Bonds can provide diversification and may gain when investors seek safety, while defensive stocks generally fall less than the broad market but remain equities whose prices, earnings and dividends can decline. That advantage can reverse when inflation and interest rates rise sharply, as both stocks and bonds can lose value.
The practical answer is not to switch blindly from stocks to “bonds.” First identify the shock, then specify the bond type, maturity, credit quality and inflation exposure you would own. A diversified allocation and scheduled rebalancing are generally more reliable than an all-or-nothing move after prices have already fallen.

What “safer” means in this comparison
Safety is not one measurement. A Treasury bill may have very low default risk but still lose purchasing power to inflation. A long-term bond fund can be creditworthy yet fall substantially when yields rise. A defensive stock may have a stable business but still lose 20% or more in an equity selloff. Decide which risk you are trying to reduce before choosing an asset.

In this article, “high-quality bonds” primarily means government debt or investment-grade securities. High-yield bonds are a separate category: their credit spreads often widen alongside stock-market risk, so they may behave more like equities than like a portfolio ballast.

How high-quality bonds behave in a falling market
Growth recession or flight to quality
When investors expect weaker growth and lower inflation, they often seek government debt. Falling expected policy rates can push bond yields down and prices up, offsetting part of a stock decline. This is the setting in which high-quality, intermediate-duration government bonds have historically offered their strongest diversification benefit.
Rising-rate selloff
Bond prices move inversely to yields. If yields rise because markets expect tighter monetary policy or stronger inflation, existing bonds with lower coupons become less valuable. Longer-duration holdings experience the largest price change for a given move in yields. A bond can remain fully creditworthy while its fund’s share price falls.
Credit stress
Government bonds with strong repayment capacity are different from corporate debt. Investment-grade corporate bonds add spread risk, and high-yield debt can decline when investors fear defaults or recession. Check a fund’s credit breakdown rather than relying on the word “bond” in its name.
Bond funds versus individual bonds
An individual bond held to maturity has a stated redemption amount, assuming the issuer pays. A bond fund has no fixed maturity for the portfolio as a whole; its net asset value changes every day as yields and credit spreads move. Both can be useful, but they solve different cash-flow and volatility problems.

How defensive stocks behave in a falling market
Defensive equities typically include companies whose demand is less sensitive to the business cycle, or portfolios designed for lower volatility. Their steadier revenue and balance sheets can reduce losses relative to the broad equity market, but they do not protect principal. A broad selloff can pull down nearly every share price, and a defensive company can suffer from regulation, competition, input-cost inflation, debt or an overvalued starting price.
Dividends are another source of confusion. A long record of payments is not a contractual promise. Management can cut a dividend when cash flow weakens, and a high yield may reflect a falling share price rather than improving income. Defensive stocks also retain equity valuation risk: investors may pay a premium for perceived stability and then reverse that premium when rates rise.
Relative performance is cyclical. Vanguard’s 2025 defensive-equity analysis found that the S&P Low Volatility Index gained 9.2% versus 14.6% for the broad S&P 500 over its cited comparison period. The lower-volatility index lagged in that rising market; lower volatility reduced, rather than eliminated, equity risk.

- The S&P 500 has averaged roughly 10% a year since its 1957 launch, according to Fidelity’s 2026 stock-and-bond discussion. That is a long-run average, not a forecast or a result investors receive every year.
- The Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index averaged about 6.6% a year from 1977 through 2025, according to Fidelity’s 2026 figures. The index includes a broad mix of U.S. investment-grade bonds; it is not the same as cash or a short-term Treasury holding.
- Fidelity Wealth Management calculated that missing the five best market days from January 1, 1988, through December 31, 2024, would have reduced a hypothetical portfolio’s ending value by 37%. The result illustrates the cost of mistiming a move out of risk assets; it does not prove that staying fully invested is appropriate for every goal.
- Vanguard reported in 2023 that investors who moved a balanced 60% stock/40% bond portfolio entirely to cash for three months after a severe market event had a 74% probability of underperforming, with average underperformance of 4.1%. This is a historical observation, not a guarantee about a future episode.
- Vanguard also reported no three- or five-year period since 1976 in which both stocks and bonds produced losses. That record does not eliminate the possibility of simultaneous losses; 2022 demonstrated that inflation and rising rates can damage both markets at once.
The shock determines which asset is safer
| Market shock | Likely relative advantage | Important exception |
|---|---|---|
| Falling growth and inflation expectations | High-quality government bonds often provide better diversification. | Very long duration can still be volatile, and starting yields matter. |
| Rapidly rising inflation and interest rates | Neither asset is reliably safe; short-duration or inflation-linked bonds may hold up better than long nominal bonds. | Defensive companies with pricing power can help, but their valuations and margins remain exposed. |
| Corporate-credit recession | Government bonds generally have the stronger defensive case. | Investment-grade and high-yield corporate bonds can fall as spreads widen. |
| Equity valuation correction with stable rates | High-quality bonds may diversify; defensive stocks may lose less than the market. | Expensive defensive shares can fall when their valuation premium contracts. |
| Liquidity panic | Cash and very short-term government instruments may be most stable in nominal terms. | Longer bonds and stocks can both be sold to raise cash, locking in losses. |
The table describes tendencies, not rules. The same asset can be defensive in one shock and vulnerable in another.

