Boomer shooters are action-first first-person shooters built around speed, aggressive movement, punchy weapons, enemy pressure and secret hunting. Immersive sim shooters are simulation-first games in which interconnected spaces, reactive AI, physics, tools and stealth create several valid ways to solve a problem. They can overlap, but their design priorities differ: a boomer shooter asks how efficiently you can fight, while an immersive sim asks whether fighting is even your best option.
What is a boomer shooter?
“Boomer shooter” is a modern style label for retro-inspired first-person shooters. It refers to games that revive the feel associated with 1990s Doom and Quake while using newer design ideas, technology and quality-of-life features. It is not a strict technical genre boundary, and “boomer” describes the game’s retrospective aesthetic and design lineage rather than the age of its players.

The label grew out of the renewed interest in fast, combat-focused FPS design. A Game Informer feature published on October 13, 2023, describes the category as a mutation of “Doom-clone DNA” and identifies Dusk, Amid Evil, Ion Fury, Turbo Overkill and Prodeus as examples. Its memorable summary is “a devotional love of the shotgun,” “an unforgiving need for speed” and “an archaeologist’s fetish for secrets.” Those phrases describe a design attitude, not a checklist that every game must satisfy.

In a boomer shooter, most systems exist to make combat more intense, readable and replayable. Enemies pressure you from multiple directions, weapons have distinct rhythms, and movement is part of aiming and survival. Strafing, circle-strafing, dashing, rocket-jumping or other mobility techniques can be as important as choosing the right gun.

The shotgun is a recurring symbol because it rewards closing distance and committing to an attack. It is not a literal requirement. A particular game may center on a nailgun, magic staff, revolver, explosive launcher or a large arsenal, but the underlying expectation is similar: keep moving, learn enemy patterns and use weapons decisively.
Levels are built for flow and discovery
Levels commonly use authored combat arenas, locked doors, keys, switches, traversal challenges and optional secret areas. The route is usually designed so that encounters can be staged with clear pacing: a buildup, a fight, a breather and then a harder test. Secrets reward players who inspect walls, search side rooms, notice unusual architecture or master a movement trick.
Story can be minimal, delivered between missions or kept subordinate to momentum. That does not mean boomer shooters lack atmosphere or lore; it means narrative rarely interrupts the core loop of entering a space, reading threats, choosing weapons and surviving at speed.
Retro presentation with modern design
Many boomer shooters use deliberately low-resolution textures, chunky models, pixel effects or visual references to 1990s hardware. Others use contemporary graphics while preserving the same combat philosophy. In a 2024 Ars Technica interview, John Romero described the appeal as combining a “dated retro look” with “newer design sensibilities.” He explained that modern design knowledge can create “the surprise of some modern design but in a package that feels like it’s from 1995.”
What makes a game an immersive sim?
An immersive sim is defined less by its camera or weapon list than by its development philosophy. In a March 2, 2017 PlayStation.Blog developer article, Prey creative director Raphael Colantonio and lead designer Ricardo Bare called it a style at the intersection of FPS and RPG. They immediately qualified that description: “What makes the immersive sim more than just ‘FPS meets RPG’ is that the game development philosophy behind it relies a lot on simulation.”
The game presents a believable, interconnected playground populated by systems that respond to one another. The designer supplies rules, objects, characters and goals; the player combines them in ways that may not have been scripted as a single solution. Shooting can be one answer, but it is only one answer among stealth, hacking, dialogue, distraction, environmental manipulation and simply finding another route.

Interconnected spaces and alternate routes
Immersive-sim environments are commonly designed as networks rather than a sequence of sealed arenas. A locked room might be reached through a vent, an elevator, a maintenance corridor, a hacked terminal or a dangerous exterior path. Verticality matters because balconies, shafts, rooftops and crawlspaces expand the number of possible approaches.

