Both effects become possible in quantum fluids under conditions where thermal motion and interactions allow collective quantum behavior to emerge. In an ultracold Bose gas, a condensate provides a coherent macroscopic state, while interactions among the atoms can support collective flow. In a weakly interacting gas, calculations and measurements can show condensate and superfluid fractions that follow one another closely.
Close tracking is a relationship, not a definition. The condensate tells you about one-particle state occupation. Superfluidity tells you about the fluid’s response to motion. A change in interactions, geometry, disorder or dimensionality can affect those properties differently. Treating one as a guaranteed proxy for the other can therefore produce the wrong interpretation of an experiment.
Interactions
Interactions determine how particles move collectively and how excitations carry momentum. They can make a condensate robustly support flow, or they can produce a measurable distinction between the population in the condensate state and the part that responds superfluidly.
Recommended Free Tools
For that reason, two gases with similar-looking condensate signatures need not have identical transport behavior. Conversely, a flow experiment should not be summarized only by saying that a condensate was present. The interaction regime is part of the explanation for why the two properties overlap or separate.
Disorder
Spatial disorder can disrupt flow even when a condensate remains present. A peer-reviewed study of a disordered Bose gas found a regime of strong disorder in which the superfluid fraction was smaller than the condensate fraction. That result is specific to the model and conditions studied, but it directly demonstrates why the two fractions are not definitions of the same quantity.
The practical lesson is not that disorder always creates the same numerical gap. It is that a condensate measurement alone cannot determine how efficiently the sample supports flow when the environment is inhomogeneous or strongly disordered.
Dimensionality and geometry
The relationship also depends on whether the fluid is effectively three-dimensional, two-dimensional or confined in another way, as well as on the shape of the trap or container. A flow test in a ring, for example, probes circulation in a geometry designed to make persistent current visible; it is not the same measurement as examining a momentum distribution.

A velocity distribution may be the clearest route to a condensate estimate, while a closed path can make persistent circulation especially clear. Neither setup turns one observable into the other.
The most instructive example: liquid helium
The American Physical Society’s discussion of helium gives a memorable numerical comparison. At low temperature, liquid helium can be nearly 100% superfluid while its condensate fraction is only about 10%.
These are approximate fractions for the low-temperature liquid-helium context described by the APS, not universal constants and not values that should be transferred to every Bose system. The example matters because it separates the two ideas in one material: most of the liquid can participate in the superfluid response even though only a much smaller fraction is assigned to the condensate state.

Helium therefore answers the question “Is superfluidity just another name for condensation?” with a clear no. The two properties can coexist, but their measured fractions need not match.

Ultracold atomic gases: BEC and persistent currents
The 1995 dilute-gas condensate
Cornell and Wieman’s group at JILA created the first dilute-gas BEC in June 1995 using rubidium atoms. NIST’s account of that historical experiment reported cooling the atoms to less than 170 billionths of a degree above absolute zero. That temperature belongs to the particular 1995 demonstration; it is not a universal threshold that every BEC must reach.
Wolfgang Ketterle also made seminal contributions to BEC experiments. The 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics recognized Eric Cornell, Wolfgang Ketterle and Carl Wieman for achieving BEC in dilute alkali-atom gases and for early fundamental studies of condensate properties.
The historical achievement made a previously predicted state visible in a dilute, controllable laboratory system. It did not collapse the distinction between condensation and superfluidity. Instead, it gave experimenters a platform in which quantum-state occupation and collective flow could be investigated in related but separately testable ways.
A flow-focused experiment
In 2007, NIST reported an experiment in which an ultracold atomic gas was held in a toroidal, or ring-shaped, trap and exhibited a persistent current. The report described persistent flow as a hallmark of superfluidity. The result is useful as an illustration of the flow side of the distinction: it demonstrates a superfluid response, rather than serving as the definition of a BEC.
A ring trap makes circulation especially visible because the atoms can continue moving around a closed path. The observation does not mean that every condensate automatically has the same flow behavior. It shows why superfluidity needs a response or transport measurement in addition to evidence of condensation.
When describing this kind of result, it is precise to say that the experiment observed persistent flow in an ultracold gas held in a toroidal trap. It is less precise to treat the observation as proof that the condensate fraction and superfluid fraction are identical. The first statement reports the measured behavior; the second adds a conclusion that requires separate evidence.
How to interpret an experiment or article
When a paper or news report uses both terms, identify which quantity was actually measured. The following sequence prevents most misunderstandings:
- Find the population measurement. Look for a momentum distribution, velocity distribution, coherence measurement or stated condensate fraction. These support a claim about BEC.
- Find the flow measurement. Look for persistent circulation, a response to rotation, motion past an obstacle, or a stated superfluid fraction. These support a claim about superfluidity.
- Check the system. Note whether the sample is liquid helium, a dilute atomic gas, a disordered model, or another geometry. Fractions from one system cannot be treated as universal.
- Check the conditions. Temperature, interaction strength, disorder and dimensionality can alter the relationship between the two properties.
- Keep the fractions separate. A condensate fraction is not automatically a superfluid fraction, even when both are reported as percentages.
- Check what “flow” means in context. Persistent circulation, rotational response and motion past a perturbation are related tests, but they are not interchangeable descriptions of every experiment.
- Match the strength of the wording to the evidence. Say that a sample shows condensation when the population evidence supports that claim, and reserve “superfluid” for a demonstrated or explicitly calculated flow response.
Common misconceptions
“A BEC is a superfluid.”
Sometimes a BEC is also superfluid, especially in weakly interacting ultracold Bose gases. The statement is too broad if it is meant as a definition or guarantee. Superfluidity must be established through a flow response, and the relevant fraction can differ from the condensate fraction.
“Superfluid means every atom occupies one state.”
Superfluidity does not require that wording. It describes the behavior of a fluid component under motion or perturbation. The helium comparison shows that a large superfluid fraction can coexist with a much smaller condensate fraction.

