BOOX Tappy is the safer choice for a BOOX e-reader. It has a named manufacturer, published dimensions, three control modes and an explicit compatibility requirement for BOOX devices running firmware V4.2 or later with Bluetooth support. “PageTurner Ring” is not one standardized product: marketplace listings use that name for several unbranded rings with different controls and specifications. Choose a ring only after checking the exact listing and confirming that its page-turn commands work with your particular reader and app.
Neither accessory is universally compatible. In a June 2026 hands-on test, Tappy controlled an Android phone, paired with a Kobo Libra Colour but did not turn its pages, and was not detected by three Kindle devices. Bluetooth pairing alone is therefore not proof that an e-reader will respond.

What you are actually comparing
This comparison puts a defined accessory against a product category. BOOX Tappy is a specific remote sold by BOOX. A “PageTurner Ring” can refer to different unbranded marketplace products; two listings cited for this comparison do not even use the same model name. That difference affects how confidently you can predict fit, controls, charging and returns.

The BOOX Official Store describes Tappy as a compact wireless remote for reading, browsing and multimedia control. It has an indicator light, USB-C charging and two spare keycaps. BOOX lists dimensions of 43 × 37 × 25 mm (1.69 × 1.45 × 0.98 in) and an approximate weight of 29 g (1.02 oz). The store listed it at US$25.99 in 2026.

“PageTurner Ring” products
There is no single manufacturer or specification sheet behind that name. A PayLaterAlligator listing describes an unbranded ring with Bluetooth 5.0, a claimed range of up to 10 m, a 25 mAh ring battery, a 250 mAh charging case and USB-C charging. The same listing claims compatibility with Kindle, Kobo, iReader and BOOX.
An OnBuy listing for another unbranded device calls it “D07 Pro.” It lists a 10 m range, a 25 mAh battery, approximately 1.5 hours of charging, USB-C and two spare page-turner clips. These are listing-specific claims, not universal specifications for every ring sold as a page-turner.

Compatibility is the deciding issue
What BOOX officially guarantees
BOOX’s requirement is specific: the target BOOX reader must support Bluetooth and run firmware V4.2 or later. The statement names Note Air5 C and Palma 2 Pro and extends to other BOOX devices meeting those conditions. Before buying, check your reader’s model and firmware in its system settings, then install available updates. A device that lacks Bluetooth support or remains below the stated firmware version does not meet the published requirement.

This is a compatibility statement for BOOX hardware and firmware, not a promise that Tappy will issue page commands in every third-party reading application. Android applications can interpret remote buttons differently, and an app may not expose a next-page action to a generic Bluetooth input.
What the independent hands-on test found
TechRadar tested Tappy on a Nothing Phone (4a) Pro and reported that all three modes worked there. The same report says Tappy paired with a Kobo Libra Colour but failed to turn pages. Three Kindle devices did not detect Tappy as a Bluetooth device at all. The report also described Bluetooth 5.4, an approximately 10 m wireless range and regional prices of $25.99, €29.99 and AU$49.
Those results show why “it pairs” and “it turns pages” are different tests. The phone recognized the remote’s inputs, while the Kobo accepted a connection without responding to page commands, and the Kindle units did not discover it. This was one publication’s hands-on experience rather than a controlled laboratory comparison, so it should guide expectations rather than serve as a universal failure rate.
Why ring compatibility is harder to predict
A ring seller may list several e-reader brands together, but that does not establish that every model, firmware version or reading app supports the same buttons. Marketplace listings can also reuse photographs and descriptions for different hardware revisions. Treat the compatibility line as a claim about that particular listing. Look for a return policy and ask the seller which exact reader model was tested if the listing does not identify it.

Controls, ergonomics and everyday use
Tappy’s three operating modes
Tappy is organized around Reading, Browsing and Multimedia modes. In reading use, BOOX says it can flip pages and scroll. Browsing mode is intended for navigation away from a page, while Multimedia mode supports media controls; BOOX specifically mentions previous- and next-track commands for audiobooks or music. The two spare keycaps are useful if a cap is lost or you prefer the feel of the alternate pieces.
The 29 g body is a small thumb-click accessory rather than a ring worn continuously on a finger. That can be an advantage if you dislike wearing accessories or want to set the remote down between pages. It also means you must hold or position it somewhere within reach.
What a ring changes
A ring places its buttons on a finger, which can reduce the reach needed for one-handed or bedside reading. The cited listings pair the ring with a charging case, so the case can serve as storage and a way to recharge between sessions. The trade-off is that finger fit, button placement and comfort are model-specific. A ring that is too loose can move when you click; one that is too tight can become uncomfortable during a long session.
Some listings advertise camera shutters or media functions in addition to page turning. Consider those extras only after confirming which buttons generate page or scroll commands for your reader. A feature list copied from a phone accessory does not prove that an e-reader will use every function.

