Anime-canon episodes are optional for a shortcut, but they may provide character development and information later referenced by adapted episodes.
How Boruto episode labels work
“Filler” is not an official studio category. It is an editorial classification used by viewing guides, and different lists can disagree because the anime adapts more than the main Boruto manga. Its source material includes the Naruto spin-off manga, official novels, Naruto: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring, Boruto: Naruto the Movie and original anime storylines.

Anime Filler List separates episodes into three practical groups:
- Manga canon: episodes adapted from the Boruto manga, related manga, or official novels.
- Mixed canon/filler: episodes that combine adapted material with anime-original scenes or plot.
- Anime canon: original episodes that are not direct manga adaptations but may contain information referenced by manga-adapted episodes.
The guide’s definition of anime canon is important: these episodes are not simply disposable padding. They can explain relationships, introduce characters, or establish details that make later adapted episodes easier to follow. If your only goal is to reach the manga-derived plot quickly, you can leave them out; if you want the anime’s fuller continuity, keep them.

Mixed episodes 1 and 176
Do not remove episode 1 or episode 176 from a strict route. Both are marked mixed canon/filler, meaning each combines adapted material with anime-original content. Skipping a mixed episode can remove a canon scene even when much of the episode is not a direct adaptation.
Pure filler episodes you can skip
For a route designed to reach the manga-derived plot as quickly as possible, these are the lowest-risk skips:

- 112–114
- 116–140
- 152–156
- 172
- 209
- 224
- 227
- 232–281
That list contains 102 episodes under the Anime Filler List and Radio Times classifications. The long 232–281 block is especially significant: it covers 50 consecutive episodes, so skipping it produces the largest time saving in one step. If you are watching with friends or using an episode guide that assigns different labels, check the episode number before pressing skip because classifications are editorial and can change between guides.
Anime-canon episodes: optional, not automatically worthless
Anime-canon episodes are the main source of disagreement among Boruto watch lists. They are not direct manga adaptations, but the classification guide reserves the label for non-adapted material that contains information referenced in adapted episodes. That makes them different from pure filler in terms of continuity risk.

When to keep them
- Keep them if this is your first complete anime viewing and you want the relationships and world-building to develop naturally.
- Keep the episodes immediately before a manga-canon block when you want the anime’s setup and connective scenes.
- Keep them if you dislike abrupt jumps in character status, locations or alliances.
When skipping is reasonable
Skipping anime canon is reasonable when you have already seen the anime, are moving from the manga to its animated adaptation, or want only the shortest defensible route to the central manga plot. Start with the manga-canon and mixed lists, then add any anime-canon block if a later episode feels unclear.

Choose the route that matches your goal
| Route | Watch | Skip | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fastest defensible route | All manga-canon episodes plus 1 and 176 | All listed anime canon and pure filler | Readers who want the manga-derived plot with the least viewing time. |
| Balanced route | Manga canon, 1 and 176, plus anime-canon arcs that interest you or lead into a major adapted block | Pure filler and any optional anime-canon material you do not need | Viewers who want context without committing to every episode. |
| Complete route | Episodes 1–293 in broadcast order | None | First-time viewers who want the entire television continuity. |
There is no single correct route. The practical distinction is not “canon versus bad episodes”; it is how much anime-original continuity you want to retain and how much time you are willing to spend.

How to use the list without losing your place
- Decide your route before starting. Select fastest, balanced or complete viewing so you do not change standards halfway through an arc.
- Mark the episode ranges you will watch. Save the manga-canon list and add episodes 1 and 176. For a balanced route, also mark the anime-canon ranges you want.
- Check the number, not only the title. Streaming services sometimes use different title translations, split seasons or inconsistent season numbering. The episode number is the reliable reference.
- Skip whole pure-filler ranges when convenient. The listed ranges are classified as pure filler, so you do not need to sample every episode before moving on.
- Resume at the next listed watch episode. After a skip, begin with the next manga-canon or mixed episode in numerical order.
- Backtrack only when continuity is unclear. If a character, location or relationship appears without enough explanation, return to the preceding anime-canon block rather than abandoning the route.
Why different Boruto filler lists disagree
Most disagreements come from the definition of canon rather than from arithmetic. A manga-only list may call every non-manga episode filler. A broader guide may separate anime canon because the episode contains information that later adapted material uses. Both systems can be internally consistent while giving different skip recommendations.
Boruto’s adaptation history makes a simple binary label especially limiting. The television series incorporates the main manga, a Naruto spin-off manga, the movie story, official novels and original anime plots. An episode can therefore be non-manga in origin while still functioning as continuity for the television version.
Use the labels as a decision tool:
- Lowest continuity risk: skip only episodes explicitly classified as pure filler.
- Moderate continuity risk: skip anime canon when you accept that some setup and character context will be missing.
- Highest compression: watch only manga canon plus mixed episodes, then consult an earlier anime-canon block if a later scene is confusing.
Where the current list ends
The first part of the television anime ends at episode 293, which aired on March 26, 2023. A second part was announced as in development. This guide therefore treats episode 293 as the endpoint for Part 1. If Part 2 has been released since that announcement, its episodes are outside the list above and should be checked separately before using this route.
The anime premiered on TV Tokyo on April 5, 2017. DVD releases exist, but edition, region, language, price and availability vary, so those details should be verified from the specific release or service you plan to use.
Bottom line for a manga-focused viewer
Watch the manga-canon ranges and mixed episodes 1 and 176. Skip the 102 episodes classified as pure filler. Treat anime-canon episodes as optional rather than automatically disposable: omit them for speed, or keep them when character development and anime continuity matter more than the shortest route.