Progression can still involve keys, codes and combat encounters, but the level usually supports several routes around an obstacle. Backtracking is meaningful because a newly acquired ability or piece of information can change how an earlier space works.
Simulation, AI and physical objects
Interactive objects are not merely decorative. Doors, computers, traps, movable containers, power systems and physics objects can affect navigation and combat. AI may react to noise, line of sight, alarms, distractions or changes in the environment. The exact depth varies by game, but the expectation is that the world follows understandable rules that the player can learn and exploit.
Colantonio and Bare cited Prey’s GLOO gun as an example. It can incapacitate enemies, create temporary platforms and open routes that designers did not explicitly lay out as a single intended path. That kind of tool is characteristic of immersive-sim thinking: one mechanic serves combat, traversal and problem solving at once.
Direct and indirect tools
Direct tools affect a target immediately: firearms, blades, grenades or a power that disables an enemy. Indirect tools change the situation: a hacking ability opens a door, a lure moves a guard, a power cuts off an alarm, or a physics object blocks a sensor. Players are rewarded for understanding relationships between systems rather than memorizing a prescribed sequence.
Story assembled through action
Immersive sims often distribute narrative through logs, environmental details, conversations, documents and the consequences of player choices. Nightdive’s Paul Neurath, discussing the lineage from Ultima Underworld to System Shock, described situations in which players could talk to or distract an obstacle, construct protection from inventory items or run past instead of taking one combat route. He also highlighted physics-driven emergent behavior and stories assembled through exploration and logs.

This approach gives the player responsibility for connecting information. Stephen Kick, Nightdive’s CEO and System Shock game director, summarized the attitude as: “System Shock doesn’t hold your hand and trusts the player with the information it presents.”
Boomer shooters and immersive sims compared
| Design axis | Boomer shooter | Immersive sim shooter |
|---|---|---|
| Primary promise | Fast, satisfying FPS combat and constant momentum | A responsive world that supports player-created solutions |
| Combat tempo | Usually high pressure; stopping can be dangerous | Variable; scouting, hacking or stealth may slow the pace before a fight |
| Movement | Continuous strafing, dodging and advanced movement are often central | Movement serves navigation, positioning and access to alternate routes |
| Weapon handling | Distinct weapon rhythms, fast swapping and ammunition decisions | Weapons are one tool set among powers, gadgets, hacking and environmental options |
| Level structure | Authored arenas, keys, combat routes and secret areas | Interconnected spaces with vents, vertical paths, locked areas and backtracking |
| Problem solving | How can you defeat this encounter efficiently? | Should you fight, sneak, hack, distract, exploit physics or find another route? |
| Stealth and noncombat | Usually limited or optional | Often a supported strategy with meaningful consequences |
| Systemic interaction | Focused on combat interactions and movement mastery | Objects, AI, powers and environments can interact in unexpected combinations |
| Narrative delivery | Often light, direct and momentum-friendly | Frequently spread across logs, conversations, environmental clues and player actions |
| Experimentation | Rewards experimenting with weapons, routes and movement techniques | Expects experimentation with rules, tools and the environment |
These are tendencies rather than admission rules. A game can break several of them and still fit one label better than the other.
The lineages behind the two labels
Doom, Quake and the boomer-shooter revival
Doom and Quake are the historical reference points for the modern boomer-shooter conversation. They established a vocabulary of fast movement, readable enemy silhouettes, powerful weapons, combat arenas, keys and secrets. Contemporary games reinterpret that vocabulary with new movement systems, progression structures, visual styles and accessibility options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDusk, Amid Evil, Ion Fury, Turbo Overkill and Prodeus demonstrate how broad the revival can be. One may emphasize occult horror, another fantasy weapons, another Build-engine-style exploration, another extreme mobility or another modern rendering over retro geometry. Their common center is the combat experience and the expectation that the player will engage threats directly and aggressively.
Ultima Underworld, System Shock and the immersive-sim tradition
The immersive-sim lineage is often traced through Ultima Underworld and System Shock. An Epic Games interview published on March 31, 2023, identifies the 1994 System Shock as an early example whose nonlinear design, weapons, hardware augmentations and player-driven story influenced Deus Ex, BioShock and Prey.
Those games differ in setting and emphasis, but they share an interest in giving the player a place governed by systems rather than a single cinematic route. A terminal can reveal information or change access. An augmentation can create a new approach. An environmental detail can become a clue. The player’s route through the story is shaped by choices made inside the space, not only by dialogue selections between set pieces.

Where the categories overlap
The labels are porous because both styles use first-person perspective, weapons, exploration and authored levels. A game may deliver boomer-shooter combat inside a world with immersive-sim systems, or it may be called an immersive sim even though shooting is only one part of a broader RPG, stealth or adventure structure.