Which is better for reading in bed?
Choose Tappy when your reader is a supported BOOX model and you value a documented firmware requirement over a wearable design. Its official dimensions, USB-C charging and defined modes make it easier to identify the product and troubleshoot it. You can keep it beside a pillow or grip it with the same hand that holds the reader.
Choose a ring when finger-worn control is the priority and you are willing to verify a specific listing. The charging case and compact wearable form may suit a reader who wants the remote attached to the hand rather than resting nearby. Confirm that the ring’s buttons send the commands your reading app understands; a claimed 10 m range does not solve an unsupported page-command protocol.
For a non-BOOX reader, neither option should be purchased on brand names alone. Tappy’s Kobo and Kindle results demonstrate that a respected accessory can still fail outside its intended ecosystem, while a ring’s multi-brand claim may describe only a seller’s expectation.
How to check compatibility before buying
- Identify the exact reader. Write down the model name, operating system or firmware version and the reading app in which you want to turn pages. “Kindle,” “Kobo” or “BOOX” is not precise enough by itself.
- Check the manufacturer’s requirement. For Tappy, confirm Bluetooth support and firmware V4.2 or later on the BOOX device. For a ring, record the exact marketplace listing, model designation and stated supported devices.
- Separate pairing from page turning. A listing or review that says “Bluetooth pairing” has not necessarily demonstrated next-page and previous-page commands. Look for evidence involving the exact reader and app.
- Confirm the return route. Compatibility is affected by firmware and software updates. Buy from a seller whose return terms cover a remote that pairs but does not control pages.
- Test before removing packaging. Pair the remote, open the intended book, test forward and backward page commands, and try scrolling if that is part of your use case. Keep the packaging until both directions work reliably.
Troubleshooting when pages do not turn
The reader never sees the remote
- Charge the remote and switch it on; an indicator light or low battery can affect discovery.
- Make sure it is not already connected to another phone, tablet or reader nearby. Disconnect that device before scanning again.
- Restart Bluetooth on the reader and repeat pairing from the reader’s Bluetooth settings.
- For Tappy, confirm that the BOOX device supports Bluetooth and is on firmware V4.2 or later.
- If a Kindle or another reader still cannot detect Tappy, treat the TechRadar result as a warning that the platform may not expose a compatible Bluetooth profile.
The remote pairs but does nothing in the book
- Test the buttons in a simple screen such as a browser or system interface, where supported, to determine whether the reader receives any input.
- Switch to the reading app’s own page and scroll controls if available. Some apps respond to volume or arrow keys; others ignore them.
- Try both forward and backward buttons and verify that you are not in a mode intended for browsing or multimedia rather than reading.
- Unpair and re-pair after changing modes. A successful connection does not prove that the current mode maps to page commands.
Range or comfort is the problem
Keep the reader and remote within the listing’s claimed range, but remember that the 10 m figures are maximum claims from marketplace listings or a hands-on report, not a guaranteed distance through walls or bedding. If clicks are missed at close range, solve pairing and mode issues first rather than assuming distance is the cause. For a ring, adjust the fit or use a different finger; for Tappy, reposition the remote so the buttons can be reached without changing your grip.

Price, availability and value
The BOOX Official Store listed Tappy at US$25.99 in 2026. TechRadar reported regional prices of $25.99, €29.99 and AU$49 in its June 12, 2026 article. Marketplace ring prices and stock vary by seller, and the cited listings do not establish a stable category price.
Value depends more on avoiding an incompatible purchase than on the lowest sticker price. Tappy’s published BOOX requirement reduces uncertainty for a supported BOOX reader. A ring can offer a more convenient form factor, but its variable specifications make the seller’s return policy and exact model part of the cost calculation. Do not treat a charging case or a larger battery number as evidence of longer real-world runtime unless the seller provides test conditions.
Decision guide
| Your situation | More defensible choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You use a BOOX device that supports Bluetooth and runs firmware V4.2 or later | BOOX Tappy | It is the only option here with a manufacturer-published device and firmware requirement |
| You want a remote worn on a finger | A specific ring listing, after verification | The ring form is the main advantage, but compatibility and controls vary by model |
| You use Kindle or Kobo | Neither without a return option and exact-model confirmation | Tappy paired unsuccessfully or failed page turning in the cited hands-on tests, and ring claims are seller-dependent |
| You want audiobook or music controls on a supported BOOX setup | BOOX Tappy | BOOX explicitly describes previous- and next-track functions in Multimedia mode |
| You are comparing only battery-capacity numbers | Do not decide from capacity alone | Ring capacities are listing claims, while Tappy’s cited listing does not publish a capacity figure |
Bottom-line recommendation
For a compatible BOOX reader, buy Tappy if predictable product identity and official firmware guidance matter more than a wearable ring. Its US$25.99 official listing, defined 43 × 37 × 25 mm body, approximately 29 g weight, USB-C charging and three modes give you concrete points to verify.
Buy a PageTurner Ring only as a model-specific experiment: confirm the exact listing, button behavior, target reader and return terms. The ring’s finger-worn design and charging case may be more comfortable for some one-handed readers, but “PageTurner Ring” alone does not identify a standardized accessory. No published controlled head-to-head test establishes a universal winner.
