Boltgun Boom vs. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun: Which Retro Shooter Should You Play?

Play Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun now if you want a released retro shooter on PC or console. Wait for Boltgun Boom if you specifically want the new mobile game on iPhone, iPad or Android. The two games should not be treated as interchangeable editions: official material identifies the original as a released PC-and-console FPS and Boom as a newly announced 2026 mobile title. It does not yet establish a port, sequel, replacement or quality ranking between them.

Quick answer: choose by platform and timing

The clearest supported difference is where and when you can play. Focus Entertainment announced Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, with a release date of 23 May 2023. It is the practical choice for anyone who wants to start playing on a computer or console.

Boltgun Boom is an announced iOS and Android game with a 2026 release window. Warhammer Community describes a single-player campaign spanning multiple worlds, fast movement, brutal firefights, mobile-optimised controls and a premium experience without advertisements or energy systems. Those are announced features and positioning, not independently tested results.

Because Boom has not yet launched, there is no reliable basis for declaring one game faster, longer, harder, better-looking, more responsive or better value. The recommendation is therefore straightforward: use the original for immediate PC or console play; follow Boom if your priority is a purpose-built mobile entry.

What you get with Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun

A released retro FPS

The original is a complete, released first-person shooter built around a deliberately retro presentation. Focus Entertainment and developer Auroch Digital announced its launch on 23 May 2023. The premise puts a Space Marine against Chaos forces, with the Boltgun and Chainsword named among the weapons.

“Today, Focus Entertainment and Auroch Digital are thrilled to announce that their FPS Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, is out!” was the publisher’s launch statement on that date. The important practical consequence is not the wording of the announcement but its status: the game is available rather than waiting on a future mobile launch.

Broad PC and console coverage

The announced platform list covers current and previous-generation PlayStation and Xbox hardware, Nintendo Switch and PC. That makes the original the only option in this comparison for someone playing on a desktop, laptop, PlayStation, Xbox or Switch. A store page, edition and current stock should still be checked for the specific device you own, because listings and promotions can change.

Documented offline and Horde options on PlayStation

The PlayStation listing describes the game as one-player with offline play enabled and also notes a free Horde mode. This is useful evidence for a PlayStation buyer who wants solo play without a network connection and an additional wave-based mode. It is platform-specific evidence, not proof that every version has an identical menu, mode list or entitlement.

What has been announced for Boltgun Boom

A mobile-first release

Warhammer Community announces Boltgun Boom for iOS and Android in 2026. It is presented as a mobile game rather than as a newly named edition of the existing PC and console release. No exact day, launch price, supported device list or store page details are established in the announcement.

The mobile focus matters. The announced description specifically mentions mobile-optimised controls, suggesting that the interface is being planned for touch devices instead of simply assuming a conventional gamepad or keyboard-and-mouse setup. That description does not tell us whether touch aiming will feel precise, whether controllers will be supported, or how the interface behaves on different screen sizes.

Campaign and combat promises

The announcement describes a single-player campaign that travels across multiple worlds, along with fast movement and brutal firefights. These phrases communicate the intended identity of the game, but they are not a hands-on assessment of level design, enemy variety, campaign length, difficulty, frame rate or input latency. Until launch, those details should remain open rather than being inferred from the original.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Premium positioning without ads or energy systems

Warhammer Community describes Boom as a premium experience without advertisements or energy systems. That is a meaningful distinction for players who dislike interruptive adverts or timers that limit attempts. It does not establish the purchase price, whether there will be optional downloadable content, how updates will work or whether platform-specific billing rules apply.

Are these games ports, sequels or replacements?

Official material currently establishes only that they are two Warhammer 40,000 shooters with different platform plans. It does not define Boltgun Boom as a port of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, a sequel, a remake, an expansion or a replacement. Avoid assuming that a weapon list, story connection, level structure or progression system carries from one game to the other.

That distinction protects you from making the wrong purchase decision. A PC owner should not wait for Boom expecting a mobile version to arrive on desktop, because the announced platforms are iOS and Android. Conversely, a phone or tablet owner should not buy the original expecting it to appear in a mobile store, because its announced release platforms are PC and consoles.

Which one fits your situation?

Choose the original if you want to play today

  • You play on PC, PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch.
  • You want a released game rather than a 2026 announcement.
  • You want the established retro-FPS premise involving a Space Marine, Chaos forces, the Boltgun and Chainsword.
  • You are buying on PlayStation and value the listing’s documented one-player offline option.
  • You want to try the free Horde mode listed for PlayStation.

