The role restrictions are intentionally complementary. The blind player may be the only person able to press, turn, or manipulate a control, while the mute player may be the only person who can verify what that control is supposed to do. The deaf player can observe the bomb and provide spoken descriptions, but cannot receive an audible correction from the others. Every solution therefore requires a chain of observation, interpretation, and execution.

What does a typical puzzle conversation look like?

A player first reports an observable fact, another player matches that fact to the manual, and the blind player carries out the resulting instruction. The relay has to be precise: a color, symbol, sequence, or position that is misheard or described ambiguously can send the team to the wrong section of the manual.
A PC Gamer account published on September 20, 2026 described players settling into a relay in which the seeing player reported bomb details, the manual reader interpreted them, and the blind player performed the physical actions. That is an observed session strategy, not a guarantee that every puzzle or team will be solved optimally in that order.
Practical communication habits
- Use fixed terms for colors, shapes, buttons, wires, and positions instead of inventing synonyms during a timed attempt.
- Have the manual reader repeat the relevant instruction in a short, ordered sequence.
- Ask the player operating the bomb to confirm each step before moving to the next control.
- Separate descriptions from commands: first identify what is visible, then state what action should follow.
- When a player cannot hear or speak by design, agree on a nonverbal or visual way to acknowledge that an instruction was received.
How many players do you need?
The core format is three-player online co-op. Steam lists BOMBANANA! as Multiplayer, Co-op, and Online Co-op and describes a team of three monkeys. The roles are designed as a set, so a full three-person group is the intended experience rather than one player selecting several characters.
The available FAQ says players can join through a Server Browser or room codes without adding one another as Steam friends first. A practical setup is therefore:
- Launch BOMBANANA! through Steam.
- Use the game’s multiplayer flow to create or locate a room.
- Share the room code with the other two players, or have them find the session through the Server Browser.
- Assign the three roles before beginning the bomb sequence.
The reviewed material does not confirm local couch co-op, split-screen play, or cross-play between platforms. Do not assume that a group can substitute a local player, mix storefronts, or resume on another platform unless a later update explicitly documents that support.
Is BOMBANANA! online co-op?
Yes. Online co-op is the documented multiplayer mode, and the game’s design expects three people to coordinate remotely through role-limited communication. You do not need to add every teammate as a Steam friend before joining: the community FAQ identifies both the Server Browser and room codes as ways to connect. That is useful for a one-off group, a community event, or teammates who do not already share a friends list.

The Steam Community FAQ states: “2 of the 3 roles require a microphone; however, one role, the mute monkey, is not allowed to speak, so you don’t need a microphone to play this role.” In other words, a microphone is important for a normal three-person session, but the mute role is specifically designed not to require spoken communication from that player.
The microphone requirement follows the game’s information architecture. Voice chat is not merely a social layer: players must translate observations and instructions across role limits. A USB gaming headset with a microphone is the most direct accessory for the two roles that need voice communication, especially if the group is playing in a noisy room. The game’s documentation does not state that a particular headset model is required.
Can you play without speaking?
Yes, if you take the mute monkey role. That role can read the manual but is not allowed to provide the answer verbally, so the player must use whatever nonverbal communication the game permits. Playing a different role without a microphone would remove a key communication channel and may make the intended puzzle flow impractical.

What “without quick-time events” means
Steam lists the game as playable without quick-time events. That is relevant for players who find rapid button prompts difficult, but it does not remove the communication puzzle or the need to coordinate the three roles.

The keyboard-only and mouse-only entries give players alternatives to a controller. Full controller support and Steam Input API support provide an additional route for players using gamepads, including Xbox and PlayStation controllers. Steam Deck Verified indicates that the title has been assessed for that handheld platform, although the role-based communication challenge still applies there.
Does BOMBANANA! save progress?
Steam confirms an accessibility entry called Save Anytime. That establishes that the game advertises the ability to save at any time, but it does not answer every co-op question a group may have.

- whether the host owns the save;
- whether all three players retain identical progress;
- whether a different player can host the same run later;
- whether an online session can be resumed by the same team after everyone leaves; or

What to do if multiplayer or a puzzle session goes wrong
A teammate cannot find the room
Try the room code first, then the Server Browser. Because the community FAQ says a Steam-friend connection is not required, adding one another as friends should not be treated as the only remedy. Confirm that everyone is entering the same room code and has launched the same current game build.
The team keeps miscommunicating
Pause the relay and standardize vocabulary. Have the observing player describe one bomb element at a time, let the manual reader identify the matching instruction, and require the operator to repeat the next action before performing it. Switching roles between attempts can also reveal whether a problem is caused by unclear phrasing or by one player struggling with a particular information restriction.
A control method is uncomfortable
Check whether keyboard-only, mouse-only, or controller input is more suitable. Steam also lists stereo and surround sound options, so players who depend on a particular audio arrangement should verify the selected output mode before starting a timed attempt.
You need technical support
Steam directs players to its support flow and community discussions. The community FAQ directs bug reports to the Steam forums or the game’s Discord. Include the game version, platform, multiplayer arrangement, role assignments, and the steps that reproduced the problem so other players or support staff can distinguish a connection issue from an intended role restriction.
Who is BOMBANANA! best suited to?
BOMBANANA! fits groups that enjoy communication-heavy puzzle solving and are willing to accept incomplete information. It is a poor match for a player expecting a conventional solo bomb simulator, unrestricted voice chat, or a fully documented shared campaign save. The strongest sessions will be with three people who can establish clear callouts, tolerate failed attempts, and understand that each restriction is part of the puzzle rather than a temporary inconvenience.
