If you want the bullied outsider, supernatural power and explosive revenge of Stephen King’s Carrie, begin with The Weight of Blood for the closest school-and-prom structure. Choose Firestarter for a hunted young psychic, Slewfoot for persecution and witchcraft, or The Change for adult women turning supernatural gifts toward vengeance. None reproduces every part of Carrie; each matches a different pressure point in the novel.
Why Carrie remains a distinctive model
Stephen King’s Carrie was published by Doubleday on April 5, 1974. It is available in hardcover, paperback, audio and Kindle editions, although the exact editions and availability vary by market and date.

The novel follows Carrie White, an isolated high-school girl whose telekinetic ability develops while she is trapped between two hostile worlds. At home, her domineering, ultra-religious mother treats ordinary adolescence as sin. At school, classmates torment her. A cruel prank at senior prom turns private humiliation into public catastrophe when Carrie uses her ability to retaliate.

The setup matters because the supernatural power is not an isolated gimmick. Carrie’s gift grows inside a system of sexual shame, religious fanaticism and peer cruelty. King has said that the character was “a composite of two girls Stephen knew during high school” and that the story concerns “how women find their own channels of power, and what men fear about women and women’s sexuality.” That combination—outsiderhood, bodily or psychic change, social punishment and rage—is what readers usually mean when they ask for “books like Carrie.”

At-a-glance: which book matches the part of Carrie you want?
| Book | Closest match | Main source of danger | Supernatural element | How revenge works | Distance from Carrie |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Weight of Blood — Tiffany D. Jackson | Bullying, school politics, prom and a modern retelling | Racism, exposure and institutional image-management | Not presented as a telekinesis match | Retaliation shaped by identity and public violence | Closest setting and structure; different social history |
| Firestarter — Stephen King | A young person whose powers become dangerous | A government special-force team pursuing a family | Psychic ability | Resistance and survival against pursuers | Strong power-and-pursuit match; not a school story |
| Slewfoot — Brom | An ostracized girl, persecution and revenge | Community suspicion and religious persecution | Witchcraft and a supernatural/demonic presence | Personal vengeance against persecutors | Thematic match rather than prom or telekinesis |
| The Change — Kirsten Miller | Women discovering power and seeking justice | Wider crimes surrounding a young girl’s death | A broad supernatural blend | Collective vengeance and investigation | Loosest match: adult protagonists and a crime plot |
The Weight of Blood: the closest school-and-prom parallel
Why it fits
Chicago Public Library’s March 29, 2024 recommendation describes Tiffany D. Jackson’s novel as a modern-day retelling of Carrie. Maddy is a biracial, white-passing student whose bullying intensifies when her identity is revealed. Her school stages its first integrated prom while trying to control the resulting publicity. That makes this the clearest choice if what you remember most is the high-school ecosystem: classmates policing one another, adults managing appearances and a dance that becomes the focus of collective fear.
What it changes
The novel’s central conflict is rooted in race, passing and institutional racism rather than Carrie’s telekinesis and religiously abusive home. The school’s public-relations motive is part of the pressure: inclusion is treated as an event to manage, not simply a moral commitment. The result is a different examination of how a community turns a young woman’s identity into a threat.

Firestarter: a powered child on the run
Why it fits
Chicago Public Library recommends Stephen King’s Firestarter to Carrie readers because it centers a young girl with psychic-like abilities that become difficult to control. A government special-force team pursues her family, turning her power into both a target and a weapon. The emotional engine is still a young person whose unusual capacity makes ordinary safety impossible.
Where the pressure moves
In Carrie, the immediate threat is a hostile school and home. In Firestarter, the threat is organized state pursuit. That changes the shape of the horror: there is less emphasis on a single humiliating social ritual and more on surveillance, capture and the danger of powerful institutions deciding that a child can be used.
A horror-literature commenter also suggested Firestarter for its similar atmosphere while noting that it is slower. Treat that as an individual reader’s impression, not a general measure of pace. The book is the right next step if you want King’s interest in gifted young protagonists under extreme pressure, even when the setting leaves school behind.

Slewfoot: persecution, witchcraft and retaliation
Why it fits
Brom’s Slewfoot connects to Carrie through an outsider whose community treats her as suspect and whose relationship to supernatural power becomes entangled with revenge. Chicago Public Library pairs it with readers interested in Abitha’s social persecution and accusations of witchcraft. A horror-literature commenter independently named it in response to a request for Carrie-like books.