Choose the bond exposure, not just the label
Short-term government securities
Short maturities have relatively low duration, so their prices usually fluctuate less when yields change. They are suited to money needed soon, but reinvestment risk is higher: as securities mature, future yields may be lower.
Intermediate government bonds
Intermediate maturities offer more interest-rate sensitivity and usually more income potential than short maturities. They are the conventional “ballast” choice when a slowdown is expected to bring lower yields, but they can decline in a rate shock.
Long-term government bonds
Long duration can deliver substantial gains when yields fall and substantial losses when yields rise. Use them only when the larger price swings fit your time horizon and rebalancing plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInvestment-grade corporate bonds
These add company credit risk to interest-rate risk. They may provide more yield than government debt, but their diversification can weaken during a recession because spreads widen as investors demand compensation for default risk.

High-yield bonds
High-yield securities are not a substitute for a defensive government-bond allocation. Their income is higher because default and spread risks are higher, and their returns can correlate with stocks during stress.
Inflation-linked bonds
Inflation-linked securities are designed to adjust principal or interest with an inflation measure. They address purchasing-power risk differently from nominal bonds, but their market prices still move with real yields and can be volatile.
Evaluate defensive stocks on their remaining risks
- Business sensitivity: Examine how revenue and margins behaved in previous slowdowns, not just the sector label.
- Balance sheet: High debt can turn a supposedly stable company into a rate-sensitive investment.
- Valuation: A premium price for safety creates room for disappointment if earnings merely meet expectations.
- Concentration: A narrow defensive sector can introduce single-industry, regulatory or commodity risk.
- Dividend quality: Review free cash flow, payout ratios and debt maturities; yield alone is not a safety measure.
- Portfolio beta: A collection of “defensive” shares still has equity-market exposure and can fall together in a broad panic.
Should you move from stocks into bonds during a downturn?
Usually, do not make an all-or-nothing switch solely because prices have fallen. A downturn changes expected returns and risk, but it does not reveal the future path of rates or earnings. The better question is whether your target allocation still matches your time horizon, cash needs and ability to tolerate loss.
- Separate near-term cash from long-term capital. Keep emergency reserves and money needed in the next few years in appropriate cash or short-term instruments before adjusting a retirement or investment portfolio.
- Define the risk you are reducing. If the concern is an equity recession, high-quality government bonds may help. If the concern is inflation, consider duration and inflation exposure rather than buying any bond fund indiscriminately.
- Set a strategic allocation. Write down the intended stock, bond and cash weights before markets become stressful. Include limits for duration, credit quality and concentration.
- Rebalance by rule. Direct new contributions or a portion of sales toward assets below target, or use calendar or threshold-based rebalancing. This sells relatively high and buys relatively low without requiring a market forecast.
- Use a measured change if your circumstances changed. A shorter horizon, job loss or lower loss tolerance can justify a gradual reduction in equity risk. Make the change because the plan changed, not because a headline predicted the next market move.
- Check taxes and account rules. Selling in a taxable account can realize gains or losses; retirement accounts have different trading and withdrawal consequences. Consider fees, bid-ask spreads and fund turnover.
- Document the exception. If you depart from the target allocation, record the condition that will bring you back. Without an exit rule, a temporary defensive move can become an unplanned permanent market-timing decision.
Why cash is different from bonds
The SEC’s investor-education framework identifies cash and cash equivalents as the safest of the three major asset categories in nominal terms, while also describing them as the lowest-return category. Cash avoids the duration price movement of longer bonds, but inflation can steadily reduce what it buys. It is appropriate for liquidity needs, not automatically for long-term wealth preservation.
Best Value
Moving a balanced portfolio entirely to cash after a crash also creates reinvestment risk. The strongest recovery days often occur near the weakest days, which is why the historical “missing the five best days” result matters. If cash is used temporarily, a written schedule for redeployment is more disciplined than waiting for certainty that markets have bottomed.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“All bonds rise when stocks fall.”
Correction: specify government versus corporate credit, maturity and the inflation regime. In 2022, rising inflation and rates pushed stocks and bonds down together.
“Defensive means no loss.”
Correction: defensive stocks can reduce beta, not eliminate equity risk. Review the actual drawdown history and concentration of the holding.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“A higher bond yield is a free safety upgrade.”
Correction: higher yield usually compensates for duration, credit, liquidity or inflation risk. Identify which risk is being paid.
“The safest move is to wait in cash until the news improves.”
Correction: cash protects nominal liquidity but can miss the rebound and lose purchasing power. Use it for known spending needs and as part of a deliberate allocation.
“One allocation fits every investor.”
Correction: a household with a three-year spending need, a stable pension and a long retirement horizon faces different risks. Asset safety must be judged against the date and currency of the liability.
A practical decision checklist
- What exact bond exposure is under consideration: Treasury, investment-grade corporate, high-yield, inflation-linked, individual bond or fund?
- What is the duration, maturity schedule and credit-quality mix?
- Could the money be needed before the bonds mature?
- Is the objective principal stability, income, inflation protection, liquidity or long-term growth?
- How much equity exposure remains after buying defensive stocks?
- Would a rate rise, inflation surprise or credit event undermine the proposed hedge?
- What allocation will be restored, and when will rebalancing occur?
- What taxes, fees and trading spreads apply in the account and country where you invest?
Bottom line for a falling market
For a typical recessionary equity decline, high-quality government bonds are generally the safer diversifier than defensive stocks. Defensive stocks can be useful when you want to remain invested in equities with somewhat lower volatility, but they do not provide principal protection. Neither choice is universally safe: duration, inflation, credit quality, valuation and liquidity determine the outcome. Keep cash for near-term obligations, build a diversified target allocation, and rebalance rather than making a total switch in response to a single market drop.
