An Oct. 3 Associated Press-NORC poll found deep dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump and Republicans, while few registered voters thought either party could solve important problems or help people like them. Democrats appear better positioned on cost of living and healthcare, but that advantage is set against broad distrust.
“Bordering on angry” works as a description of the mood, not as a measured poll category or a verified quotation. The available findings show frustration; they do not establish that exact phrase as something voters said or pollsters measured.
What is driving voters as the midterms approach?
Affordability and the economy dominate the clearest available survey of voter priorities, though those figures come from July rather than October. Pew Research Center surveyed 3,554 U.S. adults from July 6–12, 2026, including 2,779 registered voters. It asked registered voters which single issue they most wanted congressional candidates in their district to discuss.

The figures reflect a question about what voters most wanted candidates to discuss, not a ranking of which party they trust to handle each issue. They are also a July snapshot, not a current October reading.

Which party has an edge on the issues?
The answer changes by issue and by survey measure. Pew’s July survey asked registered voters which party they agreed with more on policy. The newer AP-NORC reporting, published Oct. 3, found Democrats better placed on cost-of-living and healthcare handling, while also finding that few voters trusted either party to solve important problems.

The Pew percentages show each party’s share agreeing with it on a given issue; they do not add to 100%, and the remaining respondents may have disagreed, been unsure or given another answer. Together, the findings point to an uneven issue map rather than a single party advantage across every concern.

How much is Trump shaping voters’ choices?
In Pew’s July survey, 42% of registered voters said they viewed their congressional vote as a vote against Trump, 22% as a vote for him, and 35% said he was not much of a factor. Those national figures conceal a sharp partisan split: 81% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters described their vote as against Trump. Half of Republican and Republican-leaning voters said Trump was not much of a factor, while 44% viewed their vote as for him.
The same Pew survey found 43% of registered voters would back a Democratic congressional candidate if the election were held then, compared with 37% for a Republican; 20% were unsure or named another candidate. Both the candidate preference and the Trump-related responses are July findings. They should not be presented as October polling or treated as a forecast of the Nov. 3 result.

What does Trump’s campaign activity signal?
Associated Press reporting on Oct. 1 said Trump was campaigning in heavily Republican areas to raise lagging GOP enthusiasm. The story also cited an AP-NORC poll in which 26% of U.S. adults approved of Trump’s handling of the economy, a new low in that polling series. That is an approval finding reported by AP, not an estimate of how many votes Republicans will lose.
The campaign backdrop includes war with Iran as well as discontent about the economy, according to the AP report. The figures available here do not quantify how much either issue is changing individual races.

Does the national mood predict who will control Congress?
No. A national registered-voter preference can describe the political climate, but it cannot establish which party will win the House or Senate. District boundaries, candidates, turnout and local concerns all matter to individual contests; national dissatisfaction is not itself a seat forecast.
Cook Political Report’s site lists House, Senate and governor race analysis, a polling aggregator and a weekly battleground issue tracker. Its recent listings included race ratings dated Sept. 23–Oct. 1, 2026. Those resources can help readers follow individual contests, but the findings summarized here do not provide a complete, independently verified projection of control of Congress.

Which other issues could matter locally?
Immigration enforcement and transgender inclusion also appear in the wider campaign conversation. The Week’s Sept. 2, 2026, issue overview places them alongside cost of living and notes that the issues’ importance can vary across districts and communities. That is a secondary overview, not a substitute for local polling or evidence about a particular candidate’s campaign.
For voters assessing a local race, the useful questions are specific: What issue is the candidate emphasizing? What position have they taken? And is there district-level evidence that voters prioritize it? A national poll cannot answer those questions for every community.
What the “angry” framing gets right—and what it leaves out
The latest AP-NORC reporting supports a picture of dissatisfaction with Trump and Republicans, alongside doubts about both parties’ ability to deliver. It also describes a Democratic opening on living costs and healthcare. But the July Pew data show Republican advantages on immigration and crime, near-even judgments on economic policy, and sharply different views of Trump among Democratic- and Republican-leaning voters.
So the final-month picture is not simply that voters have switched sides. Economic frustration creates an opening, but issue-by-issue differences and skepticism toward both parties make the national mood an uncertain guide to individual races.
