The filename is not identified in the Microsoft documentation reviewed for Windows system files, so the message should be treated as application-specific until you identify which program requested it.
Use Microsoft’s supported repair order first: install pending Windows updates, run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth from an elevated Command Prompt, then run sfc /scannow. If only one program fails, repair or reinstall that program from its publisher or official store. If those steps do not work, use the logs and escalation checks below rather than copying an unverified DLL into a system folder.

What the bonesframework.dll error means
A DLL is a library that an application loads for code or other functions. The error means that the requesting program could not load a file with the name bonesframework.dll at startup or when a particular feature was opened. The message alone does not establish that Windows itself owns the file, that the file was ever part of Windows, or that the computer is infected.
The parent application is not identified
Authoritative Microsoft material does not identify bonesframework.dll or an owning application. That matters because a DLL used by one application may be included in that application’s installation rather than in Windows. The correct repair therefore depends on whether one program fails or many programs fail.

What the wording can look like
- “The code execution cannot proceed because bonesframework.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because bonesframework.dll is missing from your computer.”
- A launcher or shortcut that closes immediately after the message appears.
Record the exact wording, the application name shown in the title bar, its version, its installation folder, and whether the problem began after a program update, Windows update, uninstall, or security-software action. Those details identify the responsible product more reliably than the DLL filename alone.
Do these checks before changing files
- Close the affected application and save work in other programs.
- Note whether the error affects one application or several unrelated applications.
- Keep the application’s installation media, account details, license or activation information, and any custom settings available before uninstalling it.
- Do not rename another DLL to
bonesframework.dll, and do not copy a file from another PC intoSystem32orSysWOW64without confirming its publisher, version, architecture, and intended installation path.
Step 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Pending updates can replace damaged Windows components and may be required by a repaired application. On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart even if Windows does not immediately demand a restart.
After Windows starts again, open the same application. If it still reports the missing DLL, continue with the component and system-file checks. An update alone cannot supply a publisher’s private application file, so a one-program failure may still require application repair or reinstallation.

Step 2: Repair the Windows component store with DISM
Microsoft documents DISM before SFC for Windows 10 and Windows 11. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected files.

- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. - Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because the percentage may pause for a while.
Normally, DISM obtains replacement components through Windows Update, so the computer should be connected to the internet. If DISM says that source files cannot be found, use a matching Windows installation source instead of a downloaded DLL. Microsoft documents a matching Windows installation, network share, or USB/DVD source for this situation; the source must match the installed Windows edition and version closely enough for the repair.
If you use an alternate source, follow the syntax and source instructions for that exact installation media. Do not guess a source path or mix files from a different Windows release. A mismatched source can leave the component store unrepaired.
Step 3: Scan protected files with SFC
After DISM completes, keep the elevated Command Prompt open and run:

Interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no corruption in the protected files it checked. If one application still fails, focus on that application’s installation.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart Windows and test the program again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the details in
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log, restart, and continue with the failure steps below. - Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: restart and run the scan again from an elevated prompt; if it still fails, use the log and disk-check steps rather than replacing files manually.
Step 4: Restart and test the affected program
Restart after DISM and SFC have finished, then launch the program from its normal shortcut or official launcher. Test the exact action that produced the message. If the error disappears, no DLL download is needed. If it returns, note whether the same program is still the only failure and whether the wording has changed.
If only one application fails
A single-program failure is the strongest indication that the missing library is part of that application’s installation, an add-on, or a file removed during an update or security-software action. Repair the program before making broader Windows changes.
Use the program’s built-in repair option
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find the affected application, open its menu, and choose Advanced options if that option is available.
- Select Repair and let Windows complete the process. A repair normally attempts to restore program files without removing personal settings, but the available options vary by application.
- If the application has its own launcher, open that launcher and look for Repair, Verify, or Modify.
Traditional desktop programs may instead expose a Repair or Modify button in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Use the option supplied by the publisher; do not select an unrelated program with a similar name.
Reinstall from an official source
- Close the program and back up any profiles, saves, templates, or exported settings that the publisher says should be preserved.
- Confirm that you have the activation information or account access needed after installation.
- Uninstall the affected program from Windows Settings or Control Panel.
- Restart if the uninstaller requests it.
- Download the current installer only from the software publisher’s official website or the official store where you obtained the application.
- Install the version appropriate for your Windows edition and CPU architecture, then apply the publisher’s updates.
If the error began immediately after an application update, check the publisher’s support notes for a corrected release or rollback procedure. Do not substitute a DLL from another application or from a third-party archive.

If several applications fail
When unrelated programs begin reporting missing or damaged libraries, complete the Windows update, DISM, and SFC sequence carefully. Check whether the failures began after a disk problem, interrupted update, system cleanup, or security-software action. If SFC reports repairs, restart before testing again so that pending replacements can be committed.
Windows may still operate while the component store or system drive has problems. A broad pattern of failures warrants checking the drive and starting Windows with nonessential services disabled, as described below. Keep the exact error text for each program; different filenames can point to different causes.

Review the CBS log
Open File Explorer and enter %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log in the address bar, or browse to the Windows folder, then LogsCBS. The file can be large. Search for entries around the time of the scan and record the names of files that could not be repaired. This evidence helps Microsoft or the application’s publisher distinguish Windows corruption from an application package problem.

In an elevated Command Prompt, run:
chkdsk /f C:Windows may say that the volume is in use and ask whether to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y only if you are ready to restart, then allow the check to finish. A disk check can take time, especially on a large or unhealthy drive. Do not interrupt it without a clear reason.
Try a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with non-Microsoft services and startup items disabled so that an incompatible background program can be isolated. Use Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure for your Windows version, disable non-Microsoft services and startup items as instructed, restart, and test the affected application. If the error disappears, re-enable items in groups and test after each change until the conflicting software is identified. Restore normal startup settings after testing.
Investigate security software only when timing implicates it
If the DLL vanished immediately after a security product quarantined or blocked a file, review that product’s quarantine and event history and follow its publisher’s recovery process. Do not broadly disable protection or add an unknown DLL to an allow list. If the security software is implicated, contact its publisher and the application’s publisher with the file name, path, timestamp, and detection details.
Consider device-related dependencies
If the failing application controls a printer, graphics adapter, audio device, Bluetooth device, Wi-Fi adapter, or USB hardware, check Device Manager for a device error and obtain the driver from the hardware maker or PC maker. A device driver problem is separate from proving that bonesframework.dll is a Windows file; do not use a driver package or DLL from an unrelated download site.
Why downloading bonesframework.dll is unsafe
No verified Microsoft source for this filename is established here. A DLL archive may provide the wrong build, an altered file, the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, or a file intended for a different application. Even a file with the same name can have a different version and exported functions, causing a new crash or a security problem.
Copying an unverified file into System32 or SysWOW64 can affect programs beyond the one showing the message and makes later troubleshooting harder. Renaming another library is not a repair. The supportable sources are a Windows repair source for Windows components and the application’s official installer or repair package for application files.
Choose the repair route by scope

What to send to support
When Windows repair and an official application reinstall do not resolve the error, contact the publisher of the program that displays it. Include the exact error text, application name and version, Windows edition and version, installation path, CPU architecture, the time the problem started, recent updates or security actions, DISM and SFC result messages, and relevant lines from %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Mention whether the failure occurs for every Windows account or only one, and whether a clean boot changes the result.
If no application name appears, identify the process or shortcut that launches the dialog and inspect recently installed programs. Do not send or upload personal files or license keys unless the publisher specifically requests them through its official support channel.
