Bond Volatility Is Rising While Bitcoin and Stocks Stay Calm: What MOVE Signals

As of CoinDesk’s October 6, 2026 report, the MOVE index was around 116 while measures of expected volatility for bitcoin and the S&P 500 were near year-to-date lows. That gap may be worth watching, but it does not show that a bitcoin or stock-market volatility spike is inevitable—or tell investors which way prices will move.

What the MOVE index measures

MOVE is a measure of expected volatility in the U.S. bond market. “VIX of bonds” is a useful shorthand, but not the index’s formal name. ICE calls it the ICE BofA U.S. Bond Market Option Volatility Estimate Index and says it measures U.S. bond-market yield volatility by tracking a basket of over-the-counter options on U.S. interest-rate swaps. ICE’s index page lists North American coverage, history since 1996, intraday and daily frequencies, and real-time, delayed, end-of-day and historical data. It does not establish retail access or pricing.

CoinDesk’s October 6 explanation describes MOVE as measuring expected movement in Treasury yields across 2-, 5-, 10- and 30-year maturities, with the greatest weight on the 10-year. That is CoinDesk’s characterization; it is distinct from ICE’s current product description of the underlying options on interest-rate swaps. CoinDesk’s October 6 report also emphasizes an important point: volatility measures estimate the scale of possible movement, not its direction. A higher reading does not say whether yields will rise or fall.

What the October 6 divergence looked like

CoinDesk reported that MOVE had risen 46% in June and was hovering around 116 on October 6, 2026. The article compared that level with a cited March high of 115 and described 140—the high from early April during U.S.–China trade tensions—as the next resistance level. These are the article’s dated observations, not independently verified October 7 readings.

In the same October 6 report, CoinDesk said bitcoin’s 30-day implied-volatility measure, BVIV, and the S&P 500 VIX were near year-to-date lows. In other words, expected volatility in bonds was elevated relative to the calm implied by those two risk-asset measures. The indices cover different markets and should not be read as interchangeable gauges.

How to compare MOVE, VIX and BVIV

Measure Market Signal and horizon reported
MOVE U.S. bond-market yield volatility CoinDesk reported a reading around 116 on October 6, 2026; ICE describes an index based on a basket of OTC options on U.S. interest-rate swaps.
VIX S&P 500 equities CoinDesk said it was near its year-to-date low on October 6, 2026.
BVIV Bitcoin CoinDesk said the 30-day implied-volatility measure was near its year-to-date low on October 6, 2026.

These are measures of implied volatility, not forecasts of a particular price move. CoinDesk separately examined bitcoin daily returns against MOVE over 60- and 90-day windows and reported that they did not track closely. That return comparison is not the same as comparing two implied-volatility indices, and it weakens any claim that MOVE by itself reliably predicts a bitcoin move.

Why bond-market stress could matter beyond bonds

Treasury markets are central to financing and collateral, so a sharp change in bond-market conditions can be relevant to investors watching broader markets. One interpretation is that rising rate volatility could be an early sign of stress that may later become visible in stocks or other risk assets. It is a scenario to monitor, not a proven chain of cause and effect.

CoinDesk quoted wealth manager and RiskSIGNAL Report writer Kurt S. Altrichter: “The MOVE index is making higher lows while the VIX makes lower highs. The MOVE leads: it flashed turbulence before the VIX in 2022, in 2023, and at the start of the Iran war. Stocks are usually the last to get the message,” That is Altrichter’s interpretation of past episodes, not evidence that the current divergence must resolve the same way.

The report also quoted Cboe as saying investment-grade and high-yield corporate bond volatility had moved from the 6th and 11th percentiles, respectively, to the 79th and 84th percentiles over two weeks. CoinDesk attributed that statement to Cboe on X; the original post was not independently available for verification. The cited percentile jump adds another reported sign of credit-market volatility, but does not establish a coming move in bitcoin or equities.

What to watch—and what the signal cannot tell you

  • Whether MOVE clears the cited level: CoinDesk identified 140 as the early-April high and next resistance in its October 6 report. Treat that as a chart level from that report, not a verified current threshold.
  • Whether other markets confirm the shift: The divergence matters more if volatility measures in stocks, bitcoin or credit also rise. A single index cannot confirm a broad market repricing.
  • Direction and timing: MOVE indicates expected yield movement, not whether yields or asset prices will go up or down, or when another market might react.
  • Evidence of a relationship: CoinDesk’s 60- and 90-day analysis found bitcoin daily returns did not track MOVE closely. The reported observations therefore do not establish that elevated MOVE reliably predicts a later bitcoin or stock-volatility spike.

Market levels change quickly. The figures above describe CoinDesk’s October 6, 2026 report, not a live market update or a verified October 7 close.
