If BOOX Tappy pairs but does not advance pages, the Bluetooth link is only one part of the chain. First verify that your BOOX reader is a supported Bluetooth model running firmware V4.2 or later. Then remove and recreate the pairing, and configure the reading app to respond to the button events Tappy sends. BOOX says its page-turn buttons simulate Android volume buttons, so an app must support volume-key page turning or provide a setting to enable it. A successful connection does not guarantee page turning in every app.
What Tappy is actually sending
Tappy is a small Bluetooth page-turn accessory measuring 43 × 37 × 25 mm and weighing approximately 29 g, according to BOOX’s official product information. Its buttons do not create a universal page-turn command that every Android reading app must understand. BOOX documents that built-in page-turn buttons and magnetic-case buttons simulate Android volume buttons. Tappy relies on the same type of event path: the reader receives a button event, and the active reading app decides whether that event changes the page, changes volume, or does nothing.

This explains the most confusing symptom: Tappy appears connected, but pressing a button changes the device volume or has no visible effect. Bluetooth pairing can be working normally while the app rejects, remaps, or ignores the event. Troubleshooting therefore has three boundaries: reader firmware and hardware support, Bluetooth pairing, and application behavior.
Check compatibility before changing settings
Firmware and model requirement
BOOX’s official Tappy listing says the accessory works with the Note Air5 C, Palma 2 Pro, and other BOOX devices that both support Bluetooth and run firmware V4.2 or later. The requirement is a boundary, not a performance guarantee: a device below V4.2, an unlisted model, or a model without the required Bluetooth support may pair incompletely or fail to deliver usable page-turn behavior.

On the BOOX reader, open Settings > About (or the equivalent device-information page) and record the model and firmware/build number. Compare that information with the current Tappy compatibility information for your model. If the reader is below V4.2, install the official update available for that device before diagnosing an app. Do not assume that a newer Android version alone satisfies the BOOX requirement; the relevant condition is BOOX firmware V4.2 or later on a Bluetooth-capable model.
What compatibility does—and does not—tell you
Compatibility confirms that the reader can communicate with Tappy. It does not certify page turning in Kindle, Kobo, Libby, a browser, or every other third-party reader. Each app controls its own handling of volume and key events, and app updates can change those controls. Treat the official model-and-firmware requirement as the first checkpoint, not as a promise of universal app support.
Pair Tappy correctly from the BOOX Bluetooth menu
Use the BOOX system Bluetooth flow rather than relying on an old saved connection. A clean pairing removes stale profiles and confirms that Tappy is discoverable.
- Enable Bluetooth on the reader. From the Home screen, open Settings > Bluetooth. You can also open Control Center and long-press the Bluetooth control to reach the device-selection screen.
- Power on Tappy. Keep it close to the BOOX reader during setup. If it was connected to another phone, tablet, or reader, disable Bluetooth on that other device temporarily so it cannot capture the accessory.
- Enter pairing mode. With Tappy on, press both buttons together to place it in pairing mode. The independent hands-on documentation for Tappy describes this two-button action as the discoverability step.
- Select Tappy in the BOOX list. Wait for the accessory to appear under available Bluetooth devices, then tap its name. Accept any pairing confirmation shown by the reader.
- Test both buttons in a reader. Begin with a BOOX-supported reading app or another app in which volume-key page turning is known to be enabled. Testing immediately in a compatible environment separates pairing faults from app limitations.
If Tappy never appears, repeat the two-button pairing action with Bluetooth already open on the BOOX screen. Move the accessory within arm’s reach, turn it off and on, and remove any old Tappy entry before trying again. If it appears but refuses to connect, forget the saved device, restart Bluetooth, and perform the complete sequence again.