These points identify a practical fit; they do not claim that the original is mechanically superior. Its advantage is availability on the systems listed above and the fact that its release status is settled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wait for Boom if mobile is your priority

  • Your main device is an iPhone, iPad or Android phone or tablet.
  • You want a game designed around mobile-optimised controls.
  • You prefer a single-player campaign described as spanning multiple worlds.
  • You specifically want the announced premium model without advertisements or energy systems.
  • You are comfortable waiting for the 2026 release window and for final pricing and device requirements to be published.

Waiting is a platform decision, not a quality verdict. The announcement does not yet support claims about how Boom compares with the original in responsiveness, difficulty, graphics, performance or campaign length.

If you own both a console and a phone

There is no need to choose a winner based on the current evidence. The original gives you the released PC-and-console experience, while Boom is the announced mobile option. Treat them as separate products until the developer or publisher explains how their stories, systems and content relate.

Platform-by-platform buying guide

PC players

PC is an officially listed platform for the original, so it is the direct choice if you want to play with a keyboard and mouse or a compatible gamepad now. Boom is not announced for Windows, macOS or Linux. Do not assume that an eventual mobile release will be distributed through a PC storefront.

PlayStation players

Both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 are included in the original announcement. The PlayStation store listing is also the clearest platform-specific source for one-player offline play and the free Horde mode. Check the listing for the console generation you own, the edition being sold and any current offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox players

Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One are listed for the original. Boom’s announced mobile platforms do not include Xbox. The official comparison material does not establish cross-save, cross-buy or any relationship between Xbox progress and a future mobile account, so those features should not be expected.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Nintendo Switch players

Focus lists Nintendo Switch among the original platforms, and a Games Workshop licensed-products catalogue from May 2025 shows a Switch game box. That supports the existence of a Switch release, not guaranteed stock at every retailer. Confirm whether you are buying a physical or digital edition and check its current availability in your region.

iPhone, iPad and Android players

Boom is the only title in this comparison announced for iOS and Android. The announcement does not yet give minimum operating-system versions, supported chipsets, storage requirements, tablet coverage or a final device list. If your phone or tablet is older, wait for those specifications rather than assuming every device running the operating system will qualify.

Controls: what is known and what is not

The only firm controls information in the Boom announcement is that its controls are being optimised for mobile. That tells you the intended input context, not the result. It does not confirm virtual-stick placement, touch aiming, remapping, haptic feedback, controller support, accessibility options or compatibility with a particular handset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original’s platform list implies that control schemes vary by device, but the cited launch material does not provide a detailed control specification. On PC, console and Switch, the exact feel can depend on your input device, display and settings. A comparison claiming that one title has better aim or movement would require testing that has not been documented here.

Modes, connectivity and session planning

Original Boltgun

For PlayStation, the store listing specifies one-player play, offline play and a free Horde mode. That combination suits a solo player who wants both the main experience and an additional mode without depending on an online session. Verify the listing for your own platform before assuming that the same mode naming, download arrangement or included content applies everywhere.

Boltgun Boom

Boom is announced as a single-player campaign. No official mode list beyond that campaign is established in the material available here, and no online requirement is stated. Do not infer offline operation, multiplayer, Horde mode or cross-save support until those features are documented for the mobile release.

Price, editions and availability checks

The original’s price is not a durable figure. Store prices, bundles, editions and limited-time promotions vary by platform, region and date. A PlayStation listing displayed a price and time-limited offers when accessed, but those figures should not be treated as a standing recommendation. Check the current store page for your country and hardware immediately before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Boom’s launch price has not been announced in the available official material. “Premium” describes the announced monetisation approach—without advertisements or energy systems—but does not reveal the amount charged, whether the purchase is one-time, or whether optional content will be sold later.

For Nintendo Switch shoppers, Games Workshop’s May 2025 licensed-products catalogue shows a Switch game box, while Focus lists Switch among the original release platforms. That supports the existence of a Switch release, not current inventory at a particular retailer. Confirm the edition and availability before placing an order.

What “premium” does—and does not—tell you

In Boom’s announcement, “premium” is paired with the specific promise of no advertisements and no energy systems. That lets a prospective player rule out two common mobile conventions: forced commercial interruptions and a timer or energy meter that restricts play sessions. It does not automatically answer every payment question.

The announcement does not say whether Boom will use a one-time purchase, whether optional cosmetic or story content will follow, or whether prices will differ between iOS and Android. It also does not state whether a purchase on one mobile platform transfers to the other. Treat the no-ads and no-energy wording as confirmed positioning, while leaving the rest for the final store listings.

