The Bosch SMS63M28AU is a discontinued Australian-market dishwasher, so treat it as a used or confirmed remaining-stock purchase—not a current model with assured availability. Its headline specifications are 14 place settings, six programs, a 42 dB noise rating, and claimed use of 225 kWh of energy per year and 12.3 litres of water per wash. Whether it is worth buying now depends more on fit, condition, drying expectations, and parts access than on those historical ratings.
Is the Bosch SMS63M28AU worth buying?
It may suit someone who finds a well-maintained unit at a sensible price and can verify that it fits the kitchen. CHOICE lists the model as discontinued, and neither the old manufacturer brochure nor a retailer listing establishes current stock. Confirm availability and the exact model suffix before committing.

The published specifications make it a full-size, 14-place-setting machine with six programs and a 42 dB rating. Those figures do not establish present-day washing performance or the condition of an individual used appliance. CHOICE’s public page identifies the product and its specifications, but does not expose the detailed test scores, washing or drying outcomes, or the year tested. It is not possible to give a test-based performance verdict from that public information.
Capacity, programs, and rated resource use
CHOICE and Bosch’s historical Australian brochure identify the SMS63M28AU as a freestanding stainless-steel dishwasher rated for 14 place settings. Bosch’s brochure lists six programs, RackMatic Plus and VarioFlex rack features, and “Super silence 42dB.” These are product specifications, not a guarantee of how quiet or convenient a particular installation will feel.

| Specification | Published figure | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 14 place settings | CHOICE and Bosch historical Australian brochure |
| Programs | 6 | Bosch historical Australian brochure; also listed by Appliances Online |
| Energy rating and use | 4 stars; 225 kWh/year | Australian specification figures listed by CHOICE and Bosch; rated figures, not a household-use prediction |
| Water rating and use | 4.5 stars; 12.3 L per wash | Australian specification figures listed by CHOICE and Bosch; rated figures for the relevant program basis |
| Noise | 42 dB | Bosch brochure and Appliances Online listing |
| Warranty | 2 years | CHOICE and Appliances Online list this specification; it does not establish warranty coverage for a used unit |
Energy and water figures are published ratings, not a promise of an individual household’s consumption. Avoid direct comparisons with newer dishwasher labels unless the testing standard and program basis are aligned.
Dimensions: check the actual opening and plumbing
Published height figures differ. CHOICE lists the appliance as 82 cm high, while Bosch’s historical brochure and Appliances Online give 845 mm full height and 815 mm with the top removed. All three sources give a width and depth of 600 mm. The figures may reflect different conventions or specifications; do not assume the 82 cm entry is interchangeable with the brochure’s full-height measurement.

Measure the installed machine and the available opening, including rear hose and pipe clearance. One owner in the shared ProductReview listing said their installation projected about 4 cm farther than their previous dishwasher and suggested rear pipes as a possible reason; that is an individual installation report, not a standard dimension. Appliances Online also says the anti-flood hose protector requires a minimum 70 mm cabinetry hole.
Does the quick wash dry dishes?
No drying portion is included in the quick wash. In response to an owner review, Bosch stated: “Please keep in mind that the quick wash doesn’t have a drying portion included in the cycle.” A load that is still wet after that program is not, by itself, evidence of a fault.

The same owner said the 29-minute program cleaned normally soiled dishes, but they remained wet. ProductReview hosts reports for several closely related SMS models on one shared page, so not every review there can be attributed to the SMS63M28AU. Another reviewer in that grouped listing described perceived capacity as poor compared with an Asko and reported poor drying of plastic items. These are old individual accounts, not representative survey results or controlled test findings.
What to inspect before buying a used unit
- Confirm identity. Read the rating plate and record the exact E-Nr/model suffix. The support pages cover SMS63M28AU/85 and SMS63M28AU/93; do not assume every part fits every suffix.
- Check fit before delivery. Measure the available height, width, and depth and allow for rear plumbing, hose routing, and the installation hole required by the anti-flood hose protector.
- Run a complete cycle if possible. Check for leaks, drainage problems, unusual noise, and whether the controls and racks operate correctly. Do not judge drying by the quick wash alone.
- Ask about age, service history, and warranty. The published two-year warranty specification does not tell you whether a particular used machine remains covered or whether coverage transfers.
- Check parts before relying on a repair. Search support using the exact E-Nr and suffix, and verify fit and availability for the specific component before purchase.
Manuals and spare parts
Bosch support pages provide manuals and replacement-parts access for variants SMS63M28AU/85 and SMS63M28AU/93. The presence of a support page does not prove that a particular basket, hose, or other replacement part is available or compatible with every appliance bearing the SMS63M28AU name. Match the rating-plate E-Nr and suffix when searching and confirm the part fit directly.
