Boltgun 2 vs Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun: Which Boomer Shooter Has Better Secrets?

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 has the better secret design for most players. Its branching campaign, alternate routes, optional chapters and non-mandatory platforming make discovery part of the campaign structure rather than a search confined to individual rooms. The original Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is the better choice if you want a cleaner, more traditional boomer-shooter hunt through fixed levels packed with side paths and hidden collectibles.

That is a judgment about variety and replay structure, not a claim that Boltgun 2 contains a verified larger number of secrets. No authoritative, complete total for either game has been established. A 2026 iTechGuides guide counts 17 Secrets and 3 Purity Seals in the Boltgun 2 mission branch “There Is Only War,” but that is one branch-specific figure, not a whole-game total.

Quick answer: which game has better secrets?

Question Boltgun 2 Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun
Overall secret design More varied and structurally ambitious More focused and classically readable
Where secrets live Branch choices, alternate routes, optional chapters, platforming areas, switches and exploration spaces Side rooms, unusual corridors and alternate paths inside authored levels
How replay works Replay can be necessary because a run cannot show every branch Replay is mainly for finding missed collectibles in levels you already know
Reward evidence Reviews describe collectibles, power-ups, ammunition and utility rewards Available evidence establishes collectible-driven replay, but not a directly comparable reward table
Best fit Players who enjoy route discovery and campaign variation Players who want a compact, traditional secret sweep

Choose Boltgun 2 when “better” means more kinds of discovery and stronger reasons to begin another campaign. Choose Boltgun when the pleasure is methodically checking every suspicious wall, side corridor and combat arena in a tightly authored retro-FPS level.

How Boltgun 2 changes the meaning of a secret

Branching campaign paths

The official Steam listing describes Boltgun 2 as a “Branching Campaign” in which you choose your path and each branch features unique levels. That changes the first question you ask when hunting secrets. In the original game, the usual question is, “What corner of this level have I missed?” In the sequel, it can also be, “Which level did I never enter because I chose another branch?”

A hidden area inside a level is still a conventional secret, but a branch-specific level is a larger form of missable content. You may complete a run, find every obvious collectible in the stages you visited and still have unseen secrets because another route presented different stages.

Alternating chapters and optional chapters

Windows Central’s Alex Cope describes “alternating chapters you can only select once per playthrough.” Cope also reports that these choices can “sometimes unlock secret optional chapters where you can find more hidden collectibles.” The important distinction is that replay is not merely a cleanup exercise. A second run can expose a different slice of the campaign and therefore a different set of places to search.

This structure gives Boltgun 2 a wider secret vocabulary:

  • A route choice can determine which authored levels are available.
  • An alternating chapter can be selected in one run but not revisited in that same playthrough.
  • A choice can open an optional chapter rather than only a hidden room.
  • Collectibles may be tied to an optional chapter that another route never exposes.

Optional platforming as a hiding place

Finger Guns describes non-mandatory platforming sections that serve as hiding places for secrets and collectibles. These spaces matter because they ask for a different skill from the usual boomer-shooter search. Instead of simply checking a side door after a firefight, you may need to notice a ledge, commit to a jump or investigate a movement route that the critical path does not require.

Optional platforming also creates a useful separation between “I explored the room” and “I explored the movement space.” A player who scans walls and doors but never tests the surrounding vertical geometry can leave a level believing it is complete when a platforming detour was the intended hiding place.

Winding layouts and different completion orders

A GamesRadar preview quotes Auroch developers describing levels as “huge,” “claustrophobic and winding or mazelike,” with some sections completable “in different orders.” That is preview evidence rather than a complete map of the released game, but it explains why Boltgun 2 can support more layered exploration. A large, winding level can hide a switch behind one route, place a reward beyond another and still let the player return to a central area from multiple directions.

Different completion orders make memory less reliable as a guide. In a linear level, you can often remember that the secret was behind the arena you just cleared. In a maze-like level with several valid orders, you need to track landmarks, locked transitions and unexplored branches instead of relying only on the sequence of combat encounters.

How the original Boltgun handles secrets

Fixed levels, familiar boomer-shooter logic

The original Boltgun concentrates its secret hunt inside authored levels. Windows Central presents the secret collectibles in every level as a source of replay value. That design is easier to understand: enter a stage, learn its combat spaces, then revisit it to inspect side rooms, dead ends, odd corners and paths that were easy to ignore during the first run.