Questions worth checking when Boom launches

  • Device support: Does your exact iOS or Android version meet the minimum requirement, and is your chipset listed?
  • Storage: How much free space is needed for the initial download and later updates?
  • Input: Are Bluetooth controllers supported, and can touch controls be remapped?
  • Connectivity: Can the campaign be played offline after installation, or is an online check required?
  • Accessibility: Are there adjustable subtitles, aim options, color settings or other accessibility controls?
  • Performance: What frame-rate targets and graphics options are available on your phone or tablet?
  • Purchase terms: Is the premium purchase one-time, and are any additional paid items listed?
  • Content: Does the final release include modes beyond the announced single-player campaign?

These checks matter because a platform announcement identifies the intended audience but not the technical experience on every supported device. They are also more useful than trying to predict Boom’s quality from its title or from the original game’s feature list.

How to decide without over-reading the announcements

  1. Identify your device. If it is PC, PlayStation, Xbox or Switch, the released original is the supported choice. If it is iOS or Android, Boom is the announced match.
  2. Set your time horizon. Choose the original for immediate play. Choose Boom only if waiting for its 2026 window is acceptable.
  3. Separate confirmed features from promises. Treat the original’s release and PlayStation listing as established facts. Treat Boom’s mobile controls, multi-world campaign, fast movement, brutal firefights and premium model as announced intentions until launch.
  4. Check the exact store listing. Confirm region, hardware generation, edition, price, included modes and any current promotion on the storefront you will use.
  5. Reassess when Boom receives a date and device list. At that point, compare supported operating-system versions, storage, controller support, offline behavior, accessibility and monetisation details rather than relying on the reveal description alone.

What remains unknown about Boom

A fair comparison has to leave several important questions unanswered:

  • The exact release day within 2026.
  • The launch price and whether regional prices differ.
  • Minimum iOS and Android versions, supported chipsets, storage requirements and tablet compatibility.
  • Whether the campaign can be played fully offline.
  • Whether gamepad support, remapping, aim assistance and accessibility settings are included.
  • Campaign length, mission structure, checkpointing and difficulty options.
  • Frame-rate targets, graphics settings, battery impact and thermal behavior on different devices.
  • Whether Boom shares characters, weapons, locations or progression with the original.
  • Whether it includes modes beyond the announced single-player campaign.

None of these gaps makes the announcement meaningless; they define what cannot responsibly be compared before release. A future store page or developer update may answer them, but the current announcement does not.

Bottom line for different readers

For a PC or console player

Buy or play Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun if its released retro-FPS premise appeals to you. It is the only title here officially available on those platforms, and PlayStation documentation adds one-player offline play plus a free Horde mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a mobile-only player

Watch Boltgun Boom. It is the title announced for iOS and Android, with mobile-optimised controls and a premium, no-ads, no-energy-systems design described by Warhammer Community. Wait for the final date, price and device requirements before deciding.

For someone comparing quality

There is no evidence-based winner yet. The original can be judged as a released game, while Boom can currently be judged only by its announced platform and design goals. Any stronger claim about quality, controls, performance or value would go beyond the information officially established.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play Boltgun Boom now?

No. Warhammer Community has announced it for iOS and Android in 2026, but no exact launch day is established. The released option today is Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun on PC and consoles.

Is Boltgun Boom a mobile port of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun?

Official material does not define Boom as a port, sequel, remake, expansion or replacement. It is safest to treat it as a separate announced mobile game until the publisher or developer explains the relationship.

Which platforms support the original Boltgun?

Focus Entertainment lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. Check the current storefront for your region and the exact edition available.

Does the original support offline play?

The PlayStation listing specifies one-player offline play and a free Horde mode. That evidence is platform-specific, so verify the listing for another platform rather than assuming every version has identical features.

Will Boltgun Boom be free?

Its announcement calls it a premium experience without advertisements or energy systems, but it does not state a launch price or confirm whether optional paid content will be offered.

Does Boom include Horde mode or multiplayer?

That has not been announced. The confirmed description is a single-player campaign across multiple worlds. Do not infer Horde, multiplayer, cross-save or other modes until official details list them.

Should a PC player wait for Boom?

No platform announcement supports a PC version of Boom. If you want to play on PC, the released original is the supported choice; Boom is currently announced for iOS and Android.

What should Switch buyers verify?

Confirm the current digital or physical edition, regional availability, price and included content. A May 2025 Games Workshop catalogue shows a Switch box, while Focus lists Switch as an original platform, but retailer stock and promotions can change.

The Bottom Line

Choose Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun for a released PC or console retro FPS, including the PlayStation listing’s one-player offline play and free Horde mode. Choose Boltgun Boom only if mobile is your priority and you are willing to wait for its 2026 iOS and Android launch, final price and device requirements.