“The percentage in a table is a universal constant.”
Neither the approximately 10% helium condensate fraction nor the nearly 100% helium superfluid fraction is a universal number. Both are approximate values attached to the low-temperature liquid-helium discussion. Percentages in atomic gases and theoretical models likewise depend on the stated conditions.
“The 1995 temperature is the BEC threshold.”
The reported value of less than 170 billionths of a degree above absolute zero describes the first rubidium-gas demonstration. It is a historical experimental figure, not a single temperature threshold that applies to all species, densities, traps or interaction strengths.

“If both fractions are percentages, they must add up or match.”
They are percentages of different physical quantities. A condensate fraction refers to population in the condensate state, while a superfluid fraction refers to participation in a nondissipative response. They may be close in one weakly interacting gas and far apart in another system, so arithmetic comparison without context is misleading.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Historical context and why the distinction matters
Satyendra Nath Bose’s work in the 1920s led Albert Einstein to develop the prediction of Bose–Einstein condensation. Decades later, advances in cooling and trapping made a dilute atomic-gas condensate possible. The JILA result in June 1995 and the subsequent Nobel recognition in 2001 established BEC as an experimentally accessible state in dilute alkali-atom gases.
The history also helps explain why the terminology can become blurred. Early BEC experiments made a striking new quantum state visible, while superfluidity had already been associated with unusual flow in quantum liquids. Modern ultracold-atom experiments can display both properties in one apparatus, encouraging shorthand that hides their separate definitions.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences’ 2001 Nobel announcement described the achievement as causing atoms to “sing in unison” and discovering “a new state of matter, the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC).” In NIST’s account of the first rubidium condensate, JILA physicist Eric Wieman said, “It really is a new state of matter.” Both quotations refer to the condensate achievement; neither changes the separate experimental meaning of superfluidity.

Is every Bose–Einstein condensate a superfluid?
No. BEC and superfluidity often coexist in weakly interacting ultracold Bose gases, but condensation alone does not establish nondissipative flow. A flow response or an independently determined superfluid fraction is needed.
Can something be superfluid without having a large condensate fraction?
Yes. Low-temperature liquid helium is the clearest example in the cited comparison: it can be nearly 100% superfluid while its condensate fraction is about 10%. The values are approximate and specific to that helium context.
What is the simplest experimental sign of a BEC?
Experimenters commonly inspect a momentum or velocity distribution and estimate a condensate fraction. A macroscopically occupied, concentrated component supports a condensation claim, with the exact interpretation depending on the trap, gas and imaging method.
What is the simplest experimental sign of superfluidity?
A persistent current is a recognizable signature. Other experiments examine response to rotation or a perturbation, or determine a superfluid fraction. The appropriate test depends on the material and geometry.

Why can disorder make the fractions different?
Disorder can interfere with collective flow while leaving a condensate population present. A study of a disordered Bose gas found a strong-disorder regime in which the superfluid fraction was smaller than the condensate fraction. That result is condition-specific, not a universal numerical rule.

Why do articles sometimes use the terms as if they were synonyms?
Many ultracold Bose-gas experiments display both a condensate and superfluid behavior, and the fractions can track closely in a weakly interacting regime. That practical overlap encourages shorthand. Precise writing still identifies whether the evidence concerns state occupation, flow response or both.
A practical decision rule
If you need one rule for writing, reading or explaining results, use this:
- Use BEC when your evidence concerns macroscopic occupation of a quantum state and its coherence.
- Use superfluid when your evidence concerns nondissipative flow or a measured response to motion, rotation or perturbation.
- Use both terms only when both properties are supported, and state whether their fractions coincide in the specific system.
This wording remains accurate across the two most familiar examples: ultracold atomic gases, where the properties often overlap, and liquid helium, where the quoted fractions can be dramatically different.
Bottom line
A Bose–Einstein condensate is about which quantum state the particles occupy; superfluidity is about how a fluid moves. They are closely related in many ultracold Bose gases, but they are not interchangeable. The right interpretation depends on the measurement, the fraction being reported, and the system’s interactions, disorder, dimensionality and experimental conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Bose–Einstein condensate automatically a superfluid?
No. They often coexist, especially in weakly interacting ultracold Bose gases, but superfluidity requires evidence of nondissipative flow or a measured superfluid response.
Can the condensate fraction and superfluid fraction be different?
Yes. They measure different properties. In low-temperature liquid helium, the condensate fraction is about 10% while the superfluid fraction can be nearly 100%.
How is a BEC detected?
Researchers commonly analyze a momentum or velocity distribution, coherence and condensate fraction. The exact diagnostic depends on the gas, trap and imaging method.

How is superfluidity detected?
Typical evidence includes persistent current, response to rotation or a perturbation, or a measured superfluid fraction.
What did the 1995 BEC experiment achieve?
Cornell and Wieman’s JILA group created the first dilute-gas BEC in June 1995 using rubidium. NIST reported cooling the atoms to less than 170 billionths of a degree above absolute zero.
Why does the helium example matter?
It demonstrates directly that condensation and superfluidity are not synonyms: a large superfluid fraction can coexist with a much smaller condensate fraction.
The Bottom Line
In brief: BEC describes macroscopic occupation of a quantum state; superfluidity describes nondissipative fluid response. They can occur together, but their fractions, measurements and physical meanings remain distinct.