What makes it different
This is not a school novel, and its supernatural framework is witchcraft and a demonic or otherworldly presence rather than telekinesis. The persecuting force is communal and religious: suspicion spreads through a society that already has rules for what an acceptable woman should be. That makes the book useful for readers drawn to the way Carrie links female power with fear of female sexuality, but it places the conflict in a historical community rather than a modern American high school.
Choose it when
- You want the outsider’s persecution to come from neighbors, religious authority and accusations of witchcraft.
- You prefer a darker folkloric atmosphere to a contemporary school setting.
- You want revenge to emerge from sustained communal pressure rather than one isolated prank.
The Change: female power aimed at wider injustice
Why it fits
Kirsten Miller’s The Change is the broadest thematic extension in this group. Three women discover gifts after life-changing events and use them while investigating the death of a young girl. Their pursuit expands into a wider set of crimes, so the supernatural becomes a means of uncovering wrongdoing and delivering justice.

Why it is a looser substitute
The protagonists are adult women, not an isolated teenager, and the plot is a crime investigation rather than a school tragedy. The book therefore shifts the question from “What happens when a bullied girl finally strikes back?” to “What can women do when they recognize power and direct it collectively against systems that protect abuse?” That makes it valuable for readers who respond to King’s theme of women finding their own channels of power but do not need the coming-of-age setting.
Choose it when
- You want several female protagonists rather than one ostracized student.
- You prefer vengeance connected to a larger investigation and social crimes.
- You want supernatural elements without traditional psychological-horror confinement.

The outsider
For a bullied schoolgirl, choose The Weight of Blood. For a child made dangerous by pursuit, choose Firestarter. For a woman marked as deviant by a religious community, choose Slewfoot. For adult women who become outsiders to the systems they challenge, choose The Change.

Slewfoot makes community suspicion and religious persecution central. The Change broadens harm into crimes that require investigation.

The supernatural question
If you want a psychic ability, Firestarter is the most direct alternative in this set. If you want witchcraft or a demonic presence, pick Slewfoot. If you want a broader supernatural-crime blend, pick The Change. The Weight of Blood is the choice when the retelling’s social and structural parallels matter more than reproducing Carrie’s exact power.
The shape of revenge
Carrie’s retaliation is intensely personal and tied to a single public humiliation. Firestarter treats resistance as survival against pursuers. Slewfoot turns long-term persecution into personal vengeance. The Weight of Blood examines retaliation through racial violence and public spectacle. The Change makes vengeance collective and investigative.
More King and Gothic-horror paths
Penguin Random House’s reader guide places Carrie under Gothic & Horror and Suspense & Thriller and lists Night Shift, The Shining and American Psycho among related works. The guide does not explain a specific thematic match for each title, so use this as a catalog path rather than a promise that they reproduce Carrie’s outsider-and-revenge structure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNight Shift is the most practical route if you want to sample King’s shorter forms and different kinds of horror. The Shining keeps the psychological pressure and family danger but changes the young outsider, school and revenge framework. American Psycho belongs to the guide’s broader suspense-and-horror neighborhood, yet its perspective and subject are substantially different from Carrie’s adolescent female rage. These are adjacent reading choices, not closer substitutes than the four books above.
A simple order for your next read
- Start with The Weight of Blood if the prom, school cruelty and retelling angle are non-negotiable.
- Move to Firestarter if the supernatural ability and danger of being pursued matter more than the setting.
- Choose Slewfoot if you want persecution shaped by religion, community suspicion and witchcraft.
- Finish with The Change if you want the theme of women claiming power expanded into an adult, ensemble crime story.
Before buying, check the current edition, format and regional availability. The publication formats listed for Carrie and the retailer listings for other novels can change over time; a library catalog or bookseller will show which editions are currently offered in your country.
What these books have in common—and what they do not
- All four connect an outsider’s social position to a threat that is larger than ordinary embarrassment.
- All treat power as consequential: psychic ability, witchcraft, supernatural gifts or the power to expose wrongdoing changes the protagonist’s choices.
- They do not share one setting, one age group or one type of monster.
- Only The Weight of Blood is explicitly presented as a modern-day retelling with a school and prom structure.
- Only Firestarter offers the closest direct parallel to a young protagonist whose psychic ability draws pursuit.
- Slewfoot and The Change are best read as thematic companions focused on persecution, female power and revenge rather than as plot replicas.
Bottom line for choosing a “Carrie” follow-up
Pick The Weight of Blood for the nearest structural echo, Firestarter for psychic power and pursuit, Slewfoot for religious persecution and witchcraft, and The Change for adult female solidarity directed at wider injustice. Reading them as different answers to the same set of questions—who is cast out, who controls the narrative, what power becomes available and what revenge costs—will give you a more useful match than searching for telekinesis alone.
