News reports say the Bombay High Court has granted Samantha Ruth Prabhu interim relief over alleged unauthorized online uses of her identity, including AI-generated deepfakes. The reported directions are not a final judgment, and the signed order was not available in the records reviewed for this article. Reports also disagree on the judge’s name, so that attribution remains unconfirmed.
What the reports say the court ordered
Hindustan Times reported on October 2, 2026, that the Bombay High Court directed platforms to remove objectionable content featuring Prabhu and that the interim relief would continue until further orders. The report says defendants were to file affidavits within six weeks. The Times of India and Telegraph India published accounts on October 1. Because the signed order was not retrieved, these details should be understood as reported proceedings, not a verified account of every operative direction.
According to the reports, Prabhu sought relief concerning social platforms, Google, Amazon listings, traders and pornographic websites. The reports describe the material at issue as including AI-generated deepfake videos, manipulated photographs, voice simulations, chatbot personas, fake pornography, merchandise and advertisements alleged to use her name, image, likeness or other identity traits without permission. These are allegations described in the coverage, not independently established findings about each item or defendant.
Hindustan Times reported that the court saw a “very strong prima facie” case for interim protection. It attributed this statement to the court: “The material on record clearly shows that the plaintiff’s personality rights, publicity rights, and moral rights are violated by creation of morphed, deepfake and superimposed contents comprising the morphed image, photographs and videos.” The statement reflects the court’s reported preliminary assessment; interim relief is not a final determination of liability.

Why the judge’s name is unresolved
The reports conflict on the presiding judge. Hindustan Times names Justice Milind Jadhav, while the Times of India and Telegraph India name Justice Madhav Jamdar. The Bombay High Court search page did not surface the order in the records reviewed. Until the signed order is checked, neither name should be treated as confirmed. The case number, full defendant list, URLs covered and exact directions also require confirmation against that order.
What the case may mean for platforms—and what it does not
The reported directions concern alleged uses of one person’s identity in a particular case. They should not be confused with a general ruling that settles every dispute about AI-generated content, parody, publicity rights or platform liability. The order is described as interim and continuing until further orders; the reports do not establish the final outcome of the suit.

The Times of India says the order connected personality and publicity rights with freedom of expression under Article 19(1)(a), privacy and dignity under Article 21, and performers’ moral rights under Section 38B of the Copyright Act. That is a report of the order’s reasoning, not a substitute for the signed text or a complete statement of Indian law.
How the reported case relates to India’s deepfake rules
Separately from this suit, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in a March 25, 2026, release that amendments to the Information Technology Rules were made on February 10, 2026, to address harmful synthetically generated information, including deepfakes and AI-generated content. The ministry describes the amendments as involving reasonable technical measures to prevent unlawful synthetic content, labels and traceable metadata for permissible synthetic content, and user-awareness and due-diligence obligations.

The same release says unlawful content must be removed within three hours after a competent court order or a reasoned intimation from the appropriate government or its agency. That is the ministry’s description of the rules; it does not by itself resolve how a requirement applies to every item or question in Prabhu’s case. The case-specific directions should be read from the signed order once available.

The ministry also says it issued a Standard Operating Procedure on November 11, 2025, concerning non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), including intimate or morphed images shared without consent. It is intended to guide victims, intermediaries and law-enforcement agencies on prompt, consistent action. This is general response guidance, not a remedy reported as having been ordered specifically for Prabhu.