Prey as a clear bridge
Prey is a particularly clear bridge between the conversations. Arkane presents it as an FPS/RPG whose identity comes from simulation: interconnected spaces, vertical routes, AI behaviors, physics objects, traps, computers and tools such as the GLOO gun. Its firefights can be tense and kinetic, yet the game repeatedly asks the player to investigate, improvise and use the environment instead of treating every obstacle as an arena duel.
A hybrid does not need to split its time evenly. It might have fast, lethal combat but allow hacking, stealth and environmental tricks before or during a fight. Conversely, a game with a few alternate routes is not automatically an immersive sim if its systems never meaningfully change how problems can be solved. The useful question is which priority governs the majority of play.

Choose a boomer shooter if you want fast FPS action
- You want to spend most of your time moving, aiming and firing rather than reading terminals or managing dialogue.
- You enjoy learning enemy patterns, weapon matchups and arena layouts.
- You prefer clear objectives and a strong forward rhythm over branching solutions.
- You like searching for secrets, collectibles and optional challenge rooms.
- You want a retro-inspired presentation or a modern game that preserves 1990s FPS momentum.
Expect demanding encounters, frequent movement and a combat loop that rewards decisiveness. Difficulty often comes from keeping control while several threats attack at once, not from finding the one correct interaction in a puzzle room.
Choose an immersive sim if you want multiple solutions
- You enjoy scouting a space before committing to a fight.
- You want stealth, hacking, dialogue, powers or environmental manipulation to be legitimate alternatives to shooting.
- You like discovering how AI, physics and objects interact.
- You are comfortable reading logs, examining surroundings and connecting clues without constant objective markers.
- You want your route and consequences to reflect experimentation rather than a fixed sequence.
Expect a slower opening in some areas, more inventory or ability decisions and occasional uncertainty about the intended path. That uncertainty is part of the design: the game is asking you to test the rules and accept the result.

How to identify a game from its actual play
Marketing labels are inconsistent, so use the first hour as a practical test. Ask the following questions while playing:
- What does the game reward most often? If rewards arrive mainly for clearing arenas quickly and finding weapon upgrades, the center is probably boomer-shooter combat. If rewards come from exploring side routes, solving access problems or combining tools, the center is closer to an immersive sim.
- Can you bypass a guarded obstacle? Try a vent, terminal, disguise, distraction, alternate key or environmental route. If the level supports several approaches that produce different risks and outcomes, simulation is doing substantial work.
- Do systems interact outside scripted moments? Test whether objects, hazards, AI and tools behave consistently when you use them in an unusual way. Repeatable rules matter more than the number of buttons on the interface.
- What happens when you refuse the obvious fight? If the game provides a meaningful stealth, hacking or traversal option, it is signaling immersive-sim priorities. If the level closes until every enemy is dead, it is prioritizing combat flow.
- How are secrets designed? Hidden rooms that reward observation and movement fit both styles. Secrets that reveal alternate quest solutions, information or systemic advantages point more strongly toward an immersive sim.
Common misconceptions
“Boomer shooter” does not mean an old game
The term usually describes a modern game inspired by older FPS design. A recently released title can be a boomer shooter even when it uses contemporary lighting, animation, accessibility options and level technology. The reference is to style and lineage, not release date.
An immersive sim is not simply an FPS with RPG statistics
Character levels, skill trees and inventory screens do not create an immersive sim by themselves. The defining feature is simulation: the world’s systems, spaces and characters support multiple approaches that the player can discover and combine. A linear shooter with damage numbers may be an RPG-inflected FPS without being an immersive sim.
Immersive sims are not necessarily nonviolent
Many immersive sims feature substantial gunplay and can be extremely lethal. The distinction is that combat is one supported strategy rather than the only meaningful strategy. A game can let you defeat an enemy with a weapon, avoid it, manipulate it or use the environment against it.
Secrets do not automatically make a shooter a boomer shooter
Secret areas appear in many FPS traditions. In a boomer shooter they usually reinforce exploration, mastery and replayable combat routes. In an immersive sim, hidden information or access can also change how a mission unfolds, which character you encounter or which systems become available.
A concise decision rule
Choose the boomer-shooter side when your ideal session is a chain of intense fights in which movement, weapon rhythm and level knowledge keep you alive. Choose the immersive-sim side when your ideal session is entering a complicated place, learning its rules and deciding whether to shoot, sneak, hack, distract, improvise or leave by another route. If both descriptions sound equally appealing, start with a hybrid such as Prey and judge whether you prefer its combat flow or its systemic freedom.
