The Bosch SMS50D08AU is a discontinued Serie 4 freestanding dishwasher, so this review is most useful if you are considering a used unit or verified remaining stock—not shopping for a model you can assume is readily available new. Its published specifications describe a 14-place-setting machine with five programs, but the public independent-review listing does not reveal its expert score or detailed lab results.
What the SMS50D08AU offers
Bosch’s 2017 product specification sheet describes the SMS50D08AU as an anti-fingerprint stainless-steel, freestanding dishwasher with a Polinox inner tub and capacity for 14 international place settings. Its dimensions are 845 × 600 × 600 mm (H × W × D), or 815 mm high with the top removed. CHOICE lists rounded dimensions of 85 × 60 × 60 cm. Those figures are useful for screening, but confirm installation clearances and requirements against the manual for the appliance’s full E-Nr suffix and the actual space in your kitchen.

Programs and rack features
The specification sheet lists five programs: Pots and Pans 70°C, Auto 45–65°C, Eco 45°C, Quick Wash 45°C and Pre-Rinse. VarioSpeed is an additional option; Bosch says it can reduce wash time by up to 50%. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result in the public material available for this model.

Other listed features include a height-adjustable upper basket, folding racks, a cutlery basket, delay start adjustable from 1 to 24 hours, and an electronic rinse-aid indicator. Bosch also lists AquaSensor and LoadSensor features, heat-exchanger drying, a three-stage self-cleaning filter system and a tablet dosing feature.

Published consumption and noise figures
Bosch’s 2017 sheet gives water use of 13.4 litres per wash and energy consumption of 230 kWh, both based on the Eco 45°C program. It lists four-star energy and water ratings, which CHOICE also repeats as claimed ratings. These are published specifications, not measurements for every program or independent test results. The sheet states a noise level of 46 dB.
What independent testing does—and does not—show
CHOICE marks the SMS50D08AU as discontinued. Its public listing does not disclose the expert rating, washing and drying scores, measured resource use, noise test, or year tested; those details are member-only. The published specifications therefore cannot establish how the dishwasher performed in CHOICE’s tests.

Buying a used or remaining-stock SMS50D08AU
- Confirm the exact model. Read the rating plate and record the full E-Nr, including its suffix. Use that identifier to find the matching manual, installation instructions and parts information on Bosch’s support page for SMS50D08AU/01, or search Bosch support for the exact suffix shown on your unit. Support pages cover production variants, so a similar model name alone is not enough to confirm compatibility.
- Inspect condition and ask for a demonstration. For a used unit, ask the seller to show a complete cycle or, at minimum, that it powers on, fills, drains and does not visibly leak. Inspect the door seal, racks, baskets and controls, and ask what faults or repairs the seller knows about. These checks assess the specific appliance; they do not predict its remaining life.
- Measure the opening and verify installation needs. Check width, depth and available height, including whether removing the top is appropriate for your installation. The listed appliance dimensions do not replace the exact clearance, water-connection and electrical requirements in the correct installation instructions.
- Check warranty and service before paying. Bosch’s sheet lists a two-year warranty, but coverage depends on the purchase date and applicable terms; do not assume it transfers to a later owner or still applies to old stock. Ask for dated proof of purchase and confirm local repair support and parts availability. The existence of a support or parts page does not establish current stock for a particular component.
- Evaluate the total deal, not the historic price. CHOICE shows a historical price of $1,189, not a current asking price. Compare the actual seller’s price and condition with the cost and availability of installation, repairs and a replacement if the unit fails.
Who should consider it?
The SMS50D08AU may suit someone who needs a 60 cm freestanding dishwasher, values the listed 14-place capacity and can verify the particular unit’s condition, fit and support. It is a poor choice to buy on specification-sheet figures alone if you need independently verified performance, assured replacement-part availability or a new appliance with current warranty coverage. No current competitor has been assessed here, so these facts do not establish that this model is better or worse than a currently sold dishwasher.