Configure the reading app to turn pages
Enable volume-button page turning
BOOX’s documented behavior is that page-turn buttons simulate Android volume buttons. In a reading app that offers the feature, open the app’s reading settings and enable the option labeled Turn Pages with Volume Controls (wording can vary by app version). Then return to a book, press Tappy’s forward and back buttons, and verify that the page changes rather than the system volume.
Some apps place this control in a reading toolbar, a three-dot menu, or a dedicated hardware-key section instead of the main settings screen. Search the app’s settings for volume, hardware buttons, key controls, or page-turn keys. If no such option exists, the app may not expose volume-key page turning at all.
When the app changes volume instead
Volume movement proves that the reader is receiving button events; it does not indicate a Bluetooth failure. Return to the app’s reading settings and enable volume-controlled page turns. If the app has separate controls for volume-up and volume-down, assign the two events to next and previous page as appropriate. Disable any competing accessibility or remapping feature that intercepts those keys, then test again.
When nothing happens
If pressing either button produces no page movement and no volume change, check that the book is open and the app is in its reading view rather than a library, dialog, or text-entry screen. Confirm that Tappy is still shown as connected in Settings > Bluetooth. Test another known reader before changing system settings; this identifies whether the failure follows Tappy or stays with one app.

Use a known-good app to isolate the fault
Open a BOOX-supported reading app and test Tappy there after enabling volume-based page turns. If it works in that app, Bluetooth and the accessory are probably functioning, and the original app is the likely boundary. If it fails in every reader, return to firmware, pairing, and device support checks.
Kindle, Kobo, Libby, and other third-party apps should not be treated as a single compatibility category. Their support can differ by app version, device, and setting. The available hands-on reporting for the Palma 2 Pro observed firmware and app-support differences during testing, reinforcing that a successful Tappy pairing does not establish page turning in every application. For each target app, verify whether it accepts Android volume events or provides a page-turn setting; do not infer support from another app’s behavior.

Review BOOX app management and optimization
On the reader, open Apps > App Management and confirm that the reading app is installed, current, and allowed to run normally. Check the app’s BOOX optimization settings if page-turn controls stop responding after sleep, a display refresh change, or an app switch. Aggressive background restrictions can interfere with an app’s ongoing state, while auto-start permissions can increase power use and may slow the device.
Change one control at a time and retest. First confirm the app is current, then inspect optimization and auto-start behavior. Avoid granting broad background permissions as a universal fix: they can improve persistence for some workflows but consume more power and, according to BOOX, auto-start settings may slow the device. If the app only fails after sleep, note that timing separately when you report the problem.

Recovery sequence for a persistent failure
- Write down the BOOX model, firmware/build number, Tappy’s connection status, and the affected app and version.
- Close the reading app and turn Bluetooth off and back on from Settings > Bluetooth.
- Forget or remove the existing Tappy entry from the BOOX Bluetooth device list.
- Restart the BOOX reader. Power-cycle Tappy as well.
- Open Bluetooth settings, place Tappy in pairing mode by pressing both buttons, and pair it again.
- Open a known BOOX-supported reader and enable its volume-button page-turn option.
- Test forward and back buttons, then test the original app without changing several settings at once.
This sequence distinguishes a stale Bluetooth profile from an app that simply does not consume the event. It also creates a reproducible record for support instead of an unexplained report that “Tappy does nothing.”

For a software issue, use Settings > Feedback on the BOOX reader. Include:
- the exact BOOX model;
- firmware and build version;
- the Tappy connection state and whether the buttons change volume, do nothing, or work intermittently;
- the reading app name and version;
- whether volume-controlled page turning is enabled;
- whether Tappy works in a different BOOX-supported reader;
- what happens after the reader wakes from sleep; and
- the pairing and recovery steps you already completed.
BOOX also provides service-request routes based on the purchase channel. Use the route that matches where the accessory and reader were bought, especially if the issue remains across supported firmware and multiple apps.

What the symptoms mean
“It pairs but does nothing”
Verify firmware and model support, then forget and recreate the pairing. If Tappy works in a known BOOX reader, configure the affected app or treat it as an app-support limitation.
“It only changes volume”
The event is reaching Android. Enable the app’s volume-button page-turn setting; without that setting, volume behavior is expected.

That pattern points to different app handling, not necessarily a defective Tappy. Check each app’s current settings and version, and report unsupported hardware-key behavior to the app developer when no page-turn control is available.
“It stopped after an update”
Record the new BOOX firmware and app versions, retest pairing, and submit those details through Settings > Feedback. Version-specific behavior is important evidence for support.