Its limitation is also its strength. The level itself does not change shape because you selected a different campaign branch. Once you know the stage, your next attempt is primarily about execution and completion: locate what you missed, collect it and move on. For players who associate boomer shooters with methodical wall-checking after a battle, this is a coherent and satisfying loop.

Classic discovery habits

Boltgun’s secret design rewards habits that have defined the genre for decades:

  • Search the edges of every combat arena after the enemies are gone.
  • Check corridors that appear to lead away from the objective.
  • Look for rooms that seem too small or oddly placed to be necessary.
  • Revisit areas after acquiring a new route or understanding the level’s layout.
  • Treat unusual geometry and dead ends as possible invitations rather than wasted space.

The available evidence supports collectible-driven replay, but it does not provide a complete total of the original game’s secrets or a verified reward-by-reward comparison with Boltgun 2. It is therefore not accurate to declare that the first game has fewer secrets simply because its system is less structurally complex.

Secret design compared by the questions players actually ask

Which game offers more kinds of secrets?

Boltgun 2 wins on variety. Its secret possibilities include branch-specific levels, optional chapters, hidden collectibles, alternate routes, switches and platforming detours. Some discoveries are spatial, while others depend on a campaign decision made before you reach the relevant area.

Boltgun offers a narrower category: hidden content embedded in fixed levels. That narrower range is not a defect if you want a consistent search pattern. It becomes a disadvantage only when you want secrets to alter the shape of the campaign.

Does Boltgun 2 have more secrets?

There is no authoritative complete count for either game, so a numerical winner cannot be established. The published figure of 17 Secrets and 3 Purity Seals applies to “There Is Only War,” one Boltgun 2 mission branch, according to an iTechGuides guide published in 2026. It should not be added to other branches and presented as the sequel’s total.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

No directly comparable published statistic for the original Boltgun’s complete secret count is established either. The defensible comparison is about structure: Boltgun 2 distributes discovery across more systems, while Boltgun places its collectibles inside its levels.

Which game makes replay more meaningful?

Boltgun 2 has the stronger structural case. If a chapter choice is limited to one selection per playthrough, seeing every branch requires another run. A replay can therefore reveal unique levels, optional chapters and collectibles that were impossible to reach in the first run.

Boltgun’s replay value is more completionist than structural. You replay a familiar level because you missed a collectible or want a clean sweep, not because the campaign has selected a different set of stages. Players who prefer a predictable checklist may find that more satisfying than a branching campaign.

Which game makes a missed secret easier to understand?

Boltgun is easier to diagnose. If a level’s collectible count is incomplete, the likely solution is to search the stage again and inspect its alternate spaces. Boltgun 2 can be harder to interpret because the missing content may belong to a branch, an optional chapter or a movement route you never considered part of the level.

The trade-off is important: Boltgun 2 creates more surprising discoveries, but Boltgun gives you a clearer relationship between the level you played and the secrets still missing from it.

Which game has better secret rewards?

Available reviews describe Boltgun 2 secrets as providing collectibles, power-ups and ammunition or utility rewards. That makes exploration potentially useful during the campaign, not only valuable for a completion percentage.

The available evidence for Boltgun establishes collectible-driven replay but does not provide a directly comparable reward table. Do not assume that every original-game secret has an equivalent power-up, ammunition or utility function based on the sequel’s descriptions.

What a Boltgun 2 secret-hunting run demands

Track the branch before tracking the room

At the start of a Boltgun 2 run, record the chapter or route decision you made. If you later find a guide entry for a level you never saw, that is not necessarily a missed doorway. It may belong to another branch. This simple distinction prevents wasted time repeatedly searching a stage for content that is unavailable in your current route.

Search the critical path and the movement space separately

First identify the route needed to progress. Then deliberately inspect the spaces that progress does not require: ledges, isolated platforms, return paths, climbable or jumpable geometry and dead ends. Finger Guns’ description of optional platforming makes this separation especially relevant to the sequel.

Revisit after understanding the level’s order

When a level is winding or mazelike, the first run may be spent building a mental map. On a later pass, use that map to test alternate orders rather than simply following the route that happened to work the first time. Look for doors, switches and junctions that become meaningful only when approached from another direction.

Plan a second run instead of treating every omission as a mistake

Because alternating chapters can be selected once per playthrough, a complete collection plan should include more than one campaign path. A missing collectible may be evidence of a branch choice, not poor observation. Treat the campaign as a set of route-specific checklists.

What a Boltgun secret-hunting run demands

Clear combat spaces before searching

The original’s fixed-level layout makes a systematic sweep practical. Finish the encounter, then inspect the arena while enemy pressure is gone. Check the perimeter before moving through the obvious exit.

Use a room-by-room route

Choose a consistent direction around each level and keep note of every branch you have taken. A fixed route reduces the chance of repeatedly checking the same familiar corridor while overlooking a short side passage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Return to suspicious dead ends

A corridor that appears to terminate without a reward deserves a second look. Compare its geometry with nearby spaces, inspect corners and verify whether an alternate entrance or switch changes what is accessible. The original game’s appeal is precisely this classic expectation that an apparently unnecessary space may conceal a collectible.

Separate level completion from collectible completion

Reaching the exit proves that you completed the level, not that you found every secret. Keep those goals separate when judging a run. Windows Central’s description of collectibles as replay value reflects this distinction: the reason to return is often completion, not a changed campaign route.

Which game should you choose?

Choose Boltgun 2 if you want campaign variety

  • You enjoy making route decisions and seeing how they alter the available stages.
  • You want optional chapters to feel like discoveries rather than simple locked rooms.
  • You are comfortable replaying a campaign to access alternate branches.
  • You like platforming and vertical exploration mixed into a retro-FPS search.
  • You want secrets that can include practical rewards such as power-ups, ammunition or utility items.

Choose Boltgun if you want a concentrated secret sweep

  • You prefer a straightforward level-by-level structure.
  • You enjoy inspecting side corridors and rooms without planning around campaign branches.
  • You want replay to focus on finding missed collectibles in familiar spaces.
  • You prefer classic boomer-shooter exploration over optional platforming detours.
  • You value a more predictable relationship between a level and its secret checklist.

Choose based on your tolerance for uncertainty

Boltgun 2 asks you to accept that a first run may be incomplete for structural reasons. You may not have access to every chapter, and a guide entry can describe a location that your route never generated. Boltgun asks you to accept a different kind of uncertainty: the level is available, but the hidden collectible may be tucked into a space you did not inspect.

Do you need to play Boltgun before Boltgun 2?

The available evidence does not establish a mandatory first-game requirement. The documented secret systems for Boltgun 2—branch selection, unique levels, optional chapters and platforming areas—are described as parts of its own campaign. If your immediate concern is whether you can understand its secret hunt, nothing in the available descriptions says that prior completion of Boltgun is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Playing the original first may still appeal to players who want to experience the progression from a compact, fixed-level secret system to a branching one. That is a preference about context and style, not a confirmed access condition for the sequel’s secrets.

How to interpret guides and secret counts

Check whether a number is branch-specific

The “There Is Only War” figure of 17 Secrets and 3 Purity Seals is useful as a mission-branch reference. It is not a complete Boltgun 2 total. Before using any guide number as a game-wide comparison, verify whether it covers one mission, one branch, one chapter or all available routes.

Do not turn review language into a total

Words such as “huge,” “winding,” “many” or “more” describe experience or structure, not a verified collectible count. GamesRadar’s preview supports the idea of varied level layouts and different completion orders, but it does not provide a final released-game map or total.

Use missing content as a diagnostic clue

If a Boltgun 2 guide lists a chapter you never encountered, compare your campaign route before searching every completed level again. If a Boltgun collectible remains missing, begin with the level’s side rooms and alternate paths because the original’s documented replay loop is contained within its authored stages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision

Boltgun 2 is the stronger answer to “which boomer shooter has better secrets?” when the standard is variety, route discovery and replay that exposes genuinely different campaign content. Its branch choices, optional chapters and platforming spaces make secrets part of the game’s structure.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun remains the more disciplined secret-hunt experience. Its collectibles sit inside fixed levels, so the search is easier to frame, easier to repeat and more faithful to the classic inspect-every-corner boomer-shooter tradition. The better game depends on whether you want secrets to reshape a campaign or to reward a thorough sweep through a level you already know.
